Economic Activity Of A Grain Mill Located In Bald Eagle Valley, Pennsylvania 1868 To 1872, James Joseph Tucker

Accounting Historians Journal

In 1831, a grain mill was constructed along Bald Eagle Creek in Unionville, Pennsylvania. The author examines accounting records of this mill from 1868 to 1872 while under the proprietorship of William D. Smith. The economic activities and accounting procedures revealed in this study provide insight into the economic events as perceived and recorded by this proprietorship in immediate post-Civil War times.

Accountant-Historians Of The Incas, John A. Yeakel Jan 1983

Accountant-Historians Of The Incas, John A. Yeakel

Accounting Historians Journal

The quipu was the ingenious, knotted-string device utilized throughout the Incan empire for recording data within the decimal system. Although quipu experts have often been thought of as managerial or governmental accountants, the writings of the early chroniclers of Peru reveal that quipu specialists were more than accountants. Quipucamayocs were also the historians of the Incas.

Aquaculture--Now, Factory Fish Farming, Michael W. Fox Jan 1983

Aquaculture--Now, Factory Fish Farming, Michael W. Fox

Aquaculture Collection

"Aquaculture 1983" was the title of a 5-day symposium and industry exhibit held in Washington, D.C., on january 9- 13,1983, sponsored by World Mariculture Society, Catfish Farmers of America, Fish Culture Section of the American Fisheries Society, U.S. Trout Farmers Association, Shellfish Institute of North America, and National Shellfisheries Association. While ecologists, economists, futurologists, and others have touted the virtues and potentials of intensive fish and shellfish farm- · ing, this growing industry in the U.S. may become blighted by the same problems that have come to afflict agribusiness' "factory farming" of crops, livestock, and poultry.

The Behavior Of Confined Calves Raised For Veal: Are These Animals Distressed?, M. Kiley-Worthington

Ethology Collection

The behavior of 12 calves confined in crates was recorded at 1-minute intervals for 12-hour periods. These recordings were made at fortnightly intervals from approximately 2 to 16 weeks of age. In all, 864 hours of observations were recorded.

The activities that were performed and the amount of time spent doing each are outlined. Circadian rhythms were controlled largely by feeding time, although there was a difference between diurnal and nocturnal behavior. Individual calves vaned tn how they adapted to the restricted environment. Individual personality profiles and data on the ontogeny of behavior under these conditions are presented.

Ethologic And Economic Examination Of Aviary Housing For Commercial Laying Flocks, D. W. Fölsch, Chr. Dolf, H. Ehrbar, T. Bleuler, H. Teijgeler

Agribusiness Collection

The result of our work shows that appropriate housing is necessary for intensively kept hens and that the housing has to correspond to the vital needs and the nature of the animals.

This is important for two reasons: a) the innate needs of the birds must be satisfied; b) for the proper development of the animal and successful egg production.

The housing facilities should allow the following functional cycles without restrictions:

Social organization: the structuring of a group or unit of animals.

Locomotion: walking, running, fluttering, flying.

Feeding behavior: search for food and water, food and water pecking, ground scratching, …

The Canadian Harp Seal Hunt: A Moral Assessment, L. W. Sumner

Hunting Collection

The population of the harp seal, Pagophilus groenlandicus, is divided into three distinct breeding groups, which are centered on the White Sea, the Greenland Sea, and the northwest Atlantic. The last of these three populations, by far the largest, summers in the Arctic waters of Canada and west Greenland. In the autumn the animals in this group begin to migrate southward ahead of the advancing ice pack. By late February or early March, the females reach the breeding grounds off the coast of Newfoundland-Labrador (the Front) and near the Magdalen Islands (the Gulf). They then haul themselves out onto the …

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart Jan 1983

Quality Control Circles And The United States, Herbert M. Hart

Theses

The Quality Control Circle attempts to solve management and production problems using a participative management style. This study represents an analysis of how the Quality Control Circle emerged in Japan and efforts in the U. S. to Americanize the concept. It is important to note that participative management represents a single management style. This style is not recommended for every organization. Organizations must select the appropriate management style to accomplish conceived goals and the style must fit within their particular corporate culture. The Quality Control Circle is an outgrowth of participative management and is not-all inclusive of participative management ideals.

Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia - Background Information For Prospective Farmers, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture Aug 1982

Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia - Background Information For Prospective Farmers, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

The Ord Irrigation Project is located in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley in the far north of the State of Western Australia.

The potential for harnessing northern rivers was realised many years ago. In 1941, a small experimental farm was established on the Ord, and possible dam sites were investigated upstream.

In 1945, this small experimental farm was relocated and the Kimberley Research Station was established on Ivanhoe Plain, part of the 12,000 hectare area now irrigated from Lake Kununurra above the Diversion Dam.

By 1958, the Western Australian Government was convinced of the viability of an irrigation scheme on …

Evaluation Of Attendance Potential For Aero World, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

Plans existed for several years to develop a major themed amusement park in San Diego County, California, utilizing an aviation/aerospace format and incorporating a wide variety of active and passive entertainment elements. After a search of various alternative locations in the San Diego area, an option was secured on a 340-acre property near the intersection of Interstate Highways 5 and 805 in the northern portion of the City of San Diego. Aero World's developers retained Harrison Price Company to conduct an attendance analysis given the nature and scope of the project as conceived. A secondary objective was the determination of …

KWRRI Research Reports

The research reported is based on a holistic sociocultural study of a popular regional recreation site in Eastern Kentucky, the Red River Gorge. Our research with over 3200 recreational visitors to the Gorge, 395 members of four recreation/conservation groups, 44 local landowners, and with a large number of management personnel from various governmental agencies permits us to provide an especially comprehensive overview of the problems and prospects of this popular area. Our general purpose is to provide descriptive and analytic information that will allow managers to more effectively understand and cope with their work in Red River Gorge.

Is Your Pet Safe From Laboratory Experimentation? Mar 1982

Is Your Pet Safe From Laboratory Experimentation?

Close Up Reports

In the U.S., the path from public or private shelters to laboratories is treat too often by dogs and cats. In a few states, so-called "pound seizure" laws require shelters to turn over unclaimed or unwanted dogs and cats to researchers. In other states, shelters may voluntarily sell dogs and cats to "bunchers" who travel around a state or states, bunching animals together to resell to research facilities. Even in the handful of states that prohibit release of animals for research purposes, unscrupulous profit seekers can find animals and sell them for research across state lines.

Many scientists claim these …

Fisheries Research Reports

Four Korean fishing trawlers operated in Western Australian waters, largely on the Northwest shelf, during 1979 under State/Commonwealth feasibility fishing arrangements. Two of these vessels, Dong Bang 91 and Dong Won 509, were given permission by Government, late in 1979, to conduct demersal trawling operations in the Great Australian Bight between longitudes 116°£ to 138°E and outside of 12 miles from shore.

Two observers from the Western Australian Department of Fisheries and Wildlife were involved with monitoring the activities of these vessels at sea in the Bight.

This report describes the operations of these Korean vessels in detail and represents …

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner Jan 1982

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner

Agribusiness Collection

My family has been in the wholesale veal business for 30 years. The basis of this business has been various breeds of female beef calves that are slaughtered at less than 500 lb. These calves are allowed to suck from cows and graze until they are ready for market. Beef calves, however, tend to vary in quality and quantity depending on the tjme of the year that they are purchased and raised. Generally, calves become scarce in the spring, when feeders are buying calves to put out on pasture. Then, in the summer and fall, large numbers of calves usually …

The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster Jan 1982

The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster

Agribusiness Collection

The number of ways that one can be nice or nasty to animals are legion. This article will consider only one very specific aspect of farm animal welfare, namely, those systems of intensive animal production in which the system itself, irrespective of the quality of the stockmanship within the system, appears to restrict the normal behavior of farm animals to an unacceptable degree. The systems that were considered by the House of Commons Select Committee on Agriculure (1981) include egg production from hens in battery cages, production of veal from calves deprived of solid food and isolated in wooden crates, …
