Hsus Veal Campaign Takes Off Jan 1982

Hsus Veal Campaign Takes Off

Close Up Reports

Through our action packet, which includes a fact sheet describing how veal calves are raised in this country, an action sheet showing what you can do to help, and bright yellow cards to leave when you dine out explaining why you didn't choose veal, you can help get the word out.

It is clear that our efforts to reform milk-fed veal production methods in the U.S. are already producing results. Shortly after our New York Times ad appeared, a large farm group paid to have its own ad published in response. Agricultural trade papers have warned their readers against our …

Forward Contracts For Marketing Beef Cattle, D J. Barker Jan 1982

Forward Contracts For Marketing Beef Cattle, D J. Barker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Beef producers in Western Australia have established a scheme for marketing cattle of specified quality, at a price negotiated in advance with the buyer. This eliminates the financial risk for the producer in feeding beef cattle and ensures a supply of quality beef for the meat industry and the consumer. However the contracts can only be profitable if the producer 'does his homework' properly. This article outlines the items he should consider.

Proposed Statement Of Position : Accounting By Agricultural Producers And Agricultural Cooperatives;Accounting By Agricultural Producers And Agricultural Cooperatives; Exposure Draft (American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants), 1982, Sept. 10, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Accounting Standards Division

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

This proposed Statement presents accounting and reporting recommendations for the general-purpose financial statements of agricultural producers and agricultural cooperatives. The proposed statement recommends that growing crops of agricultural producers be reported at the lower of cost and market and that inventories of harvested crops and livestock held for sale also be reported at the lower of cost and market unless certain conditions are met. Permanent land development costs, such as clearing, initial leveling, terracing, and construction of earthen dams, would be capitalized but not depreciated. The proposed statement recommends that all direct and indirect costs of developing production animals be …

Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture Dec 1981

Ord River Irrigation Area Of Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

The Ord Irrigation Project is located in the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley in the far north of the State of Western Australia.

The potential for harnessing northern rivers was realised many years ago. In 1941, a small experimental farm was established on the Ord, and possible dam sites were investigated upstream.

In 1945, this small experimental farm was relocated and the Kimberley Research Station was established on Ivanhoe Plain, part of the 12,000 hectare area now irrigated from Lake Kununurra above the Diversion Dam.

By 1958, the Western Australian Government was convinced of the viability of an irrigation scheme on …

Origins Of Accounting And Writing, Douglas Garbutt

Accounting Historians Notebook

A definitive answer to Louis Goldberg's question Did accounting antedate writing? must depend on conclusive definitions of what is meant by both accounting and writing. It is doubtful whether universally acceptable definitions of either will ever be established. Thus, the question may be as unanswered as it is interesting!

A Forecasting-Programming Method For Swine Production-Marketing Decisions, Larry Janssen, James B. Hassler Oct 1981

A Forecasting-Programming Method For Swine Production-Marketing Decisions, Larry Janssen, James B. Hassler

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study reports on the development and progress of a forecasting-programming model for swine inventory management and marketing decisions. This model considers interrelationships between breeding herd, feeder pig and finishing hog activities. Objectives were: 1. To structure a dynamic operational decision model for a modern farrow-to-finish swine confinement unit which conforms with economic theory, uses price and cost forecast information and is as consistent as possible with current production scheduling practices. 2. To use and test this model during a combined production and marketing decision process and to compare economic results with results of a standard strategy.

Hsus Uncovers Cruel Puppy Mills Sep 1981

Hsus Uncovers Cruel Puppy Mills

Close Up Reports

It is estimated that puppy mills grind out more than half a million puppies every year to be sold almost exclusively in pet stores. But it is not only puppies--who, after all, escape the squalor and crowding after six or seven weeks that suffer. Of equal concern is the fate of the puppy mill breeding stock-living, breathing, feeling adult dogs-used to produce these "valuable" puppies. These dogs often are forced to spend their entire lives in cramped cages or pens, with not enough food or water and no shade from the scorching midwestern sun or shelter from the brutal winter …

Shade Management In Subtropical Environment For Milk Yield And Composition In Holstein And Jersey Cows, R. J. Collier, R. M. Eley, A. K. Sharma, R. M. Pereira, D. E. Buffington

Management and Monitoring of Farm Animals Collection

Forty-eight cows were assigned randomly to shade (15 Holsteins, 8 Jerseys) or no shade (16 Holsteins, 9 Jerseys) for 102 days beginning 12 June 1977 to examine effects of solar heat load on milk yield and composition. Rectal temperatures, respiration rates, and rumen contractions/min were monitored between 1200 and 1700 h on 20 randomly selected days. Morning and evening milk weights were recorded daily. Once weekly, morning and evening milk samples were collected from each cow and analyzed for fat, protein, acidity, freezing point depression, and somatic cell number. Black Globe temperature, rectal temperature, and respiration rate were elevated in …

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak

Agribusiness Collection

Farmers, just like other businessmen, attempt to produce a saleable product at the least possible cost to themselves. In this way they hope to assure themselves of some profit, and hence to earn a living. In itself this profit motive cannot be criticized, but in attempting to maintain their profits, farmers have adopted more intensive systems of animal production. In turn, the benefits from farmers using these new techniques have accrued to consumers in the form of relatively less expensive food. Clearly, by restricting the use of factory farming methods (which are associated with lower unit costs of production) there …

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox

Agribusiness Collection

The subject of farm animal welfare has evoked a wide range of responses from those involved in the livestock industry and those concerned about the humaneness of intensive husbandry farming practices. Books have been published on the subject as well as a large number of articles in professional and popular magazines. Three international symposia dealing with animal rights have been held in the last two years and a major European conference dealing with farm animal welfare and involving veterinarians, farmers, animal scientists and animal welfare groups was held in Amsterdam in 1979.

In the U.K., a governmental Farm Animal Welfare …
