An annotated bibliography of biographies was compiled for the career education program in grades 4-6. An attempt was made to locate four biographies for each of the fifteen job clusters designated by the U.S. Office of Education that would be representative of the spectrum of the world of work. A search was made of the Cedar Falls Public Library, Wauzeka Public Schools IMC, and interlibrary loan for biographies. Representative biographies were found for the job clusters of Agribusiness and Natural Resources, Environment, Communication and Media, Fine Arts and Humanities, Health, Public Services, and Recreation and Hospitality. Stereotype Behaviour In Sows And Gilts Housed In Stalls, Tethers, And Groups, Judith K. Blackshaw, J. F. Mcveigh Jan 1984

Stereotype Behaviour In Sows And Gilts Housed In Stalls, Tethers, And Groups, Judith K. Blackshaw, J. F. Mcveigh

Agribusiness Collection

Observations of sows and gilts in tethers, stalls, and groups showed two distinct types of behaviour: pre-feed behaviour when pigs were anticipating food, and after-feed behaviour. Sows and gilts tethered for the first time do not show pre-feed excitement, but this develops in 42 days which suggests that pre-feed behaviour is not stereotype, as suggested by the literature, but is a conditioned reflex.

The question of the importance of after-feeding behaviours which are often called stereotypies is examined. The total time occupied by these behaviours over 24 hours by tethered sows is 14.5 to 29.0%, by tethered gilts 1.4 to …

Evils Of Modern Stables, James Irvine Lupton Jan 1984

Evils Of Modern Stables, James Irvine Lupton

Equines Collection

Portions of veterinarian James Irvine Lupton's book on horse management that deal with the problems of confinement husbandry practices have been selected as a significant historical record of humane concerns that were documented one hundred years ago. While the author's descriptive prose may lack scientific "objectivity," it does express a common sense morality and the subjective and intuitive observations and conclusions of an experienced veterinarian who clearly respects and understands the horse. His words bespeak of a bygone era where the care or husbandry of animals was both an art and a science, a discipline based upon empathy, compassion and …

Understanding Synergy: A Conceptual And Empirical Research Proposal, William R. Bigler, Jr. Jan 1984

Understanding Synergy: A Conceptual And Empirical Research Proposal, William R. Bigler, Jr.

Historical Working Papers

Benefits of mergers and acquisitions can be understood as the result of synergy if the concept of synergy can be defined both theoretically and practically. Synergy has value in financial, marketing, and managerial terms and seems to best be understood from discerning how subsystems within one organization benefit from integration or association with similar components from another organization.

Virginia—Major Force In World Trade, R. Clifton Poole Jan 1984

Virginia—Major Force In World Trade, R. Clifton Poole

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The importance of world trade has long been recognized in the Commonwealth of Virginia (VA). Indeed, one of the major reasons for establishing the original colony at Jamestown was to provide a base from which the New World "treasures" could be shipped to the mother country—England. As a result, since colonial days VA has been one of the world's major exporters of tobacco. Even today the volume of VA's tobacco exports is second only to her exports of bituminous coal.

This world trade orientation so deeply imprinted in the thinking of the early leaders of the infant colony still prevails …

The Red River Gorge: The Existence Of "Recreational Niches" And Their Management Implications, Sara E. Alexander, Billie R. Dewalt, Eugenie Scott

KWRRI Research Reports

Until the late 1960's, the Red River Gorge was just one of the more beautiful parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest. At this time, the Army Corps of Engineers proposed to dam the river for flood control, water supply, and recreation purposes. Intense opposition to the project generated considerable publicity and the Gorge area experienced substantial increases in visitation. The result has been not only severe environmental degradation but extensive overcrowding as well. These trends are presently overtaxing management capabilities of the United States Forest Service. The most pressing issue has come to be how to effectively manage this …

Integration Of Social Indicators Into Holistic Geobased Models, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 1983

Integration Of Social Indicators Into Holistic Geobased Models, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

The current need in social indicator modeling is a general framework for socio-environmental inquiry. This is consistent with John Dewey's advice on social measurement given more than forty years ago. This article will follow Marcus Felson's advice to develop socio-environmental accounts based on "map, clock, and calendar."' This can be accomplished by combining the social fabric matrix with temporal sequencing and geobased data systems.

Interim Report On Orlando Visitors Reactions To Universal Studios Tour Florida, Mccollum/Spielman Associates, Inc.

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

In 1980, prior to the completion of EPCOT, a major study was conducted to measure potential interest in visiting both, Universal Studios Tour in Orlando and EPCOT, and how these parks would impact existing attractions. The 1980 study was conducted over several months amongst 1,021 overnight visitors to Orlando, and utilized verbal descriptions and audio tapes to describe both the Universal concept and that of EPCOT. The results of the 1980 study indicated extremely high interest in both Universal and EPCOT, and strong opportunity for both attractions. However, EPCOT has since opened, creating a condition that obviously must be addressed …

As such, it should provide information for those interested in entering and hoping to manage in technical sales career.

While much of the information was derived from books, periodicals, and conversations with people associated with the electrical industry, the major portion of the work …

The Effect Of The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Robert Palmer Yankle Ii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Scrimshaw, as an art form, had just recently risen a few notches above the state of obscurity. There are still millions of Americans who probably know nothing about it. Inextricably linked with the whaling industry for years, the scrimshaw industry has recently undergone a remarkable transition. When whaling ended in the United States, scrimshaw moved ashore and some people found out that there was a great deal of money to be made in the scrimshaw business. but with the passage of the Marine Mammals Protection Act in 1973, scrimshanders found themselves being tightly regulated by the Federal government. This paper …
