Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

U.S. firms face a major global competitiveness challenge. Although the problems relate, in part, to differences in the economic structure, history and cultural differences between the U.S. and foreign rivals, these factors may not explain as much of the variance in competitiveness as they did in the past. Competitiveness problems are also linked to a number of strategic factors under the control of managers. Among them are the absorption of managerial energy in mergers and acquisitions, increasing levels of debt, increasing firm size, greater firm diversification, lack of investment in human capital and inappropriate corporate culture.

In response to these …

Are Acquisitions A Poison Pill For Innovation?, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, R. Duane Ireland, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

The recent wave of acquisition activity may be damaging the innovative capabilities of American firms, thus making them less competitive in the global marketplace. In fact, acquisitions often serve as a substitute for innovation, which may cause further neglect of internal research and development (R&D) programs. Additionally, acquisitions often lead to increases in leverage, diversification, and absorb significant amounts of executive time, which may lead to reduced managerial commitment to innovation.

In this article, evidence is presented suggesting that acquisition activity may result in reductions in R&D inputs and outputs. On average, the 191 firms in the sample reduced their …

End Time Ministries International Christian Museum: Religious Theme Park Marketing Study, Dick Pope Sr. Institute For Tourism Studies

Dick Pope Sr. Institute Publications

Overall, the majority of the survey respondents were interested in visiting a religious theme park or attraction. Approximately two-thirds of the sample expressed interest in visiting a religious theme park in Central Florida upon hearing a brief and general description of the concept. The proportion of respondents interested in visiting the park increased after respondents were told more about what the park would include, that no effort would be made to convert anyone from one religion to another, and that the park would not be involved with any television evangelist. Finally, after learning that the park would be a Christian …

U.S. Technology Transfer To China: Problems And Perspectives, Yalan Jiang

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The subject of technology transfer has been an area of wide-range interest and significance for many years, especially in the recent past, as Japan and the Newly Industrialized Nations (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) have set themselves as successful examples in area of technology transfer. Recognizing the importance of technology transfer to its national economic development, China started the unprecedented movement of technology transfer along with its economic reform in the late 1970s.

Great achievements have been made in the area of agriculture, industry, science and technology, and defense. However, many problems have emerged during the process of …

Toward The Feminization Of Collective Bargaining Law, Gillian L. Lester Jan 1991

Toward The Feminization Of Collective Bargaining Law, Gillian L. Lester

Faculty Scholarship

Canadian collective bargaining law is flawed because it fails to address the concerns of a substantial segment of the work force and overlooks women as a rich source of insight into the dynamics of the bargaining environment. The author begins by exploring the problems inherent in the classical contractualist model, arguing that current collective bargaining law reflects these weaknesses and echoes a morality and ideology which are stereotypically masculine. By analyzing the legal and practical structures of collective bargaining, the author illustrates the ways in which the "morality of the workplace" is manifested differently between men and women. The author …

Adjusting Property Values For Power Lines: An Exploratory Study, Robert T. Hirst

Bulletin No 4176 - Agroforestry With Widely Spaced Pine Trees, Richard Moore, Peter Jenkins, Geoff Anderson, Phil Scott

Bulletins 4000 -

Combining a softwood timber crop with other forms of agriculture on the same land can make better use of available space, soil and water, and lead to higher productivity from farms.

This Bulletin outlines the potential benefits of, and a programme for, the growing of pine on farmland in Western Australia in conjunction with either pasture or another crop. The agroforestry system described has been well researched in Westem Australia.

The main objectives of agroforestry are to produce high quality timber while maintaining adequate pasture for either grazing or fodder cropping until the timber is harvested.

Farm Management Memo - Advice To Help Farming Through The Rural Downturn, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

Historically, commodity prices cycle between a "boom and a bust" every few years. Farmers are often able to adjust their operations to reduce the impact of a downturn in commodity prices by:

  • Increasing efficiency through reducing or maintaining input costs while maintaining or increasing production levels.

  • Maximising returns through seeking price premiums on commodities (protein, noodle quality, finer wool, increased clean wool yield).

  • Reducing overhead costs

  • Seeking cheaper finance or refinancing costly loans

  • Careful planning and management with a high degree of attention to detail.

  • Seeking advice

Miscellaneous Publication 36/90 - Western Australian Beef Industry - Background, Alan Peggs

Animal production and livestock published reports

The Western Australian beef industry is poised to expand production in response to improved export opportunities in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

There are a number of beef processors and exporters with substantial experience in exporting beef to international markets. These companies can supply a wide range of beef products.

Most beef produced in Western Australia is grass-fed. However, grain-finished beef is produced at certain times of the year.

The beef industry has been in a period of contraction since the "beef price crash" of the mid 1970s. As a result it has come to focus more on domestic market …

MARTIN TROPP considers the message of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with reference to contemporary views of mind, body, and will. Tropp is Professor of English at Babson College. He is the author of scholarly articles on such writers as Nathaniel West, and two books, one on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein monster and the other on horror stories in modern culture, 1818- 1918.

Among the writers newly found in the more open society of Gorbachev's era, RICHARD L. CHAPPLE observes, the talent of Tatyana Tolstaya is notable for creating portraits of ordinary people of the middle class. They …

Contingency Contracting In The Low-Intensity Conflict Environment, Steve Bell Oct 1990

Contingency Contracting In The Low-Intensity Conflict Environment, Steve Bell

Faculty Publications

The United States military presence in Central and South America is under attack, both literally and politically, as bombings and sniper fire directed against U.S. military personnel characterize the low-intensity conflict (LIC) environment in certain parts of Latin America. The process of contracting support for U.S. forces in a LIC environment is oriented toward sustaining operations in the field, as opposed to contracting for mobilization or surge production. A significant characteristic of this field support is that a contracting officer (KO) deploys overseas with the supported military unit. Some of the unique concerns faced by a KO deploying with an …
