The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 1990

The Repertory Of Social Care Of The Elderly, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is an analysis of aspects of the emergence of a repertory of social care services for the elderly from the vantage point of the common theory of voluntary action. One facet of that theory, labeled here as endowment theory, is an emerging rational choice model of the praxeological implications of voluntary action within the pragmatic problem-solving tradition. Three terms – endowment, repertory and commons – are presented in the paper as terms whose conventional meanings contain previously undisclosed connotations relevant to a fuller understanding of voluntary action.

Fisheries Research Report No. 89 - Relationships Among Partial And Whole Lengths And Weights For Western Australian Pink Snapper Chrysophrys Auratus (Sparidae), M. J. Moran, C. Burton Jun 1990

Fisheries Research Report No. 89 - Relationships Among Partial And Whole Lengths And Weights For Western Australian Pink Snapper Chrysophrys Auratus (Sparidae), M. J. Moran, C. Burton

Fisheries Research Reports

Pink snapper, Chrysophrysauratus (Sparidae) is one of the major commercial and recreational fish in Western Australian inshore waters. This report presents a number of equations and conversion factors for management and scientific study of the species. Equations to calculate total lengths from partial lengths will facilitate enforcement of minimum legal lengths when snapper are landed in a "head-off" condition. For fisheries science purposes, there are equations to convert among total length, standard length and length to caudal fork; and to convert lengths and weights of processed fish to whole lengths and weights. Length-weight relationships are presented and compared with those …

Bulletin No 4187 - Choosing Commercial Beef Bulls, David Barker Jun 1990

Bulletin No 4187 - Choosing Commercial Beef Bulls, David Barker

Bulletins 4000 -

This bulletin provides a method of placing realistic differences in value on young bulls offered for sale.

The prices paid for young bulls are often based on superficial appearance alone, and this has important financial implications for the purchaser. Different characteristics have either large or small effects on the net value of progeny produced. They are dependent on such factors as: the variability of different characteristics in cattle; differences in reliability of the assessment; the extent to which the characteristic is passed on to the progeny; the effect of the characteristic on realized net value of the progeny; the effect …

The Role Of African Women In Informal Industry : A Case Study, Ayorkor Eulalie Deganus Jan 1990

The Role Of African Women In Informal Industry : A Case Study, Ayorkor Eulalie Deganus

Theses

The informal industrial sector has in recent years been recognized by development agencies as an important area of economic activity which is capable of creating employment opportunities. This sector is also growing faster than its formal counterpart.

In developing countries, women dominate the informal sector by virtue of their traditional and unique roles in food processing, pottery and* basketry, alcholic beverage brewing, handicrafts, clothweaving, cosmetic manufacturing and a host of manufacturing activities. However due to a general misconception about the actual economic roles of women in society, very little attempt is made by development planners and agencies to improve their …

Toward A Generic Taxonomy Of The Not-For-Profits, Not-For-Profit Managers, And Not-For-Profit Managerial Functions, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The not-for-profit sector encompasses a diverse range of organizations, from large entities like the American Red Cross to small neighborhood associations, collectively representing the third largest economic sector and employing as many civilians as the federal government and all 50 states combined. This sector, influenced by privatization trends under the Reagan administration, necessitates a deeper understanding of the roles and functions of its managers. Existing literature highlights the importance of systematic taxonomies for classifying the functions, structures, and characteristics of nonprofit organizations. These frameworks assist educators, policymakers, and practitioners in comprehensively analyzing the sector, from identifying operational profiles to refining …

Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard Jan 1990

Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard

Agribusiness

Milk production supply response at the regional level for the U.S. dairy sector is estimated through the use of dynamic dual models. Adjustment rates and elasticity measures are presented, and then the estimated parameter coefficients are used to stimulate shifts in production resulting from price changes. A drop in milk price designed to realign market conditions is projected to be borne largely by the Corn Belt and, to a lesser extent, the western states.

This classified balance of accounts, together with extensive supplementary notes accompanying it, may be said to represent the earliest manifestation of financial reporting.

The Agricultural Implications Of Europe 1992, Ross Kingwell Jan 1990

The Agricultural Implications Of Europe 1992, Ross Kingwell

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Most farmers know only too well that the policies of national and international governments affect the prices they receive for their produce. The Europe 1992 policy is a new policy with potential to benefit Australian agriculture. The Europe 1992 policy is a set of policy initiatives being adopted by member countries of the European Economic Community (EC). The 1992 policy aims to create a barrier-free internal market among EC members by the end of 1992. All impediments to trade within the EC are to be dismantled. The Europe 1992 policy is already causing change in many European markets and is …

Animal Welfare, Animal Rights And Agriculture, Bernard E. Rollin Jan 1990

Animal Welfare, Animal Rights And Agriculture, Bernard E. Rollin

Animal Welfare Collection

The past decade has witnessed a major revolution in social concern with animals. Philosophically, this revolution entails a significant revision in traditional ways of conceiving our mod obligations to other creatures. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the social and conceptual basis for what is widely termed “animal rights.” The agricultural community has mistakenly tended to dismiss this new thinking as tkinge and emotionally based. In actuality, it is a natural extension of earlier social thought. The case of new laws regulating biomedical research illustrates the rapidity of social change in this area, as do recent developments in European regulation …

Fisheries Research Report No 99 - An Investigation Of Weight Loss Of Marron (Cherax Tenuimanus) In Air During Live Transport To Market, Noel Morrissy, Peter Walker, Cliff Fellows, Warren Moore

Fisheries Research Reports

It is generally acknowledged that more competitive marketing of Australian fisheries and aquaculture harvests requires closer attention to post-harvest technology. Historically, these products have been marketed in a variety of forms (e.g., for freshwater crayfish:- boiled fresh, boiled frozen, whole or tails, and live). Some of these forms present a product of actual, or perceived, poorer quality to the retailer and consumer and, thereby, obtain low prices.

Freshwater crayfish can survive out of water for extended periods and, so, can be economically transported alive to the (overseas) restaurant chef. This live product commands the very highest price for the grower. …

Bulletin No 4172 - Using Gross Margins, Peter Eckersley Jan 1990

Bulletin No 4172 - Using Gross Margins, Peter Eckersley

Bulletins 4000 -

The gross margin of a farm activity is the difference Variable or direct costs are those which change according between the gross income earned and the variable costs to the size of the activity, for example, drenches, dips and incurred.

Gross margins are useful for comparing similar farm activities. They are best expressed in terms of that farm resource which is most limiting (for example, per hectare, per dollar invested or per labour unit). Gross margins can be used to compare the performance of current activities or to predict the performance of a potential alternative activity.

They should not be …

The Environmental Impact On Management Decisions, Daniel C. Ingham

Theses

This thesis will focus on how the environment will impact management decisions. The impact is measured in dollars when possible,

Management needs to have a working knowledge of how their decisions can impact the environment and ultimately the bottom line. The environmental impact ranges from depletion of the ozone to contamination of groundwater. The potential business changes due to the environment cover the range from the planning to the disposal stages of a product and to include shifts in marketing and advertising strategies.

The environment is getting more attention today from the public than at any other time. The public …
