A New Marlin, Makaira Panamensis, From The Late Miocene Of Panama, Harry L. Fierstine Jan 1978

A New Marlin, Makaira Panamensis, From The Late Miocene Of Panama, Harry L. Fierstine

Biological Sciences

Makaira panamensis new sp. is described from a single neurocranium found in the Chagres Sandstone (Late Miocene) of the Atlantic coast of Panama. The new species is closely related to and possibly ancestral to the extant M. indica (black marlin) and M. nigricans (blue marlin). It differs from both by possessing a triangular rather than elongate basioccipital foramen, large nutrient canals in the rostrum and probably a more elongate orbit. The fossil is compared to all known fossil Istiophorids as well as to the living marlins. It is suggested that the black marlin is a more recent derivative (than the …

A Revision Of Pectis Section Pectothrix (Compositae: Tageteae), David J. Keil Jan 1978

A Revision Of Pectis Section Pectothrix (Compositae: Tageteae), David J. Keil

Biological Sciences

Pectis L. sect. Pectothrix A. Gray (Compositae: Tageteae) comprises a group of showy, yellow-headed species which occurs mainly in the arid and semi-arid portions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Although several regional floras have included one or more of the species in this group, no workers since Fernald (1897) and Rydberg (1916) have attempted to treat this portion of genus in its entirety. Since 1916, several workers have described new taxa (Cory, 1927; Johnston, 1940; Wiggins, 1951; Keil, 1974), and many new collections have been made. Recent studies (Keil, 1974) have suggested that the species relationships proposed …

Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov Jan 1978

Evolution Of Eusocial Behavior: Offspring Choice Or Parental Parasitism?, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Assuming the subsocial route towards eusociality, I show that selection favors worker habits (under haplodiploidy) provided the mutant workers are able to bias the sex ratio towards sisters and/or selectively substitute their sons for brothers. If the original workers are not able to do this, selection does not favor the habit. However, under these conditions, selection is indifferent as to whether an individual rears offspring or sibs. This makes it easy for a mother to enlist her daughters services in rearing other offspring, since the daughter cannot evolve to stop the parental parasitism. These results deal with the origin of …

Effects Of Hyperbaric Hypoxia On Some Enzyme Systems In The Mammalian Liver, Dennis A. Baeyens, M. J. Meier Jan 1978

Effects Of Hyperbaric Hypoxia On Some Enzyme Systems In The Mammalian Liver, Dennis A. Baeyens, M. J. Meier

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The metabolic effects of hypobaric hypoxic stress on the mammalian liver were studied. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity of mouse liver homogenates were measured after exposure to an equivalent altitude of 36,000 feet and compared to controls kept at zero altitude. After six and twelve hour incubation periods, the altitude exposed samples demonstrated a significantly higher LDH activity than controls. SDH activity remained unchanged from controls after six hours but was significantly lower than controls after a 12 hour exposure to altitude. It is concluded that the changes in enzyme activity reflect a metabolic control mechanism …

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich Jan 1978

Primary Productivity In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, During And After Sediment-Control Dam Construction, Randall Francis Brich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Cochrane was selected for this study because of its history of superior water transparency (Haertel 1972, 1976b). Significant amounts of silt and chemicals enter the lake with runoff at 3 locations (Haertel unpublished data). Restriction or impediment of runoff at these locations should result in improved water transparency (Haertel 1976b, Siegel 1975). Therefore, East Dakota Conservancy Sub-District and the South Dakota Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Forestry decided to impede runoff waters by means of 3 sediment-control dams incorporated into the perimeter road system of the lake and financed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (Siegel 1975) …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The immediate objectives of the studies to be presented were (1) to establish the presence and characterize the morphology of the Ay/Ay homozygotes before and after implantation, (2) describe the relationship between embryo and uterus, (3) characterize prenatal and neonatal losses occurring to the Ay/a mouse, and (4) test the randomness of mating selection of the Ay/a mouse. To meet the objectives, data collected from the complete serial section of embryos in utero at 90 and 132 hours post coitum (hpc) from matings of yellow females (Ay/a) by yellow males (A …

Cell Surface Changes During Early Mouse Development, James Thomas Rector Jan 1978

Cell Surface Changes During Early Mouse Development, James Thomas Rector

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objectives of this thesis were to further characterize cell surface properties of preimplantation mouse embryos. A study was conducted to determine latent effects of varying pulses of CB on early postimplantation mouse embryos by comparing their abilities to hatch, to attach and to sustain growth and differentiation of ICM and trophoblast tissue. CB treatment was begun at the 8-cell stage. Objectives of the studies involving Con A were to determine (1 ) whether agglutinability with Con A changes during compaction of 8-cell embryos, (2) if changes in numbers of binding sites parallel changes in agglutinability during preimplantation development, (3) whether …

Observations On Attachment And Spreading Of Zonaless Tw32/Tw32 (Brachyury Locus) And Control Icr Preimplantation Mouse Embryos, Ker Hwa Tung Jan 1978

Observations On Attachment And Spreading Of Zonaless Tw32/Tw32 (Brachyury Locus) And Control Icr Preimplantation Mouse Embryos, Ker Hwa Tung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the first part of this thesis is to test, in vitro, the adhesiveness of different stages of denuded preimplantation ICR mouse embryos for the substratum. In the second part, experiments are conducted to determine if there are differences in the attachment and spreading potential between tw32 homozygotes and normal embryos. Studies by Spiegelman (1976), Calarco and Brown (1968), Granholm and Johnson (1978), and others indicate that t12, tw32 and other lethal t alleles of the Brachyury or T-complex may affect cell surface properties. Thus, the objectives of this thesis include the acquisition of …

The Origins Of Spring Migratory Staging By Sandhill Cranes And White-Fronted Geese, Roger S. Sharpe Jan 1978

The Origins Of Spring Migratory Staging By Sandhill Cranes And White-Fronted Geese, Roger S. Sharpe

Biology Faculty Publications

A most unusual avian migratory event takes place each .,pring in the Platte River basin of Nebraska between 98 and 102 degrees longitude (Fig. 1). In suitable habitats throughout this area large concentrations of Sandhill Cranes, Crus canadensis, and White-fronted Geese, Anser albifrons, develop and achieve peak populations in mid to late March. This phenomenon is traditional to the migratory habits of specific populations and occurs during the spring movement from wintering grounds in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico to breeding grounds far to the north in Canada and Alaska. In both species groups of individuals drift in from wintering …

A Study Of The Macrobenthic Community In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, David R. German Jan 1978

A Study Of The Macrobenthic Community In Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, David R. German

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As part of a continuing study of the biological community of Lake Cochrane, South Dakota, a quantitative survey of the macroscopic bottom fauna was made between the early part of April, 1976 and December, 1976. It was hoped that such a study could provide baseline data for an understanding of the interactions that occur between benthic organisms and other biological components of the lake system. The lake's primary productivity and phytoplankton and zooplankton standing crops have previously been studied by Haertel (1972, 1976) and Steinberg (1972). When this study was being conducted, sediment control dams were being built on three …

Assays Of The Metabolic Viability Of Single Giant Mitochondria. Experiments With Intact And Impaled Mitochondria, B. L. Maloff, S. P. Scordilis, H. Tedeschi Jan 1978

Assays Of The Metabolic Viability Of Single Giant Mitochondria. Experiments With Intact And Impaled Mitochondria, B. L. Maloff, S. P. Scordilis, H. Tedeschi

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Single giant mitochondria isolated from mice fed cuprizone were assayed for their metabolic viability. Two tests were devised. One test optically detected the accumulation of calcium phosphate within the mitochondria under massive loading conditions (including the presence of succinate and ATP). The accumulation corresponds to a test of energy coupling from either electron transport or the hydrolysis of ATP since it is blocked by either antimycin A or oligomycin. The other assay tested for the production of ATP from ADP and Pi, using myofibrils. Myofibrils prepared from glycerinated rabbit psoas muscle contract only in the presence of ATP and not …

A Correlation Study On The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, Lynn Walter Capraun Jan 1978

A Correlation Study On The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, Lynn Walter Capraun

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Data were extracted from medical records of 202 former patients of a well established central Florida general hospital. Records were selected so as to include an equal number of disease categories dispersed equally over the two years. One hundred records were dated 1973 and 102 were dated 1976. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and asthma had been diagnosed in 67, 67, and 68 of the cases respectively. The age, sex, race, smoking habits, and occupations of the patients were recorded and crosstabulated with the diagnostic tests and subsequent treatment ordered by the various physicians. Most of the emphysematous patients were males over …

Zooplankton Abundance And Diversity In Central Florida Grass Carp Ponds, Douglas Lee Fry Jan 1978

Zooplankton Abundance And Diversity In Central Florida Grass Carp Ponds, Douglas Lee Fry

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effect of the Asian grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) and aquatic vegetation upon the zooplankton in four adjacent experimental ponds (0.139 ha each) was studied for one year. Zooplankton were collected with a newly designed shallow-water sampler. Pond 1 contained no aquatic vegetation. Ponds 2, 3, and 4 contained nine species of rooted aquatic plants. Grass carp were stocked into Pond 2 (65 per ha) and Pond 3 (611 per ha). Physicochemical parameters were similar among the ponds. Eighty-eight zooplankton species were enumerated. The abundance of zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) was not significantly different among the ponds …

Arthropod Community Dynamics In Three Ruderal Old Fields With Possible Effects Of Solid Rocket Fuel Exhaust, Russell D. Caldwell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Arthropods were collected at three sites on the Canaveral Peninsula of the east central Florida coast, from May until November, 1975. These sites were old fields dominated by grasses and herbs and one of them (site 1) was located near Launch Complex 41, Kennedy Space Center. A modified drop-trap of 0.5 m2 was used to trap arthropods at approximately 14-day intervals. A vacuum collector removed the arthropods and loose material which was visually inspected for arthropods by the unaided eye and a 7X dissecting scope. A total of 12,296 arthropods was collected during the study. Insects were by far the …

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Nebulosa, Scott S. Nagatani Jan 1978

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Nebulosa, Scott S. Nagatani

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this research to study the effect of temperature on the life cycle of D. nebulosa. D. nebulosa is considered a stenothermal species from a warm environment and has been reported in Texas and Florida, the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, and as far south as Brazil. According to the hypothesis of Hunter (1964), the capacity of this species for adaptation to different temperatures would not be expected to be as great as that of a eurythermal species. Stenothermal species are relatively limited by the environmental temperature, and therefore, one would expect a marked decrease in …

Ultraviolet Light Reactivation Of Gamma Ray-Induced Lethal Damage In Vertebrate Cells, Stewart W. Cross, H. Gaston Griggs Jan 1978

Ultraviolet Light Reactivation Of Gamma Ray-Induced Lethal Damage In Vertebrate Cells, Stewart W. Cross, H. Gaston Griggs

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A comparison was made of the extent of UVR of gamma ray induced lethal damage (mitigation of gamma ray-induced lethal effects by appropriate administration of low UV doses) in fish, amphibian, reptile and mammalian tissue culture cell lines. A significant level of UVR was detected in the non-mammalian lines, but the mammalian cells appeared to have lost this ability. Associated mitotic index data is interpreted as supporting the notion that low UV doses, appropriately administered, may aid repair processes in some cells (indirectly) by hindering the antagonistic metabolic processes which convert gamma ray induced lesions to a non-reversible state.

The Reproductive Cycle Of Microtus Ochrogaster In Eastern Kansas, Robert K. Rose, Michael S. Gaines Jan 1978

The Reproductive Cycle Of Microtus Ochrogaster In Eastern Kansas, Robert K. Rose, Michael S. Gaines

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

About 800 Microtus ochrogaster were live—trapped at biweekly intervals from May 1971 through March 1973 in 3 grassland study areas in eastern Kansas, USA. Details of reproduction were determined by autopsy. Population density increased through the first winter, reached a peak in April 1972, then declined sharply during that summer and beyond. Body length, but not body mass, tended to be positively related to density. Both sexes matured at about the same weight; development was somewhat prolonged during the winter months, especially in the winter preceding the population peak. Pregnancy rates were high, approaching maximal iteroparity, throughout the study, with …

Lactose Variability Of Escherichia Coli In Thermally Stressed Reactor Effluent Waters, K. L. Kasweck, C. B. Fliermans Jan 1978

Lactose Variability Of Escherichia Coli In Thermally Stressed Reactor Effluent Waters, K. L. Kasweck, C. B. Fliermans

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Lactose-utilizing and nalidixic acid-resistant populations of Escherichia coli, having an optimum growth temperature of 370C, were placed in modified diffusion chambers. The chambers were submerged in the epilimnion and hypolimnion of a 1,100-hectare lake (Par Pond) which receives cooling water from a nuclear production reactor. Control chambers were placed in a deep-water reservoir and a Flowing-Streams Laboratory, both of which had comparable temperatures to Par Pond. The populations of E. coli were sampled regularly for up to 3 weeks. Viability of the bacteria was determined by dilution plating to nutrient agar followed by replicate plating onto selective medium to determine …

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson Jan 1978

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insects continue to be one of the major problems of man. It is, however, becoming more and more difficult to find substances that are effective in controlling insects and that are environmentally safe. It has become apparent that to control or eliminate harmful insects, alternate methods of control must be developed to replace or reduce the use of insecticides. One possible alternate method of control is to use insects against themselves in a process called the sterile male technique. This technique generally uses gamma radiation to induce sterility in males. When they are released into the native population and mate …

The Effects Of Predation And Sediment Reworking By The Maldanid Polychaete Axiothella Rubrocincta (Johnson) On Benthic Littoral Microalgae Assemblages, Gary Scott Shusta

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxonomic composition of the diatom assemblages inhabiting the substrate on the mudflat, and the effects of a cohabiting deposit-feeding invertebrate on the diatom assemblage structure are the subjects of this paper. While pelagic diatoms have received considerable attention in the literature to date, comparatively little is known about the ecology and distribution of benthic diatoms are known to be cosmopolitan in their distributions (Alee, 1950). These plants have been found to be opportunistic species in that they are quick to respond to relatively small perturbations in physical conditions. It has also been demonstrated that distinct associations of diatoms exist …
