Some Aspects Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Cercariae Of Schistosoma Mansoni Sambon, 1907, A. Eugene Dunham Jr. Jun 1968

Some Aspects Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Cercariae Of Schistosoma Mansoni Sambon, 1907, A. Eugene Dunham Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cercariac of Schistosoma mansoni were studied for glycogen utilization, uptake of glucose from solution, lactic acid production, and respiration.

Using the anthrone method of determination of carbohydrate, the amount of glycogen used by a single cercaria in 4 hours is determined as 43.2 x 10-4 μg ± 6.6 x 10-4 μg.

Glucose was not observed to have been used from solution under the conditions of the experiment, even in the presence of trehalose. The determinations were made by the Glucostat method.

After deproteinization and desugarization, aliquots of supernatant from cercarial suspensions were analyzed for lactic acid using p-phenylphenol …

Concurrent Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And Trypanosoma Equiperdum In Mice, Venus Ee-Siriporn Jun 1968

Concurrent Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And Trypanosoma Equiperdum In Mice, Venus Ee-Siriporn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to determine factors which may influence the survival time of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum and the effects of T. equiperdum on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

In order to maintain experimentally obtained standard hours of survival (88 hrs) in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 150,000 T. equiperdum, it was found that trypanosomes removed from the donor rat should be kept at 25 C and all counts, dilutions of the organisms, and injection should be completed within 1 hour after removal from the donor host. Survival time of mice is increased as the …

The Effect Of Cesium-123 On Cesium-137 Uptake By Tissues In The Laboratory Rat, Richard Riley Tokarz May 1968

The Effect Of Cesium-123 On Cesium-137 Uptake By Tissues In The Laboratory Rat, Richard Riley Tokarz

Biology ETDs

The effects of stable cesium-133 on cesium-137 metabolism were studied to better define mechanisms of cesium transport and binding by rat tissues. The extent to which the hypothetical cesium transport system can be overloaded was examined by giving cesium-133 and cesium-137 intraperitoneal injections within short time intervals. Whole animal and isolated tissue counts were made with a small animal whole body counter. Stable cesium-133 (0.02 g per animal) injected from 3 minutes to 24 hours prior to cesium-137 (0.15 ml containing 0.24 µCi per 100 g body weight) had little effect on the uptake of cesium-137 by tissues. Expressing data …

Normal Development Of The Aortic Isthmus, Elizabeth Short May 1968

Normal Development Of The Aortic Isthmus, Elizabeth Short

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The development of the aortic isthmus, that region of the arch of the aorta between the left subclavian artery and the attachment of the ligamentum arteriosum, has received little attention. While the developmental history of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale has been well documented, as have the cardiac malformations associated with failure to complete this developmental sequence, little work has been done to define the normal sequence of isthmus development in its transition to an adult configuration in the postnatal period. It has long been recognized that the cardiac malformation known as infantile or preductal coarctation of the aorta …

Studies Of Diet As A Factor In 137-Cesium Metabolism In Rats, Morris Burton Snipes May 1968

Studies Of Diet As A Factor In 137-Cesium Metabolism In Rats, Morris Burton Snipes

Biology ETDs

Effects of diet on 137Cs retention and distribution in the rat were examined. After a 7-day period, retention of an intraperitoneal dose of 137Cs was higher than control values for rats fed semistarvation, high carbohydrate, high protein, and high fat diets. Relative distribution of 137Cs among tissues .was examined considering changes in tissue composition due to diet variation. The primary effect of diet on cesium metabolism was a modification of cesium excretion via urine and feces. There appeared to be a direct relationship between mass of fecal material and the amount of 137Cs excreted in feces. …

The Specific Suppression Of The Primary Immune Response By Passive Administration Of Mouse Antibody Fractions, Catherine Spain Safford May 1968

The Specific Suppression Of The Primary Immune Response By Passive Administration Of Mouse Antibody Fractions, Catherine Spain Safford

Biology ETDs

The primary immune response can be specifically suppressed by the passive administration of the homologous antibody close to the time of the primary antigenic stimulus. Although the mechanism of this antibody-mediated suppression of the immune response has not yet been elucidated, it is known that both ϒM ( (19S) and ϒG (7S) antibodies can function as inhibitors, ϒG antibodies being approximately 100 to 200 times more effective than ϒM antibodies. In mice and in several other animals the ϒG antibody has been further separated into two subclasses, designated 7Sϒ1 and 7Sϒ2 globulins. These two classes are distinguished by …

Studies In Locomotion And Anatomy Of Scombroid Fishes, Harry L. Fierstine, Vladimir Walters Jan 1968

Studies In Locomotion And Anatomy Of Scombroid Fishes, Harry L. Fierstine, Vladimir Walters

Biological Sciences

Acceleration rates, analyses of body movements, and pertinent anatomical features are given for various members of the Scombridae, Istiophoridae, and Xiphiidae and are discussed in light of the modern work on smaller freshwater teleosts and marine cetaceans.

Acceleration values up to 43.1 m/sec2 are given for Thunnus albacares and Acanthocybium solanderi. Nearly 100% of the propulsive thrust comes from the caudal fin. There are two main intervertebral joints which are concerned with locomotion, a pre-peduncular and a post-peduncular joint with the body and peduncle held almost stiff, a condition similar to that described for marine cetaceans. The caudal …

Biological Aspects Of Heat Pollution, Theodore Olson Jan 1968

Biological Aspects Of Heat Pollution, Theodore Olson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The importance of temperature as an environmental factor has long been recognized by the ecologist, and its special impact upon the aquatic ecosystem has been of interest to aquatic biologists since they first began to observe interactions between living things and the physical environment. Interest in water temperatures as an environmental factor has recently become more widespread; and one aspect of the phenomenon, namely "thermal pollution," has attracted special attention.

Some Aspects Of The Symbionts Of Cassiopeia Frondosa, Dolores Ahles O.S.F. Jan 1968

Some Aspects Of The Symbionts Of Cassiopeia Frondosa, Dolores Ahles O.S.F.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Symbiodinium microadriaticum were found localized in the mesoglea of Cassiopeia, the upside-down jellyfish. Axenic cultures of the symbiont were produced, utilizing chemically defined media. Studies of the life cycle established the presence of isogametes which had previously been postulated. Reactions to various bands of the spectrum were noted, and tolerance tests for survival in darkness and under temperature stress were carried out. Nutritional experiments established nitrates as the best nitrogen source and verified the fact that vitamins B12 and Thiamine, though not essential far life, hove a stimulating effect on the growth and motility of these zooxanthellae.

Characteristics Of Four Marl Lakes As Related To Biological Productivity, J. E. Maloney, John Dobie, John B. Moyle Jan 1968

Characteristics Of Four Marl Lakes As Related To Biological Productivity, J. E. Maloney, John Dobie, John B. Moyle

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Physical and chemical characteristics of four dimictic eutrophic lakes of northcentral Minnesota with marl deposits are discussed in relation to production of invertebrate animals (benthos and plankton) that are the basic food of fish . Two of the lakes have a history as "productive" fish lakes and the other two as "problem" fish lakes. The "productive" lakes, as a type, have a larger surface area, a longer shallow-water littoral shelf, and a lower proportion of marly soils in the littoral zone than do the "problem" lakes. The standing crop of invertebrates was about twice as great per habitat unit in …

Renin Granularity In The Mouse Kidney, R. Williams Soller Jan 1968

Renin Granularity In The Mouse Kidney, R. Williams Soller

Senior Scholar Papers

Briefly. the rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone triangle can be thou ht of as a regulator of renal perfusion. Renin, released by the kidney in response to any threat in its perfusion n, acts on its substrate to produce angiotensin I, a mild vasoconstrictor which by means of plasma converting enzymes secretes angiotensint II. This latter product not only stimulates aldosterone output by the adrenals, but also supports the animals’ blood pressure. With aldosterone binding at the distal tubules in the kidney and this causing increased sodium retention, restoration of renal perfusion occurs – a phenomenon which shuts off the original signal for rennin …

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster Jan 1968

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Oxygen consumption can most readily be related to wet weight. However, the weight of a tadpole increases so long as it is feeding, then decreases during final non-feeding stages. Oxygen uptake may also be related to dry weight, but dry weight increases significantly from early tadpole stages to adult (Funkhouser and Mills, in press). There is change in one factor at the same time the change in the the other factor is in the opposite direction. Total nitrogen content may be used as an index of the metabolizing tissue, but is subject to the same criticism as dry weight (Moore, …

An Ecological Study Of Notoplana Acticola, A Polyclad Flatworm, In A Rocky Intertidal Habitat On The North Central California Coast, Alan Bradley Thum

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxonomy of the polyclad flatworms is fairly well-known and some attention has been given to study of their physiology. Investigations of an ecological nature, however, are scarce; in fact, no ecological studies have been made on the Pacific Coast of North America. Else- where, Pearse and Wharton (1938) investigated the general ecology of Stylochus frontalis, associated with oysters on the coasts of Florida, and occasional notes have appeared, reporting on polyclads as predators on oysters and barnacles (Book, 1925: Wolke, 1954; Loosanoff, 1956: Skerman,1960)

Seasonal Gonadal Changes Of Adult Oviparous Oysters In Tomales Bay, Carl John Berg Jan 1968

Seasonal Gonadal Changes Of Adult Oviparous Oysters In Tomales Bay, Carl John Berg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two species of oviparous oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1790), the Eastern oyster, and Crassostrea gigas (Thunbert, 1793), the Japanese oyster, were introduced into Tomales Bay, California, for commercial purposes. Because these oysters do not propagate in Tomales Bay, new shipments of adult oysters or oyster spat must be periodically sent from the east coast of the United States or from Japan. It is the purpose of this study to compare the seasonal gonadal changes which occur in the two species of adult oysters in Tomales Bay with one another, and to compare them with the seasonal gonadal changes which occur …

Effects Of Hypothermia And Saline Injection Of Cesium-137 And Sodium-22 Metabolism In White Rats, Glenn Michael Dempsey Sep 1967

Effects Of Hypothermia And Saline Injection Of Cesium-137 And Sodium-22 Metabolism In White Rats, Glenn Michael Dempsey

Biology ETDs

The excretion rates and distribution of cesium-137 and sodium-22 were studied in white rats exposed to cold or over-hydration, or both.

A single intraperitoneal injection of cesium-137 or sodium-22 was administered to rats housed in metabolic cages. Rate of isotope excretion was determined by daily measurements of urine, feces, and the whole animal with a gamma scintillation spectrometer.

In one study rats were injected intraperitoneally with saline solution equivalent to 10% of the body weight one hour after having been injected with cesium-137. After 23 hours the rats were sacrificed and individual tissue counts were taken to be compared with …

A Comparative Study Of The Sulfhydryl Groups In The Gastrocnemius Of The Normal And X-Irradiated Pet Mouse, Robert Edward Shervette Aug 1967

A Comparative Study Of The Sulfhydryl Groups In The Gastrocnemius Of The Normal And X-Irradiated Pet Mouse, Robert Edward Shervette

Master's Theses

It has been recognized that hyperpigmentation of the skin is the result of eliminating the. -SH inhibition when treatment is by x-irraidiation. The results of a. study by fieams and Schaeffer indicate : a progressive increase of melanocytes in the skin with an increasing dosage of x-irradiation. However, it was also noted that the effect of x-irradiatin on the gastrocnemius of the PET mouse resulted in a decrease in the number of intramuscular melanocytes. The present study was designed to determine whether the changes in the x-irradiated muscle is related to possible changes in -SH concentration. The technique employed is a …

The Ultrastructure Of The Vibratory Muscle Of Crotalus Horridus, Louis Pastore Aug 1967

The Ultrastructure Of The Vibratory Muscle Of Crotalus Horridus, Louis Pastore

Master's Theses

A comparison of the vibratory and epaxial muscles of Crotalus horridus horridus Linnaeus wa smade. muscle fibers, fibrils, filaments, mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum were described in this study. The sarcomeres of the epaxial muscle were almost three times the length of those of the vibratory muscle. The A band was observed to be about twice the length of the I band in the vibratory muscle. As seen in cross section the vibratory muscle had fibrils arranged in discrete packets with a limited number of thick myofilaments. In contrast, the fibrils of epaxial muscle were less conspicuously separated from each other …

A Study Of Hybridization And Behavioral Characters In Percina Notogramma (Rany And Hubbs) And Percina Peltata (Stauffer), Family Percidae, Jules J. Loos

Master's Theses

In view of the close phylogenetic relationship between the two sympatric species of darters, Percina notogramma (Raney and Hubbs) and Percina peltata (Stauffer), placed in the subgenus Alvordius by Bailey and Gosline (1955), it is of interest to compare them in more detail than has been done in the past. Percina notograrnma occurs only in the Chesapeake Drainage in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia whereas P. peltata ranges from Virginia to New York. Adequate comparisons of their external. morphological characters have been presented by Raney and Hubbs (1948) in their original description of P. notogramma. Supplementary data were provided by …

Electrical Response Of Frog Skin Epidermis To Sodium Ions, James H. Martin Jul 1967

Electrical Response Of Frog Skin Epidermis To Sodium Ions, James H. Martin

Master's Theses

Presently, the theory is held that the total frog skin potential (P.D.) is generated within the epidermis at two borders, the "outer border" and the "inner border, " which are said to be specifically permeable to Na+ and K+, respectively. This thesis concerns itself only with the electrical response of the "outer border" to varying Na+ concentrations in the solutions at the epidermis, [Na+]o. Contrary to expectation from the Nernst equation, the P.D. changes by only 17 to 35 mV, instead of theoretically 58 mV upon a 10 fold change in [Na …

Respiratory Activity Of Vibratory, Tail Epaxial And Midbody Expaxial Muscle In Crotalus Horridus, Aqkistrodon Contortrix, And Thamophis Sirtalis., James E. Forbes Jul 1967

Respiratory Activity Of Vibratory, Tail Epaxial And Midbody Expaxial Muscle In Crotalus Horridus, Aqkistrodon Contortrix, And Thamophis Sirtalis., James E. Forbes

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if the muscles associated with tail vibration in snakes are physiologically specialized for vibration. Timber rattle snakes (Crotalus horridus) , copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) and garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) were used. The copperhead represented a species which vibrates its tail but has no vibratory apparatus comparable to that of the rattlesnake. The garter snake does not vibrate its tail. A comparison of respiratory activities was made between the vibratory and tail epaxial muscle and the mid body epaxial muscle within and between the three species. Oxygen consumption of teased muscle fibers and muscle …

The Effects Of A Nerve Growth-Promoting Protein On The Integument Of Pet Mice, Craig Bauman Satterlee Jun 1967

The Effects Of A Nerve Growth-Promoting Protein On The Integument Of Pet Mice, Craig Bauman Satterlee

Master's Theses

A factor which specifically stimulates the growth of sensory and sympathetic nerve cells has been under investigation for a number of years. This factor, originally isolated in 1951, from mouse sarcomas 37 and 180, was named the "nerve growth factor". Its action was first shown in vivo by inoculating the sarcoma into chick embryos and subsequently in vitro by culturing chick ganglia and mouse sarcoma together. In the years immediately following the initial discovery, much more potent sources of NGF were found in the salivary glands and salivary secretions of a variety of species. These include rattle snake venom, and …

The Nitrogen Nutrition Of Emmonsia (Moniliales, Aleurismaceae), Gary L. Bradley Jun 1967

The Nitrogen Nutrition Of Emmonsia (Moniliales, Aleurismaceae), Gary L. Bradley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The questions posed in this research concerned both the comparison of the nitrogen nutrition between Emmonsia parva and Emmonsia crescens and the comparative nitrogen utilization within the species. This fungus is a parasite with a rather uncomplicated life-cycle. Thus it lends itself well to study of the host-parasite relationship at the molecular level. This research contributes toward that long-range goal.

Five replicate floating cultures of each species were grown in 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing a chemically defined basal medium plus one of the 29 nitrogen sources tested. Utilization of a particular source was determined by dry weight. The results …
