The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle May 1941

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle

Bachelors’ Theses

Very little, if any, work has been done on the thorax musculature in · the larvae stage of insects. The work that has been done has been confined mostly to the muscles of the abdominal region. From this work it has been found that extraordinary differences in muscle pattern occur often between larvae and adult stages of the same species. Since the muscles of all insects are more or less comparatively the same, what is true of one .will be generally true of another. There may be slight variations found between the abdominal segments and head segments but these differences …

The Effect Of Irradiation Upon The Fecundity Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Arnt M. Erickson May 1941

The Effect Of Irradiation Upon The Fecundity Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Arnt M. Erickson

Bachelors’ Theses

Many animals and plants are being subjected to irradiation of various types with the object of discovering the effect upon the development of the organism. This type of experimentation is still in its initial stages. The considerations which led to the choice of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, for the investigation were briefly the following: (a) its small size which insures that all parts of the ~ animal will receive approximately equal exposures to the radiations; (b} the fact that it passes through a pupal stage during which it may be conveniently manipulated in such irradiation work; (c) the …

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin May 1941

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin

Bachelors’ Theses

Although there has been extensive research carried on with growth variations of rats, there has been comparatively little done on this subject with respect to mice. Stefan Kopec (1938) carried out an experiment in which 24, 000 daily weights were taken of 3 female and 49 male black - and - white - spotted, white, and lilac mice, all sexually mature. He found that males showed non-cyclic weight increase with irregular fluctuations, while the females showed marked cycles of weight change. These
cycles appeared at the time when sexual maturity was attained; decreased in intensity with age, and ended with …

Artificial Parthenogenesis In Rana Pipiens, Richard V. Frohner

Biology Honors Papers

This 9 page thesis attempts to prove that development of a frog's egg may be initiated by a mechanical force alone, that this development is materially aided by a chemical agent, and to suggest the possible significance of each step to aid further investigation.

A Histological Comparison Of The Small Intestine Of The Frog And Man, Eli Getch May 1940

A Histological Comparison Of The Small Intestine Of The Frog And Man, Eli Getch

Bachelors’ Theses

Without the aid of a microscope, Bichat in 1800 studied tissues of various parts of the body, and, even though he did not make any cellular sketches, his work laid the foundation for histology. Then after the announcement of the cell theory by Schleiden and Schwann in 1839, a new path opened for histological study. Leydig (1864) applied the histology of that day to the lower animals. Cajal (1906) cleared up the complicated relations of the tissues together with a complete investigation of the nervous system.

A Cytological Study Of The Intestinal Glandular Epithelium, Mary Judelle Zuiker May 1940

A Cytological Study Of The Intestinal Glandular Epithelium, Mary Judelle Zuiker

Bachelors’ Theses

Continuing from the stomach, the digestive tract becomes a smaller tube whose internal surface is much increased by means of folds--the plica circularis, the villi, and crypts of Lieberkühn. The plica (formerly known as valvulae conniventes) are really elevations of the submucosa covered on both sides by the entire mucous membrane-villi, glands, and muscularis mucosae. The mucosa membrane, or tunica mucosa, is lined by simple columnar epithelium in which many goblet cells are present, particularly in the deeper folds. The basement membrane, as well as the muscularis mucosa, are identical with those of the stomach.

Resistance To Staphylococcus Aureus In White Rats, Robina B. Langill May 1940

Resistance To Staphylococcus Aureus In White Rats, Robina B. Langill

Bachelors’ Theses

An investigation of bibliographies shows that staphylococcus aureus in its pathogenic potentialities has been extensively investigated from varied points of view and with frequently conflicting results.

Staphylococcus aureus is most frequently associated with furuncles, wound infection, and minor skin abcesses. Occasionally, however, due to extreme lowered resistance or other conditions not fully understood, staphylococcus causes a septicaemia which is attended by an 80% mortality rate. Post-mortem examinations of the victims of such septicaemia show an extensive invasion of all organs of the body by the bacteria but more particularly a hyperplasia of the lymph nodes, the spleen and thymus, indicating …

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison May 1940

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parasitic protozoa of the intestinal tract of man were first observed by Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Dutch microscopist. In the year 1681, while observing his own excrement, Leeuwenhoek discovered and described certain forms of life which he called "animalcules" and which were verified later by workers in protozoology as Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite of the intestinal tract. During the period preceding the later part of the 19th century many observations of the parasitic intestinal protozoa of men and lower animals were made and many species were classified. It wasn't, however, until the year 1875 that a protozoan …

The Morphology And Histology Of The Virginia Oyster, Ostrea Virginica, Lister, Lewis Charles Goldstein Apr 1940

The Morphology And Histology Of The Virginia Oyster, Ostrea Virginica, Lister, Lewis Charles Goldstein

Master's Theses

The oyster has been known and used commercially since before the Roman and Greek civilizations, and reports of investigations pertaining to it can be found dating back almost to that period. Because of the commercial value of the oyster, most of the study of' the animal has dealt with its economic importance. Definite information concern ing the morphology and microscopic . structure of this Mollusc, therefore, is scarce. To be sure, there is an abundance of miscellaneous literature, but no systematic microscopic study has been reported. T. C . Nelson (1938) states, "A critical survey of the abundant and scattered …

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

During the past 7 years the Great Plains Region, with its "dust bowl", has been the scene of unparalleled activity in the fields of range management and erosion control. The people of this short grass area are extremely conscious of the need for a sound, practical program of conservation that will revegetate the wasted pasture and cultivated land, which will aid materially in preserving the eroding soil. Many problems have arisen as the program of conserving the soil and the vegetation has progressed.

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter Jul 1939

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This particular study has been restricted to certain mammals in western Kansas, including some on which there is little information, and others which observers would be most likely to notice in everyday life. For several years the writer has been vitally interested in the animal life in Kansas. Therefore, when the need for a study of western Kansas mammals was presented to him in the summer of 1936, the problem of this study was selected. It is hoped that this report will suggest to ecologists, historians, and others, further studies, including reasons for the changes here-in shown. What have been …

Plants And Animals Used As Sources Of Dye, Paint, And Skin Dressing In The Southwest, Mary Dennis

Biology ETDs

The area comprising the Southwest is somewhat disputed by different authors, but some idea of its extent and general features as well as some conception of the ethnology in relation to the tribes within the area is needed for an understanding of the scope of this investigation.

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke Jun 1939

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke

Biology ETDs

The identification of animals or parts of animals without the aid of external characteristics is confusing problem in many fields of zoology. This is especially true in some studies as life histories and the food habits of predators. A problem of this type is even more confusing in New Mexico because relatively little work has been completed on the taxonomy and the distribution of the native fauna.

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt Jun 1939

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt

Bachelors’ Theses

All living organisms whether they be the smallest single cells or the largest mammals demand nourishment for their multifarious physiological processes. Popular and pseudoscientific thinkers and writers speak of nutrition in terms of food consumed, while true scientific investigators consider nutrition in relation to the actual assimilation of the components of food called proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille Jun 1939

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille

Bachelors’ Theses

The tongue is generally represented in all vertebrates although it varies widely in the extent to which it is developed. Among the fish it occurs in its most primitive condition. It is called a primary tongue and is merely a fleashy fold of dense connective tissue developed from the floor of the mouth between the hyoid and mandibular arches, the hyoid frequently extending into it and supporting it. It is incapable of motion except as moved by the supporting skeleton for it lacks intrinsic muscles. It is sensory, having both tactile and gustatory functions. It is often papillose, and in …

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik May 1939

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the invention of the microscope, the study of the blood and its constituents has been a major interests of histologists and hematologists. The vast amount of material written about the subject could not have been accomplished without the development and use of staining techniques which made possible a more precise observation of the nature of the blood. At the present time there are many procedures and stains which vary greatly in their application and use. It is the purpose of this thesis to review these many methods and catalogue them according to their application in the blood techniques.
