Participation Of The Renin-Angiotensin System In The Control Of Vascular Capacity During Hemorrhagic Hypotension, James Robert Powell
Participation Of The Renin-Angiotensin System In The Control Of Vascular Capacity During Hemorrhagic Hypotension, James Robert Powell
Masters Theses
Introduction
Review of the Literature
Severe hypotension has long been held as being one of the most potent stimuli for activation·of the mechanisms responsible for circulatory homeostasis. It has been accepted that the most immediate response to hypotension involves activation of the autonomic nervous system causing an increased vascular tone. In addition to various neurogenic mechanisms that function to cause an increase in vascular tone, several humeral mechanisms have also been implicated.
Rocha e Silva and Rosenberg (1969) described the release of vasopressin (ADH) from the posterior lobe of the pituitary in response to hemorrhage in the dog. They postulated …

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Citellus Townsendii Townsendii (Bachman) In Central Washington, Mark Roy Fuller
An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Citellus Townsendii Townsendii (Bachman) In Central Washington, Mark Roy Fuller
All Master's Theses
This study of the behavior of Citellus townsendii townsendii was based on field observations of animals at their northern most distribution. The squirrels' seasonal activity and behavioral repertoire, when considered with environmental parameters, suggest important adaptations for survival. The animals were in torpor from about July to February. Activity generally occurred during the midmorning hours, allowing them to avoid temperature extremes. Quantitative analysis of behavioral observations indicated that most activities occurred in a non-random order.

Intestinal Absorption And Lipolysis Of Safflower Oil And Other Unsaturated Vegetable Oils In Rats, Robert Leslie Gregory
Intestinal Absorption And Lipolysis Of Safflower Oil And Other Unsaturated Vegetable Oils In Rats, Robert Leslie Gregory
Master's Theses
The intestinal lipolysis and absorption of safflower, corn, peanut, olive, cottonseed and soybean oils were studied in the rat. Oils and pancreatic lipase were injected into the rat jejunum and ileum (ligated in situ), and the amount of esterified fatty acids absorbed and free fatty acids present in the gut after 3 hours was determined.
Safflower oil was absorbed significantly less than the other oils. There was no significant difference between the absorption rates of the other oils. When the oils were subjected to porcine pancreatic lipase in vitro, safflower oil also exhibited the lowest rate of hydrolysis.
The rates …
The Induced Differentiation Of Mouse Ectoderm To Epidermis By Growth On Freeze-Thawed Dermis, Albert Joseph Banes
The Induced Differentiation Of Mouse Ectoderm To Epidermis By Growth On Freeze-Thawed Dermis, Albert Joseph Banes
Master's Theses
Previous investigators have grown or maintained adult or embryonic skin in tissue culture and on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of chickens. These studies have revealed two important factors involved in culturing skin: (1) the presence of an inducer which originates in the dermis and affects the phenotype of epithelial cells; and (2) the influence of the physical surface of the substrate on which epidermis is cultured.
The current investigation presents evidence that ectoderm from the limb buds of 10 to 12 day-old mouse embryos can form an epidermis when combined with dermis killed by alternate freezing and thawing, and cultured …

Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan
Effects Of Insulin, Sodium And D-Glucose On Amino Acid Absorption In The Intestine Of Rats, Andre-Gerard Craan
Dissertations and Theses
Amino acid absorption across rat intestine in vitro was inhibited or stimulated by insulin depending on the hormone serosal concentration.
The absence of sodium ions from the incubating solution resulted in a significant decrease of L-alanine absorption. However, L-alanine was enhanced in a sodium-free medium by the addition of insulin on the serosal side of the intestine.
A sizable decrease in L-alanine and L-lysine absorption was produced by introduction of D-glucose (0.2 % and 2 %) in the Krebs-Ringer's incubating buffer. Nevertheless, the presence of D-glucose did not prevent the stimulatory effect of insulin on amino acid absorption.
Induction Of Cytokinin-Independent Tobacco Tissues By Substituted Fluorenes, Thomas W. Bednar, Elfriede M. Linsmaier-Bednar
Induction Of Cytokinin-Independent Tobacco Tissues By Substituted Fluorenes, Thomas W. Bednar, Elfriede M. Linsmaier-Bednar
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Two morphactins and three aminofluorenes initiated the formation of compact tissue nodules in hormone-dependent tobacco callus cultures. These nodules, upon subculture, behaved like partially transformed plant tumors. They grew on cytokinin-free media, while control callus and nonnodule tissue still required an exogenous cytokinin source. The data indicate that substituted fluorenes, including carcinogenic aminofluorenes, can cause a neoplastic growth response in cultured tobacco tissues. Of particular interest in this study is the finding that a directed and heritable cellular change is induced in tobacco tissue in which a specific (the endogenous cytokinin) biosynthetic system is regularly and persistently activated.
Observation Of A Compensatory Mechanism In The Rat During Carbon Tetrachloride Exposure, Mable H. Orndorff
Observation Of A Compensatory Mechanism In The Rat During Carbon Tetrachloride Exposure, Mable H. Orndorff
Biology ETDs
Physical, chemical, and physiological responses of rats, after carbon tetrachloride inhalation (400 ppm) and comparable injection exposure, are presented and discussed. Data collected during the last four of five biweekly exposures illustrate some of the acute effects of CC14 exposure superimposed on a pattern of chronic response. Fat deposition is increased as indicated by the rapid and substantial weight gains through the fourth exposure week. Final liver-body weight ratios are high in the CC14 - treated animals. The experimental rats excrete more urea after week 3, whereas they have stable creatinine excretion until the fifth week. Urea-creatinine ratios …
Phospholipid Inhibitor Inactivation As A Mechanism For The Activation Of Renin By Cadmium Ions, Thomas Emanuel Gallant
Phospholipid Inhibitor Inactivation As A Mechanism For The Activation Of Renin By Cadmium Ions, Thomas Emanuel Gallant
Senior Scholar Papers
Incubation of bovine kidney homogenates with CdCl or ZnCl2 doubles their renin activity as measured by rat bioassay. It is suggested that the activation of renin by these divalent cations results from their interference with the renin inhibitor system described by Sen et al., (1968). Failure of the inhibitor to reassociate with renin upon removal of cadmium ions by EDTA supports their renin control model. It is suggested that either renin samples prepared directly from tissue without the use of acetone powder preparations contain little phospholipase A or cadmium inactivates phospholipase A. In the absence of active phospholipase A, conversion …

Effects Of Dmso And Propham On Mitosis In Root Tips Of Secale Cereale, Max Rosequist
Effects Of Dmso And Propham On Mitosis In Root Tips Of Secale Cereale, Max Rosequist
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and propham (isopropyl carbanilate) were investigated to determine their effect singly and in combination on mitoses in rye (Secale cereale) root tip cells. Root tips were prepared for observation by the paraffin and aceto-carmine squash methods. Results showed DMSO caused the following abnormalities: arrested metaphases, multipolar spindles, multinucleate cells, stickiness, shortened chromosomes, and mitotic inhibition. Cells from propham treated root tips exhibited the same abnormalities as those treated with DMSO. In addition, propham treatments resulted in polyploid cells and chromosome granulation. In combination, DMSO and propham caused all the abnormalities mentioned above except polyploidy. In …

Ribose 5'-Phosphate Aminotransferase Of Salmonella Typhimurium, Gulamnabi Y. Vahora
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ribose-5 '-phosphate aminotransferase, an alternate first enzyme in the purine de novo pathway, has been purified about 800-fold from Salmonella typhimurium (pur D-55 ). The enzyme is distinct from ribosylpyrophosphate-5'-phosphate amidotransferase (E C 2.4.2.14), has an approximate molecular weight of 229,000, and requires ribose-5'-phosphate, ATP and either ammonium ion, carbamyl phosphate or L-glutamine, to synthesize 5'-phosphoribosylamine (PRA). A coupled assay system, employing a S. typhimurium (pur G-310) extract as the coupling-agent source, was used to measure the enzyme. PRA production in this system was inhibited by higher ribose-5' -phosphate concentrations and longer (over 10 minutes) incubation periods. It …
Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr.
Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The urolithiasis condition investigated occurred at a "hard water" hatchery in Utah after the trout were changed from a meat diet to a commercial pelleted fish feed as a sole sustaining diet in 1961. Numerous diet modifications proved unsuccessful in preventing urolithiasis at the hatchery. It was eventually determined that different commercial diets resulted in varied percentages of trout developing urolithiasis. The urolithic deposits found in the kidney tubules were amorphous and composed of calcium phosphate (apatite) and an organic matrix. Bacterial contamination of the kidneys was not an important factor in the formation of urolithiasis. Rainbow trout containing urolithic …

An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The oral plate sense organs of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., have been investigated employing an electrophysiological technique which allows simultaneous stimulation and recording.
The results of the study present evidence that the four bipolar sense cells innervating the sensory papillae on the oral surface of the hypopharynx are chemoreceptors. The sensory papillae respond to cations, glucose, water, and amino acids. Evidence for the absence of a mechanosensory cell is presented. The data concerning the sensory structures agree with the current theories of chemoreception.
Isolation And Characterization Of Autosomal Male Sterile Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lynn J. Romrell
Isolation And Characterization Of Autosomal Male Sterile Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lynn J. Romrell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to study the genetic control of spermiogenesis, recessive, male-sterile, autosomal mutants of Drosophila melanogaster were induced with ethyl methanesulfonate. A total of 31 mutants were recovered, 15 of which were located on the second chromosome and 16 on the third chromosome. Eight second- and 6 third-chromosome mutants demonstrating sterility in all homozygous males were used for further analysis.
Complementation tests showed that 2 of the 8 second chromosome mutants (and none of the 6 third chromosome mutants) were noncomplementing, indicating that two of the mutants produced were alleles of the same locus. Mapping of the second chromosome mutants …

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. The objectives of the study are: (1) to determine trace metal balance at different locations in Lake Mead, (2) to measure biological productivity and conduct plankton population counts at each sampling …

The Effects Of Para-Chlorophenylalanine On A Conditioned Emotional Response In Rats, Roy J. Hartmann
Theses & Dissertations
The initial intent of this study was to investigate p-CPA's actions on conditioned "anxiety" (CER) in rats in order to ascertain whether the derived effects were qualitatively similar to those previously reported for "conflict" behavior. Specifically, the goals of this study were to determine if p-CPA would reinstate lever-pressing behavior that had been suppressed by a series of tone-shock pairings. If a change in behavior did occur, would the reintroduction of serotonin, through the use of 5-HTP, return the behavior to pre-drug control levels.
