The Influence Of Somatic Investment On The Patterns Of Reproduction In Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Jeffrey D. Wetherington Jul 1982

The Influence Of Somatic Investment On The Patterns Of Reproduction In Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Jeffrey D. Wetherington

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In Poecilia latipinna size-specific reproductive and survivorship patterns were correlated with changes in habitat availability. Of the numerous physical, chemical, and biological parameters associated with a reduction in available habitat, probably the most important was reduced food availability. Large (old) females, theoretically with a low reproductive value, allocated energy to reproduction regardless of habitat and, presumably, food availability. When reproductive activities were initiated in March, habitat availability was modest. In association with a severe reduction in available habitat in April, large females were subject to a substantial loss of body weight during the yolk-loading phase of the reproductive cycle. This …

The Cytoskeletal System Of Nucleated Erythrocytes. I. Composition And Function Of Major Elements, William D. Cohen, Diana Bartelt, Richard Jaeger, George M. Langford, Iris Nemhauser Jun 1982

The Cytoskeletal System Of Nucleated Erythrocytes. I. Composition And Function Of Major Elements, William D. Cohen, Diana Bartelt, Richard Jaeger, George M. Langford, Iris Nemhauser

Biology - All Scholarship

We have studied the dogfish erythrocyte cytoskeletal system, which consists of a marginal band of microtubules (MB) and trans-marginal band material (TBM). The TBM appeared in whole mounts as a rough irregular network and in thin sections as a surface-delimiting layer completely enclosing nucleus and MB. In cells incubated at 0 degrees C for 30 min or more, the MB disappeared but the TBM remained. MB reassembly occurred with rewarming, and was inhibited by colchicine. Flattened elliptical erythrocyte morphology was retained even when MBs were absent. Total solubilization of MB and TBM at low pH, or dissolution of whole anucleate …

The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood May 1982

The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood

Master's Theses

The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.

Activities Of Identified Interneurons, Motoneurons, And Muscle Fibers During Fictive Swimming In The Lamprey And Effects Of Reticulospinal And Dorsal Cell Stimulation, James T. Buchanan, Avis H. Cohen May 1982

Activities Of Identified Interneurons, Motoneurons, And Muscle Fibers During Fictive Swimming In The Lamprey And Effects Of Reticulospinal And Dorsal Cell Stimulation, James T. Buchanan, Avis H. Cohen

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

1. Application of D-glutamate to the isolated spinal cord of the lamprey produces phasic activity in ventral roots, which is similar to that of the muscles of the intact swimming animal (5,18). Therefore, the isolated spinal cord may be used as a convenient model for the investigation of the generation of locomotor rhythms in a vertebrate. 2. Almost all slow muscle fibers exhibited excitatory junctional potentials (EJPs) during swimming activity. The number of EJPs per cycle increased with the intensity of ventral root (VR) bursting. Few twitch fibers were active, and these fired action potentials only during high intensities of …

Estimating Esterase And Monooxygenase Detoxication By Bioassay, Electrophoresis And Metabolic Studies In Pea Aphid, Acrythosiphon Pisum (Harris) Populations (Homoptera: Aphididae), Deifalla H. Al-Rajhi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The role of esterases and monooxygenase in the detoxication vii processes of field populations of pea aphids was studied in relation to seasonal changes, developmental stage, and treatment with DEF and piperonyl butoxide. LCSO values for 12 hour exposure periods in glass vials ra nged from 0.04-2.3 micrograms / vial and 820-4871 J.Jg/vial for paraoxon and carbaryl, respectively. Topical bioassays showed the adults to be more tolerant to paraoxon (LDSO of 1. 4-12.3 ng/aphid) toxicity than nymphs (LDSO of 0.13-4. 7 ng/aphid).

Treatment with DEF® (S,S.S-tributylphosphorotrithioate) enhanced paraoxon toxicity against the pea aphid whereas piperonyl butoxide had little …

The Characterization Of Carbamate Resistance In The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Say), In Comparison With The House Fly, Musca Domestica (L), Randy L. Rose

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Resistant and susceptible populations of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), and the house fly, Musca domestica (L), were compared with respect to carbofuran and carbaryl toxicity in the presence and absence of the synergist, piperonyl butoxide. Resistance levels of the New Jersey population when compared with the susceptible Logan population by topical application of carbaryl and carbofuran were > 833 and 820, respectively. A resistance level of 583 was determined from carbofuran bioassays of Rutgers and NAIDM house flies. Similar levels of resistance development between these species suggests the possibility that similar resistance mechanisms may be involved.

Reproductive Behavioral And Physiological Traits In Domestic, Wild, And Hybrid Ovis, Kara-Lynn Crocker-Bedford May 1982

Reproductive Behavioral And Physiological Traits In Domestic, Wild, And Hybrid Ovis, Kara-Lynn Crocker-Bedford

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was part of a program to develop new genotypes of sheep (Ovis spp.) and goats (Capra spp.) which are more useful for food and fiber production. The study examined the influence of domestication on behavioral and physiological traits of ewes and lambs, the influence of a single or twin offspring on ewe and lamb behaviors, and general relationships between ewes and lambs during the lambs' first month of life.

Domestication has caused the intensities of observed traits to diverge greatly from the tendencies shown by wild populations. Domestication has produced increases in measurements associated with maternal …

Structure Of Maltoheptaose By Difference Fourier Methods And A Model For Glycogen, E. Goldsmith, S. Sprang, R. Fletterick Apr 1982

Structure Of Maltoheptaose By Difference Fourier Methods And A Model For Glycogen, E. Goldsmith, S. Sprang, R. Fletterick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The structure of the glucose heptamer, maltoheptaose, has been determined by difference Fourier analysis at 0.25 nm resolution through its binding to phosphorylase a. It is a left-handed helical structure, with 6.5 glucose residues per turn and a rise per residue of 2.4 Å. The molecule shows short-range order when no protein is present to stabilize its conformation in solution. With one exception, the individual torsion angles between sugar residues vary over a narrow range and preserve a good O(2)O(3′) hydrogen bond. The length of an individual chain for glycogen can be extrapolated from the maltoheptaose data …

Sunset As An Orientational Cue For A Nocturnal Migrant, The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), James Pauly Apr 1982

Sunset As An Orientational Cue For A Nocturnal Migrant, The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), James Pauly

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The possibility that nocturnal migrants use sunset as an orientational cue was explored in the White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) between 1 April and 24 April, 1981. Orientation tests were run on the roof of the biology building at Western Kentucky University when birds were assumed to be in the proper physiological condition for migration. Birds exposed to only nighttime skies, birds isolated from all visual cues, and birds exposed to both daytime and nighttime skies did not exhibit the northward directional preference appropriate for the season tested. However, White-throated Sparrows exposed only to sunset and tested in the absence …

Differences Associated With Mating Type Alleles In Myxomycetes, Robert M. Queen Apr 1982

Differences Associated With Mating Type Alleles In Myxomycetes, Robert M. Queen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Differences associated with the mating type alleles of Didymium iridis and Physarum polycephalum were examined with fluorescent antibody and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Heteroabsorption of each anti-myxamoebal serum followed by testing serum activity using immunofluorescence showed there is no strain-specific activity in any of the anti-myxamoebal sera, but the sera was shown, to be genera specific. Intergeneric differences and similarities were shown in the electrophoretic patterns of the myxamoebal protein extracts from P. polycephalum, D. iridis, and Dictyostelium discoideum when compared. Intraspecific differences were noted in D. iridis.

Recovery Time Course In Contractile Function Of Fast And Slow Skeletal Muscle After Hindlimb Immobilization, Frank Arthur Witzmann, D. H. Kim, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Contractile properties were evaluated in rats remobilized after 6 wk of hindlimb casting to evaluate the regenerative capacity of fast and slow skeletal muscles. Contractile parameters were determined in vitro (22ºC) in the type I soleus (SOL), type IIA and IIB extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and the type IIB superficial vastus lateralis (SVL). Immobilization (IM) shortened the SOL isometric twitch duration after which contraction time and half-relaxation time required 4 and 7 days to recover, respectively. In contrast, IM prolonged the twitch in the EDL and SVL and recovery required 14 and 7 days, respectively. Peak tetanic tension (g/cm2 …

Synthesis Of Low Molecular Weight Heat Shock Peptides Stimulated By Ecdysterone In A Cultured Drosophila Cell Line., Robert C. Ireland, Edward M. Berger Feb 1982

Synthesis Of Low Molecular Weight Heat Shock Peptides Stimulated By Ecdysterone In A Cultured Drosophila Cell Line., Robert C. Ireland, Edward M. Berger

Dartmouth Scholarship

Treatment of Schneider's line 3 Drosophila cells with the steroid hormone ecdysterone rapidly stimulated the synthesis and accumulation of the polypeptide previously designated p7 [Berger, E. M., Ireland, R. C. & Wyss, C. (1980) Somatic Cell Genet. 6, 119-129]. In this report, p7 is identified as the 23,000-dalton heat shock polypeptide (hsp23). In addition to hsp23, the synthesis of the low molecular weight heat shock polypeptides hsp22, hsp26, and hsp27 was also stimulated by ecdysterone, although to different extents. Hybridization of a nick-translated genomic clone containing the hsp23 gene to a total RNA blot showed that ecdysterone stimulation of hsp23 …

Polygyny And Polydomy In Three North American Species Of The Ant Genus Leptothorax Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Thomas M. Alloway, Robin Stuart, Cynthia Thomas, Alfred Buschinger, Mary Talbot

Faculty Scholarship

This paper deals with certain behavioral and ecological factors which may be relevant to the evolution and maintenance of social parasitism in ants. We will argue that some of the same factors which might predispose one species to evolve into a social parasite might make resistance to parasitism difficult for a closely related species.

Genetic Recombination In Nocardia Asteroides, Kenneth L. Kasweck, Melissa L. Little Jan 1982

Genetic Recombination In Nocardia Asteroides, Kenneth L. Kasweck, Melissa L. Little

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Gene recombination between strains of N. asteroides of diverse origins has been demonstrated. In particular pairwise combinations, recombinants made up 0.01% of the population. All nine selectable recombinant classes were recovered from a cross between KK4-47 his-10 leu-1 and KK6-119 met-3 phe-3. Recombinants with an auxotrophic marker from each parent constituted 21% of the recombinants.

Effects Of Various Hormones On Human Carcinoma Cell Proliferation, Y. L. Gao, B. S. Leung, A. H. Potter, W.C.Y. Yu Jan 1982

Effects Of Various Hormones On Human Carcinoma Cell Proliferation, Y. L. Gao, B. S. Leung, A. H. Potter, W.C.Y. Yu

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Cell proliferation of a mammary adenocarcinoma cell line, CAMA-1. is affected by a number of steroid hormones and prolactin in long-term cultures. Estrogenic compounds stimulate cell growth while antiestrogenic compounds inhibit it. Prolactin can synergize the estrogenic effect. Progesterone, glucocorticoid or androgen reduce cell proliferation. Dihydrotestosterone is a very potent inhibitor,- effective at as low as 10 nM, and its effect is independent of estrogen action. Cortisol is a less effective inhibitor at concentrations below 10 nM; at these levels cortisol exhibits a slight inhibition which appears to be unrelated to estrogenic action. However, at higher concentrations, cortisol markedly reduces …

Temporal And Phenomenological Aspects Of Social Behavior In Captive Wolves (Canis Lupus L.), Paul C. Paquet Jan 1982

Temporal And Phenomenological Aspects Of Social Behavior In Captive Wolves (Canis Lupus L.), Paul C. Paquet

Dissertations and Theses

Although cooperative behavior is generally acknowledged to occur among wolves, there is a lack of systematically collected data confirming the extent of development. The objectives of this study were to collect long-term, detailed observations documenting the role of social structure, seasonal influences, and individual participation in wolf pack cooperative activities. Individual cooperative strategies were associated with age, sex, and social positions and critically compared with results of similar studies. Emphasis was placed on quantifying group and dyadic relationships, focusing on reproductive strategies and dominance structure. Additional data were collected on denning behavior, maternal care behavior, scent marking, and spontaneous individual …

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong Jan 1982

Organic N-Chloramines: Chemistry And Toxicology, Frank E. Scully, Jr., Maxwell A. Bempong

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The stability of aqueous solutions of organic N-chloramines, suspected of contaminating chlorinated water, has been studied. Two factors influence the decomposition of solutions of N-chloropiperidine and N-chlorodiethylamine: a spontaneous decomposition and photodecomposition. Since solutions of these compounds are relatively long-lived, a need for an analytical method for their identification is discussed. A new method is described which involves reaction of organic N-chloramines with arenesulfinic acid salts. The method gives high yields of stable arenesulfonamides. Several toxicological studies of N-chloropiperidine are described. The compound is mutagenic by Ames assay in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA 100 and does not require metabolic activation …

The Ecology Of Mutualism, Douglas H. Boucher, Sam James, Kathleen H. Keeler Jan 1982

The Ecology Of Mutualism, Douglas H. Boucher, Sam James, Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Elementary ecology texts tell us that organisms interact in three fundamen tal ways, generally given the names competition, predation, and mutualism. The third member has gotten short shrift (264), and even its name is not generally agreed on. Terms that may be considered synonyms, in whole or part, are symbiosis, commensalism, cooperation, protocooperation, mutual aid, facilitation, reciprocal altruism, and entraide. We use the term mutualism, defined as "an interaction between species that is beneficial to both," since it has both historical priority (311) and general currency. Symbiosis is "the living together of two organisms in close association," and …

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor Jan 1982

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor

Theses and Dissertations

Although the adaptive significance of daily and seasonal fattening of birds has been studied by many investigators (see Odum, 1965; King, 1972; Blem, 1976a), surprisingly little is known about the interactions of proximate and ultimate environmental factors regulating avian lipid levels. An exception is the study by Evans (1969). He found that lipid levels in Yellow Buntings (Emberiza citrinella) were more closely correlated with long-term temperature averages than with temperatures of the day of capture, or the days preceding or following capture. This is an indication that temperature may be more important as an ultimate control of fattening, through natural …

A Calcium-Phosphate-Phospholipid Complex Extracted From Rats Exhibiting Calciphylactic Nephrocalcinosis, Elaine Bardes Haynes Jan 1982

A Calcium-Phosphate-Phospholipid Complex Extracted From Rats Exhibiting Calciphylactic Nephrocalcinosis, Elaine Bardes Haynes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis was induced in female Sprague Dawley rats by treatment with dihydrotachysterol (0.5 mg/100g body weight) and thallous acetate (2 mg/100 g body weight). A calcium-phosphatephospholipid complex was isolated from rat kidneys exhibiting calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis and from untreated controls. There was a statistically significant greater quantity of complex extractable after calciphylaxis was induced. An average of 8.0% of the total phospholipid extracted from the tissue was present in complexed form in treated animals and 3.7 % in control animals. The phospholipid component of the complex was identified as phosphatidyl serine. The ratio of calcium to phosphate was less than …

Small Mammals In Openings In Virginia's Dismal Swamp, Robert K. Rose Dec 1981

Small Mammals In Openings In Virginia's Dismal Swamp, Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In a study of small mammals of openings in the Dismal Swamp of Virginia, seven species were obtained using pitfall traps. Samples included several species rarely caught in the Swamp - seven specimens of the Dismal Swamp subspecies of the southern bog lemming, Synaptomys cooperi helaletes, the first collected in this century; two least shrews, Cryptotis parva; and 15 southeastern shrews, Sorex longirostris fisheri . Results are compared to previous studies, conducted primarily in forested habitats, in which the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, and the golden mouse, Ochrotomys nuttalli, were numerically dominant.

The Hairless-Obese Mouse, William D. Stansfield Nov 1981

The Hairless-Obese Mouse, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Viable mice homozygous for two recessive autosomal genes, hairless (hr) and obese (ob) were produced with an average life span of 538 ± 34.1 days. On the average, hairless-obese mice weighed about 73 percent as much as obese mice. Since obese mice consumed approximately 73 percent as much oxygen per gram body weight per hour as hairless-obese mice at about 24°C, the weight averages appear to be closely inversely related to the oxygen consumption averages. The presence or absence of pelage seems to make a negligible contribution to oxygen consumption in these two types of obese …

Movements And Feeding Ecology Of Immature Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Mary T. Mendonca

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The seasonal and diel movements of fourteen immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Mosquito, Lagoon, Florida were monitored using sonic telemetry. The feeding ecology of this turtle population was also studied using dissection and stomach flushing techniques. An attempt was made to relate the movement patterns of the turtles to their feeding habits. The immature green turtles were found to make seemingly random, long distance movements (X╠äkm moved/day=7.79) and to remain in deeper waters (X╠ädepth=1.63m), apparently not feeding, when water temperatures fell below 19┬░C. When average water temperatures ranged between 19-25┬░C, the turtles were found primarily in shallow waters (X╠ädepth=1.1m) …
