Field Metabolic Rate And Food Consumption By Free-Living Anna's Hummingbirds (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers, Kenneth A. Nagy
Field Metabolic Rate And Food Consumption By Free-Living Anna's Hummingbirds (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers, Kenneth A. Nagy
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
We measured C02 production and water flux using doubly labeled water in wild Anna's hummingbirds living in the Santa Ana Mountains of Southern California during autumn (September) of 1981. The estimated field metabolic rate (FMR) of a hummingbird maintaining a constant body mass (mean 4.48 g) is about 32 kl/day, which is 5.2 times basal metabolic rate (BMR). Metabolic rates during daylight hours were about 6.8 X BMR, less than one-half that expected for an Anna's hummingbird in continuous hovering flight. We estimated nighttime metabolism to be near 2.1 X BMR, which is about what would be expected for a …
Variation In Female Somatic Condition And Its Relationship To Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Richard Eugene Smith
Variation In Female Somatic Condition And Its Relationship To Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Richard Eugene Smith
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Seasonal and gestational variation in the somatic and reproductive condition of females was determined for two east-central Florida populations of the livebearing fish Poecilia latipinna. Females were sampled monthly between January 1985 and January 1986 at Badge Station (BDGST) and Titusville Ditch (TDTCH) study sites. In addition, collections were made at approximately 8 day intervals in April and August. Somatic condition was determined by calculating index values for dry weight (somatic tissue minus water), lipid, and protein from overall regression equations relating these components to female body size. Significant seasonal variation in somatic condition existed within the two study sites. …

Age, Growth, And Movement Patterns Of The Atlantic Stingray, Dasyatis Sabina, In A Florida Coastal Lagoon System, Thomas Henry Schmid
Age, Growth, And Movement Patterns Of The Atlantic Stingray, Dasyatis Sabina, In A Florida Coastal Lagoon System, Thomas Henry Schmid
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Age, growth rates, and patterns of movement were studied in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, in the Indian River lagoon system in east central Florida. Age was estimated using the growth rings on the vertebral centrum and tretacycline marking. Tetracycline injections produced clear readable rings in all pups, but failed to be incorporated into the centra of adults. Females possess more centrum rings than males, but annual periodicity could not be verified. Growth rates were determined from aquarium held pups and adults and from tagged and recaptured animals. Males appeared to reach maturity in about two years, females in slightly …
Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The structure and some developmental aspects of the cupules of 22 species of paleotropical Castanopsis are discussed and illustrated. Some species have cupules massively invested with strong, sharp spines, but others are less spiny, and some are nearly smooth. Most cupular armament results from spines produced axillary to the valvular scales and basally adnate to them. Columns of scales straddling the sutures between the cupular valves do not become spines, but the numerous scales elsewhere on the valves become somewhat spiny with age. Dehiscence in the spiny-valved species is mostly along the sutures. The smooth cupules of some species have …

Fish Aid: The Lake Mead Fertilization Project, Richard Axler, Larry Paulson, Peter Vaux, Patrick Sollberger, Donald H. Baepler
Publications (WR)
Sport fishing at Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona is a resource valued at nearly $100 million per year to southern Nevada. During the past two decades, salmonids, mostly trout, have disappeared entirely, the largemouth bass catch has drastically declined despite greater fishing pressure, and the condition factors for striped bass have steadily deteriorated. It appears that a major reduction in phosphorus loading caused by the upstream impoundment of the Colorado River to form Lake Powell in 1963 and advanced wastewater treatment removal of phosphorus from domestic wastewater inflows in 1981 are the principal factors responsible for decreased production at …

Incubation Energetics Of The Laysan Albatross, Ted N. Pettit, K A. Nagy, Hugh I. Ellis, G Causey Whittow
Biology: Faculty Scholarship
The energy expenditure of incubating and foraging Laysan Albatross (Diomedea immutabilis, mean body weight 3.07 kg) was estimated by means of the doubly-la- belled water technique. During incubation, the energy expenditure was similar to that of resting birds that were not incubating an egg. The energy expenditure of foraging albatross (2072 kJ/day) was 2.6 times that of resting birds. It was concluded that the energy expenditure of the tropical Laysan Albatross was not less than that of species foraging over cold, high-latitude oceans. An energy budget compiled for an incubating pair of albatross revealed that the energy expenditure of the …
Determinants Of Small Rodent Distribution And Abundance In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem: Influences Of Seeds, Ants And Shrubs, Linda Suzanne Broome
Determinants Of Small Rodent Distribution And Abundance In A Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem: Influences Of Seeds, Ants And Shrubs, Linda Suzanne Broome
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study had two major objectives; firstly to test the hypothesis of ongoing competition for seeds between small rodents and harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex occidental is, in a cold desert ecosystem; secondly to elucidate how seed abundance and shrub cover influence the distribution and abundance of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus. The study area was a sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominated shrubsteppe in southwestern Wyoming. Responses of the small mammal community to ant removal and food addition were assessed on replicated study plots between September 1981 and September 1983. Food addition and shrub removal manipulations were continued from September 1983 …

Depth Profiles And Soil Textures Of The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau Preserve, Riverside County, California, Ralph Charles Workman Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this project was to study the edaphic and topographic characteristics of the 13 vernal pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau Preserve, thus documenting the role soil texture plays in vernal pool formation.
Several field and laboratory procedures were used to demonstrate that there is a higher percentage of clay present within vernal pools than in soils outside the margin of the pools, for 11 out of the 13 pools. Statistical tests showed that the percentage of clay was highly significant within the center soil of the pool as compared to the soil outside the margin of the …

Microcorrosion Casting In Normal And Pathological Biliary Tree Morphology, E. Gaudio, L. Pannarale, F. Carpino, G. Marinozzi
Scanning Microscopy
The organization of the intrahepatic biliary tree was studied in three dimensions by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) corrosion casts, in normal and cholestatic rat liver.
In the normal liver the observation revealed the features of the biliary passages from the bile canaliculi to the canaliculo-ductular junction, to the ductules and the bile ducts, confirming previous SEM observations.
In cholestatic liver, the modifications and the proliferation of bile ductules appear clearly.
Resin flow from canalicular to sinusoidal network was never observed.
The method was found to be very useful in the evaluation of the architecture of the intrahepatic biliary tree, under …

Extraneous Background-Correction Program For Matrix Bound Multiple Point X-Ray Microanalysis, W. C. De Bruijn, M. P. C. Van Miert
Scanning Microscopy
A program is described that allows online determination of extraneous background in multiple point X-ray microanalytical matrices. The program is based upon the calculations of the extraneous background for the film (when present), the standard and the unknown by (100 sec.) point analysis. The program searches for a peak-free part of the spectrum in which the calculated value for the extraneous background is about equal to the value in this region of the spectrum (=be). Online the contents of this be-region is subtracted from an unmanipulated continuum region in the vicinity of the element present in …
Presence Of Calcium Oxalate Crystals In The Mammalian Thyroid Gland, Raymond L. Hackett, Saeed R. Khan
Presence Of Calcium Oxalate Crystals In The Mammalian Thyroid Gland, Raymond L. Hackett, Saeed R. Khan
Scanning Microscopy
Birefringent crystals of calcium oxalate have been previously identified in the colloid of human thyroid glands. We found such crystals in 19/20 adult thyroids at autopsy, in 4/ 20 infants at autopsy, and, using frozen sections, in 19/20 thyroids partially or totally removed at surgery. These crystals were soluble in hydrochloric acid, insoluble in acetic acid, and contained only calcium by energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, confirming their calcium oxalate character. Similar crystals were found in equine and ovine thyroids.
The Impact Of Weather On Kingbird Foraging Behavior, Michael T. Murphy
The Impact Of Weather On Kingbird Foraging Behavior, Michael T. Murphy
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Foraging data on Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus) were collected during the early breeding season in eastern Kansas to test the hypothesis that foraging rate and other aspects of foraging behavior vary with weather. Foraging characteristics of five additional kingbird species were also examined to assess Fitzpatrick's (1980) generalization that kingbirds (Tyrannus spp.) are aerial hawking specialists. In Eastern Kingbirds, total foraging rate was independent of air temperature, cloud cover, wind speed, and time of day, but the rate of aerial hawking varied directly with air temperature and inversely with cloud cover (both P < 0.05). Effects of the two variables were additive. The percentage of foraging movements that were aerial hawks also increased with temperature and declined with cloud cover, and, hover-gleaning and perch-to-ground sallying were observed mainly during cloudy weather. Sally (i.e., foraging flight) distance correlated directly with perch height and air temperature, and large insects were captured almost exclusively in long upward or horizontal flights. I interpret these data to indicate that foraging behavior and the capture of large, flying insects depends on weather because of how it affects the activity of insect prey. Foraging data on kingbirds support Fitzpatrick's generalization, but the relative use of aerial hawking varies considerably among species. Resident Tropical Kingbirds( T. melancholicus) are the most specialized foragers, whereas the migrant and widely distributed Eastern Kingbird appears to be the most generalized. Certain habitats also appear to favor the use of particular foraging methods (e.g., outward striking in grasslands and perch-to-ground sallying in drier, open habitats).

Lake Mead Prefertilization Study: Preliminary Nutrient Enhancement Studies In Lake Mead, Richard P. Axler, Larry J. Paulson, Patrick J. Sollberger, Donald H. Baepler, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Studies conducted by the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV), the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD), The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP), and the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) have identified decreased algal production as a major factor involved in the decline of the Lake Mead sport fishery. Phosphorus-laden silt particles in the Colorado River have been sedimenting out in Lake Powell since the completion of Glen Canyon Dam 286 miles upstream in 1963. This sharp decrease in phosphorus loading to Lake Mead (>5000 tons per year) has resulted in decreased …
The Effect Of Fatigue On Essential Element Distribution In The Rabbit Masseter, M. B. Engel, J. K. Bressman
The Effect Of Fatigue On Essential Element Distribution In The Rabbit Masseter, M. B. Engel, J. K. Bressman
Scanning Microscopy
The rabbit masseter is composed of mainly fast fatiguable type IIB fibers which give a positive mATPase reaction at pH 9.3. To study the effect of fatigue on the distribution of some crucial elements, the masseter was stimulated electrically for 45 minutes. The contralateral muscle served as a control. Control and experimental tissues were rapidly excised, and frozen in isopentane cooled to -150°C in liquid nitrogen. Sections were cut in a cryostat and prepared by freeze-drying. Water content of fatigued muscle was significantly higher than controls: 79.3% versus 77.3%. The fatigued state was verified by glycogen depletion viewed in PAS-stained …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research Publications
The Yellow-shafted Flicker (Colaptes auratus auratus) and Red-shafted Flicker (C. a. cafer) form a stable, narrow hybrid zone on the western Great Plains of North America. Allozyme data were obtained from 31 structural gene loci for 33 samples representing 246 Northern Flickers from throughout the Great Plains. Flickers were approximately equivalent to other birds in terms of proportion of polymorphic loci (P = 0.207) and average heterozygosity (H = 0.056). There was no concordant variation between plumage characters and allelic frequencies.
Gene-diversity analysis indicated that 92.5% of the genic variation occurred as within-deme heterozygosity ( …
A Possible Site Of Calcium Regulation In Rat Exocrine Pancreas Cells: An X-Ray Microanalytical Study, Norbert Roos
A Possible Site Of Calcium Regulation In Rat Exocrine Pancreas Cells: An X-Ray Microanalytical Study, Norbert Roos

Nonbreeding and sometimes transient beavers, Castor canadensis, cut a variety of woody plants throughout the year during a 15-month study at three sites in southeastern Virginia. Ten species of trees were cut in proportions greater than would be expected according to their availabilities. Beavers heavily used viburnum, alder, ironwood, bayberry, tulip poplar, and dogwood. Winter food caches were constructed but were only lightly used.
Influence Of Cytomatrix Proteins On Water And On Ions In Cells, I. L. Cameron, G. D. Fullerton, N. K. R. Smith
Influence Of Cytomatrix Proteins On Water And On Ions In Cells, I. L. Cameron, G. D. Fullerton, N. K. R. Smith
Scanning Microscopy
This review concerns the influence that cytomatrix proteins have on the motional properties of water and on the major inorganic ions in cells. The techniques we used for study of water in cells and on the cytomatrix proteins include: pulsed NMR of water protons, quench cooled ice crystal imprint size, and osmotic behavior. The technique for study of ions involved use of electron-probe X-ray microanalysis of thin cryosections of cells. The cytomatrix was found to play the major role in determining the extent of hydration water in cells, The amount of hydration water varied greatly between cell types (e.g., lens …

Thermal Enhancement Of Cellular Radiation Damage: A Review Of Complementary And Synergistic Effects, G. Peter Raaphorst, J. G. Szekely
Scanning Microscopy
Hyperthermia treatment can kill mammalian cells in a time and temperature dependent manner. Thermal sensitivity varies extensively among various cell lines in culture and cellular molecular and ultrastructural studies have not resolved which cellular mechanisms underlie thermal cell killing and radiosensitization. The response of cells to heat and radiation are complementary under certain conditions found in human tumors, such as hypoxia, low pH, low nutrient and the S-phase of the cell cycle. Thus, hyperthermia can be used as a complementary treatment modality in the radiotherapy of human cancer. Further studies show that heat treatment causes radiosensitization which is in part …
Sertoli Cell Death By Apoptosis In The Immature Rat Testis Following X-Irradiation, David J. Allan, Glenda C. Gobé, Brian V. Harmon
Sertoli Cell Death By Apoptosis In The Immature Rat Testis Following X-Irradiation, David J. Allan, Glenda C. Gobé, Brian V. Harmon
Scanning Microscopy
The importance of the morphological study of cell death has recently been emphasized by the recognition that the ultrastructural features of dying cells allow categorization of the death as either apoptosis or necrosis. This classification enables inferences to be drawn about the mechanism and biological significance of the death occurring in a particular set of circumstances.
In this study, Sertoli cell death induced in the immature testis of three and four day old rats by 5 Gy (500 rads) x-irradiation was described by light and transmission electron microscopy with the objective of categorizing the death as apoptosis or necrosis. The …
X-Ray-Induced Cell Death By Apoptosis In The Immature Rat Cerebellum, Brian V. Harmon, David J. Allan
X-Ray-Induced Cell Death By Apoptosis In The Immature Rat Cerebellum, Brian V. Harmon, David J. Allan
Scanning Microscopy
The cells of the external granular layer (EGL) of the developing cerebellum are known to be particularly sensitive to radiation. In the past, changes induced in this layer by irradiation have been referred to by non-specific terms such as "pyknotic cells" and the mode of cell death has been assumed to be necrosis. However, in published light micrographs of these dying cells, the appearance is suggestive of apoptosis, a distinctive mode of cell death which occurs spontaneously in normal adult and embryonic tissues and can also be triggered by certain pathological stimuli.
This light and transmission electron microscopic study of …
Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Early Atherosclerosis In Rabbits Using Aortic Casts, Ralph G. Kratky, Margot R. Roach
Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Early Atherosclerosis In Rabbits Using Aortic Casts, Ralph G. Kratky, Margot R. Roach
Scanning Microscopy
Our research involves measuring the size and location of atherosclerotic lesions on the intimal surface of arteries. To this end we have developed a new method in which scanning electron micrographs of vascular casts with impressions of these lesions on their surface are used. This method is compared with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of tissue with lesions. All three methods are found to detect lesions equally well. We also examine the cellular elements in the lesion to determine how the images are formed.

The effects on surface morphology of airway epithelium of cigarette smoke (CS) inhalation alone (experiments one and two) or of CS in combination with hypovitaminosis A (experiment two) was investigated using specific pathogen free rats. Eight morphologically distinct cell types were distinguished overall. Apart from atypical squamous lesions each of the other cell types could be found in varying proportions in all experimental groups. CS alone caused an increase in the frequency with which intra-lumenal mucus was seen and an increase in the occurrence of secretory cells of types IV (i.e.,'merocrine') and V (i.e.,'apocrine'). In experiment one, the area of …

The study presents preliminary qualitative findings of an investigation of grossly normal main and lobar bronchi at sites distant to well circumscribed tumour (n=15), adjacent to tumour (n=5) or of airways obtained during heart/lung transplantation in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF, n=3). In the normal airways the surface epithelium was on average 50 𝝁m thick, pseudostratified and rested on a roughly contoured basement membrane. A variety of cell types were identified although many were obscured by a dense covering of cilia, occasionally interrupted by foci of squamous metaplasia. Submucosal gland structure was observed in chance vertical fractures of the airway …
