Jack Milgrom: A Case Study, Riley Dechon Feb 2026

Jack Milgrom: A Case Study, Riley Dechon

SOURCE Explore Program

Jack Milgrom was a plastics researcher and consultant, publishing reports on the marketability of plastics, packaging, and recycling, several of which can be found in SU’s SCRC. Through Milgrom’s work, I ask how responsibility for plastic waste landed on the shoulders of consumers and not manufacturers during the peak of environmentalism. Milgrom’s reports offer a timeline as to how the plastics industry shifted its language and marketing methods to mirror the goals of environmentalism. By analyzing this shift against environmental writings of the time, which demonstrate an urgency to handle plastic waste, Milgrom reveals an awareness of what consumers want, …

Molding Childhood: Plastic’S Influence In Pediatric Care, Irene Zheng Feb 2026

Molding Childhood: Plastic’S Influence In Pediatric Care, Irene Zheng

SOURCE Explore Program

Plastics emerged after World War II as a material associated with progress, cleanliness, and possibility. In medicine, plastic replaced fragile glass tools and enabled inexpensive, standardized production of devices such as syringes and medicine dispensers. Yet the rise of pediatrics concerned itself with the emotional needs of children raises questions about whether this flexible material was used to create more child-friendly forms of care. Using materials from the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) Plastics Collection at Syracuse University Libraries, including a plastic liquid medicine dispenser (“Medi-Server”), archival advertisements for Plastipak, glass syringes, and historical patents for pediatric medicine devices and …

Interview No. 1823, Sylvia Torresdey Feb 2026

Interview No. 1823, Sylvia Torresdey

Combined Interviews

Sylvia Torresdey (Sylvia Chavira), born in 1955 at El Paso’s Hospital Dieu, grew up as one of six sisters in a family that maintained a vibrant transnational life. While her parents, Juanita Payán and Don Nasiano Chavira, established a residence in El Segundo Barrio to ensure their daughters could attend school in El Paso, the family maintained a home in Juárez’s Colonia del Carmen. Torresdey describes a childhood of constant movement across the border, crossing the bridge daily or weekly to bathe, collect clothes, and share weekend meals with her parents in Juárez. This bilingual upbringing involved speaking Spanish at …

The Justice Implications Of Public-School Discipline For African American Students In The Usa, Dr. Demeka Denay Simmons, Dr. Festus Obi Feb 2026

The Justice Implications Of Public-School Discipline For African American Students In The Usa, Dr. Demeka Denay Simmons, Dr. Festus Obi

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

National data illustrates that using exclusionary discipline practices has resulted in disproportionality and overrepresentation in school discipline. Additionally, research also illustrates that African Americans have been overrepresented in exclusionary discipline at higher rates than their White counterparts. This study aimed to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in the percentage of exclusionary discipline practices between African American and White students based on school district settings within Texas. The researchers analyzed archival data from 673 students in grades 3-12 enrolled in a Texas public school. The statistical tests used to analyze the research questions included Chi-Square and multinomial logistic …

Introduction: Rethinking Circulation In Italian Film And Media, Simone Brioni Dr., Rachel Johnson, Shelleen Greene Feb 2026

Introduction: Rethinking Circulation In Italian Film And Media, Simone Brioni Dr., Rachel Johnson, Shelleen Greene

Department of English Faculty Publications

This introduction to the special issue ‘Rethinking Circulation in

Italian Film and Media’ reconsiders how Italian audiovisual culture

moves across borders – industrially, geographically, linguistically,

and digitally. By focusing on the complex dynamics of circulation,

the essays gathered here trace the evolving connections between

production and distribution, exploring how contemporary modes

of localization, translation, and platform curation shape the

visibility and cultural capital of Italian cinema in global contexts.

From streaming giants such as Netflix to curated services like

MUBI, and from film festival circuits to independent film-making

networks, the issue interrogates how transnational infrastructures

of distribution redefine what counts …

Research on Capitol Hill

In 2025, Utah State held an exhibition celebrating 50 years of Undergraduate Research (UR) . As a freshman art history major, I was the lead student curator in charge of the exhibition. The overall story I wanted to highlight was how research is much more than STEM projects, and students across majors can conduct research on subjects they are passionate about.

A Free Black Farming Community In White Clay Creek Hundred, James Jones

History Faculty Publications

Although Delaware remained a slave state until the end of the Civil War, free Blacks were able to acquire land before that.  A small group settled along Delaware’s northern border with Chester County, even though Pennsylvania offered greater legal protection against enslavement.  This article describes what is known about the four families that settled along Hopkins Road in White Clay Creek Hundred, and the factors that affected their decision to remain in Delaware.

Exploring Two Approaches Towards Gender Inclusive Language In The Philippines, Eduardo Victor J. Valdez Feb 2026

Exploring Two Approaches Towards Gender Inclusive Language In The Philippines, Eduardo Victor J. Valdez

Marketing and Law Faculty Publications

In this paper, we shall take a look at the role of the Philippine government in encouraging the use of gender-neutral Philippine-English. We shall also glimpse at Philippine gayspeak as a player in the development of the Filipino language game. We endeavor to learn if a top to bottom program for language inclusivity from the government down to the citizenry is effective in promoting inclusivity in Philippine-English. On the other hand, a minority to majority development was the route that Philippine gayspeak took in adding their form of life into the gender-neutral Filipino language.

Winter Olympics 2026 Part Iv, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2026

Winter Olympics 2026 Part Iv, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The second week of Olympic competition began with the Pairs and the Women’s Figure Skating Events. In the past, these two events were the most anticipated events in the Winter Olympics. In recent years, the Pairs Event seems to have lost some of its luster, at least for me. It may have been eclipsed by Ice Dancing in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. In their free skate that year, Cristopher Dean and Jayne Torvill ice danced to Ravel’s Bolero and received a perfect score for artistic expression. It was a thing of beauty and took Ice Dancing to a …

Gendered Harms In Armed Conflict: International Legal Responses To The Gendered Effects Of The War In Sudan, Naima Dams Feb 2026

Gendered Harms In Armed Conflict: International Legal Responses To The Gendered Effects Of The War In Sudan, Naima Dams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis interrogates how international law conceptualizes, prosecutes, and ultimately limits the understanding of sexual violence in contexts of war and displacement. Drawing on feminist legal theory, postcolonial critique, and ethnographic fieldwork with Sudanese women displaced in Egypt, it questions the dominant legal framing of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) as episodic, exceptional, and individualized. Instead, it reveals sexual violence as structural, continuous, and embedded in the everyday realities of racialized, gendered, and colonial harm.

Through ethnographical narratives, the study exposes how survivors' experiences often exceed the legibility frameworks of humanitarian and legal institutions, which prioritize spectacular, forensic evidence over slow, …

The Contribution Of Local Wisdom In The Nagasasra Textbook As Support For The Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5), Nurhidayati Nurhidayati, Suwarna Suwarna, Sri Hertanti Wulan, Nujumun Niswah, Laura Zarbaliyeva

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The Merdeka Curriculum places strong emphasis on students' character development, which is operationalized through the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) comprising six core dimensions. As one of the primary curricular resources, textbooks are expected to reflect and mediate these character values in classroom learning. This study aims to examine the contribution of Javanese local wisdom represented in the Nagasasra textbook to supporting the implementation of P5. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this research adopts a document-based analysis of the Nagasasra Javanese language textbooks for grades X, XI, and XII. Data were collected using a read-and-record technique and analyzed through …

Making Sense Of And Responding To The Good And Bad Within Psychology: Common Grace And Antithesis As Tools For Psychology, Tyler Greenway, Cory B. Wilson Feb 2026

Making Sense Of And Responding To The Good And Bad Within Psychology: Common Grace And Antithesis As Tools For Psychology, Tyler Greenway, Cory B. Wilson

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

As psychologists and students of psychology make sense of and respond to the good and bad within human behavior and its study, theological tools benefit their discernment. This paper presents two Neocalvinist theological concepts — common grace and antithesis — as tools for psychologists. These concepts help psychologists recognize God’s common gifts to humanity while also identifying what must be corrected. Such applications benefit psychologists in clinical cases and as they consider theoretical frameworks. When used together, these tools encourage us to anticipate both the true, good, and beautiful things in the world and the need at times for redirection. …

Locke-Ing And Un-Locke-Ing The Declaration Of Independence: An Introduction To Jefferson’S Philosophy Of Revolution, Lynn Uzzell, T.C. Le, Julia Van Geest

Day of Scholarship

Locke-ing and Un-Locke-ing the Declaration of Independence is a book project completed by Politics Professor Lynn Uzzell and two of her former students; it was generously funded by Bethel University’s Edgren Grant for faculty-student collaboration. The book provides an introduction to Jefferson’s philosophy of revolution, with a special focus on its connections to Locke’s writing in his Second Treatise. Each chapter tackles just one line from the second paragraph of the Declaration. The book’s examination of 14 discrete claims within the Declaration, along with a deleted 15th section, demonstrates that the Declaration is heavily indebted to the Second Treatise but …
