Honing The Haptics Of The Heart: A New Defence Of The Perceptual Theory Of Emotion, Brandon Yip
Honing The Haptics Of The Heart: A New Defence Of The Perceptual Theory Of Emotion, Brandon Yip
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
According to the perceptual theory of emotion, emotions are evaluative perceptions. However, emotions involve us in a way that regular perception does not and this has led to two influential objections to the perceptual theory have emerged. According to the first objection, the perceptual theory is false because the phenomenology of emotion is the phenomenology of response. According to the second objection, the perceptual theory is false because emotions are susceptible to evaluations of rationality and reason-responsiveness. In this essay, I defend the perceptual theory by disarming these two objections. In response to the first objection, I suggest that emotional …

La Françafrique: À La Lumière Des Romans Et Films Francophones, Joseph Diémé
Trade & Scholarly Monographs

Math, And You! Math Tools Website For First-Grade Children With Instruction Provided Through Music Education, Tye Raymond
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores the conceptualization, exploration, and execution of a User Interface (UI) Design created as a supplemental mathematics education tool for grade one learners. Titled "Note Builder", this thesis project is a web design project, functioning as the prototype for a prospective website. Coding a website is a separate project; this project is comprised of the web design blueprint known as a prototype. The site uses a music-based digital reward system, which I constructed to motivate students as they explore new mathematics skills. All of the math questions used in this web design project are directly produced based on …

Women’S Agency And Pleasure (Wap): Toward A Black Feminist Theory Of Sexuality, Jelisa S. Clark, Erica Campbell
Women’S Agency And Pleasure (Wap): Toward A Black Feminist Theory Of Sexuality, Jelisa S. Clark, Erica Campbell
Journal of Research Initiatives
Black feminist theory has identified sexuality as a site of oppression for Black women, however, there has been limited attention to Black women’s pleasure. We suggest that WAP by Cardi B and Meg the Stallion provides a conceptual lens through which Black women's sexuality can be more humanely envisioned. WAP, in the tradition established by Black women in the blues, represents Black feminist theorizing about sexuality. Themes of Cultivating Community and Developing Voice through Self-Definition are central to discussions of Black women's pleasure. In this work, we bridge academic theorizing and Black women's cultural productions to reinvigorate Black feminist theorizing …
Female Figures In The Contemporary Moroccan Novel: Between Domination, Radicalization, And Emancipation, Younes Bel-Mkaddem
Female Figures In The Contemporary Moroccan Novel: Between Domination, Radicalization, And Emancipation, Younes Bel-Mkaddem
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This study offers a sociocritical analysis of female figures in the contemporary Moroccan novel, confronted with the pressures of patriarchy and radicalization. Drawing on the theories of Duchet, Zima, and Goldmann, alongside gender studies, the article examines how narrative devices—such as silence, fragmentation, and temporality—stage power dynamics. The analysis reveals a duality: ranging from the exposure of rigid structures of domination to the reclamation of the self through art and writing. Ultimately, the novel asserts itself as a space of symbolic resistance, capable of questioning social norms and outlining horizons for transformation.
On Some Temporal Values Of The Verb Kan (To Be) In Moroccan Arabic, Zahra Zaid
On Some Temporal Values Of The Verb Kan (To Be) In Moroccan Arabic, Zahra Zaid
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
The expression of tense is a universal characteristic of natural languages. Each one has a linguistic resource to locate the process on the tense axis in relation to the speaker's present or in relation to other processes. In this contribution, we propose, from the description of a corpus of simple verbal sentences, to identify some temporal values rendered by the verbal forms composed of the auxiliary kan (to be) and the verbal predicate in Moroccan Arabic (AM). The aim is to show that other categories can provide details on the functioning of temporality in Moroccan Arabic, such as the verb …
The Impact Of Linguistic Representations And French Language Skills On The Academic And Professional Trajectory Of Students At The Moroccan University: Case Of Students At The Faculty Of Sharia In Agadir, Ali Ennasiri
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This article focuses on the impact of linguistic representations and French language skills on the academic and professional trajectory of students at the Moroccan university. The objective is to study how these two variables appear, interact, and influence students’ academic and professional success. To do so, we rely on an analysis of the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among a sample of students from the Faculty of Sharia in Agadir, part of Ibn Zohr University. The results show that students’ linguistic representations of French often convey negative images and that their level of proficiency in the language generally remains …
The Effects Of Public Policy Territorialization On Human Development In Morocco: A Case Study Of The Indh In The Al Haouz Province, M’Hamed Ennosse, Zakaria Kadiri, Aziz Mechouat
The Effects Of Public Policy Territorialization On Human Development In Morocco: A Case Study Of The Indh In The Al Haouz Province, M’Hamed Ennosse, Zakaria Kadiri, Aziz Mechouat
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This research analyzes the impact of the territorialization of public policies in Morocco, focusing on INDH (National Initiative for Human Development) projects within the Al Haouz province. Utilizing a qualitative approach (interviews and field observations), the study evaluates the effectiveness of this mechanism in reducing local disparities. While the results indicate improved access to basic services, they also reveal major flaws: the capture of resources by local elites, the exclusion of vulnerable populations, and a lack of sustainability. The analysis highlights the ambivalent nature of this territorialization which, due to a lack of genuine participatory governance, struggles to reduce deep-seated …
The Framing Narrative And Mise En Abyme In Crebillon's Le Sopha: A Playful Subversion Of Narrative Codes, Abdou Ndiaye
The Framing Narrative And Mise En Abyme In Crebillon's Le Sopha: A Playful Subversion Of Narrative Codes, Abdou Ndiaye
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
The main objective of this article is to analyze how Le Sopha by Crébillon fils, through its complex narrative structure and mise en abyme, subverts the conventions of the 18th-century philosophical and libertine tale. By examining the role of the narrator, transformed into a sofa, and the use of the Oriental frame, this article seeks to understand how Crébillon fils invites the reader to critically reflect on morality, desire, and social conventions, while manipulating the audience’s expectations. We will also explore how the work employs irony, metanarratives, and ambiguous characters to engage the reader in an active reflection that goes …
Digital Practices Among Young Oasis Women: Tailor-Made Internet Connections, Douha Ejjaouani, Zakaria Kadiri
Digital Practices Among Young Oasis Women: Tailor-Made Internet Connections, Douha Ejjaouani, Zakaria Kadiri
Continuity And Change: Spaces Of Power, Narrative Discourses, And Territorial Challenges In Morocco, Nadia Kaaouas
Continuity And Change: Spaces Of Power, Narrative Discourses, And Territorial Challenges In Morocco, Nadia Kaaouas
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This volume explores the reconfigurations of social, narrative, and linguistic structures in Morocco and Africa through a multidisciplinary lens. By combining literary analysis (subversion of codes), development sociology (INDH), and gender studies (digital agency), the contributions decrypt the tension between institutional persistence and emancipatory praxis. Drawing on a rigorous qualitative methodology, this work examines the capacity of actors to reinvest in power spaces and vectors of symbolic capital.
Gender Inequalities In Morocco: Between Attempts At Destabilization And Patriarchal Continuity, Osire Glacier
Gender Inequalities In Morocco: Between Attempts At Destabilization And Patriarchal Continuity, Osire Glacier
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This text explores gender inequalities in Morocco by articulating patriarchal continuity and attempts at destabilization through gender studies. It takes as its starting point the pioneering initiative of Fatima Sadiqi, who founded the first women's research center (1996) and the first gender studies unit (2000) at the University of Fez. These structures aimed to introduce the concept of gender into the humanities and social sciences to deconstruct sociocultural obstacles to equality. Since then, the integration of similar programs in other universities has strengthened the visibility of these issues in higher education. Based on a discourse analysis of representations of women, …

Archives And Children's Knowledge, Elliott Kuecker, Ashley Rockenbach
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article argues for the importance of collecting works created by children—not just about and not just for—in formal archival collections. Framed through the ideas of legitimate knowledge and epistemic injustice, this piece combines notions important to children’s rights activists and childhood studies scholars with the role archives can play in preserving children’s knowledge through child-created materials. The authors describe how researchers struggle to find work created by children within archives, impacting the ability to create child-centered research that centers children’s views of the world as prominently as adult views of the world. Some collections that do include child-created materials …

Book Review: Sister Sinner By Claire Hoffman, Shawn Smith
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Claire Hoffman’s *Sister Sinner: The Miraculous Life and Mysterious Disappearance of Aimee Semple McPherson* (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2025) offers a very balanced and engaging look at one of the most influential yet controversial figures in early twentieth-century American Christianity. Blending meticulous scholarship with narrative flair, Hoffman explores McPherson’s rise from obscure evangelist to international celebrity, her pioneering use of radio, and her complex role in shaping Pentecostalism and popular culture. Avoiding sensationalism, Hoffman examines McPherson’s triumphs, contradictions, and mysterious disappearance with nuance and respect, resulting in a balanced yet compelling and well contextualized biography.

An Examination Of Civil War Memory: The Lost Cause, Taylor Hill
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
The way that Americans view the Civil War has changed over time. What was once considered a mighty conflict and a horrid defeat for the South has transformed into a distant, unpleasant memory. Different interpretations have struggled to understand why the war was fought and how it has been received.

Hiroshima And The Birth Of The Perilous Present, Scott M. White
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
This article explores how the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 not only marked a transformative moment in military and political history but also set a lasting precedent for modern global risk. By examining the implications of Hiroshima, this paper will delve into how the initial decision to use nuclear force instigated a high-stakes period of unprecedented risk management that extends to today's geopolitics, nuclear proliferation, and even international policy on climate and technology. This article will argue that the atomic history of Hiroshima established the world’s first encounter with existential weaponry and its accompanying ethical challenges, thereby laying the …

Lines In The Sky: American Air Defense Strategy 1950-1958, Jacob A. Battle
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
In August 1949, the Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb, abruptly ending the American monopoly on nuclear weapons. While many in the Truman administration had believed that no other nation could construct the bomb, war planners were now faced with the possibility of an "atomic Pearl Harbor". In response, NSC-68 would be published, granting an unprecedented level of attention and investment to developing air defense measures. Throughout the following decade, new command structures coincided with rapid developments in radar, aircraft, and missile technology. Furthermore, the development of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) integrated radar, interceptors, and Nike missile systems …
Cold War Origins: The Iron Curtain Descends, I. B. Landry
Cold War Origins: The Iron Curtain Descends, I. B. Landry
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
The West’s policy of containment would come to define the early years of the Cold War. Rooted in the communist takeover of Russia following the First World War, Soviet aggression was fostered under the leadership of Stalin, who envisioned global domination under communism. Thus, while tensions came to a head following World War II, evidence for an eventual clash of ideologies can be seen in its preceding years.
Fana’ (Annihilation), Houyar Moghaddas
Fana’ (Annihilation), Houyar Moghaddas
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
In Sufism, fana’ refers to the dissolution of the self, the annihilation of the ego as one transcends individuality. While traditionally a spiritual concept, fana’ also offers a powerful humanistic metaphor for psychological transformation. In both the poem and accompanying photograph, fana’ explores the themes of ego death, grief, and the reshaping of identity: processes central to psychiatric practice, psychedelic therapy and the treatment of emotional fragmentation. The photograph captures an individual standing at the edge of a path, facing an untamed landscape, symbolizing the confrontation with the unknown self and the internal experience of surrender. This work invites reflection …

Facing Dissection, Aya E. Cannon
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
The summer prior to beginning medical school, our anatomy professor prompted us to reflect on the experience of dissection and create an image based on our thoughts and feelings. I was thrilled by the assignment and immediately began listing my emotions. Excitement: For so long, I had worked toward this point, and now the quintessential medical school experience was within reach. I expressed my appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the human body through color and collage, using the vibrant layers to reflect the awe and range of emotions I felt. Nervousness: Despite my enthusiasm, I was faced with …

The Flexi Disc: A Brief History And Timeline Of The Making And Distribution, Jada Villaroel
SOURCE Explore Program
The Flexi Disc, popular between the 1960s and 1990s, was an innovative product which brought decades of cheap music distribution to the homes of many Americans. Within the Plastic Artifacts Collection at Syracuse University are several flexi discs used as advertising, ranging from current musical artists to large food chains preserved in mailing envelopes from several decades of the 1900's. Observing these artifacts provided data and information to answer the question: how were flexi discs able to be manufactured at such low costs while maintaining a profitable market? Multiple sources, including physical flexi discs and chat logs, from the Special …

Dolls of Our World is a geography game from around the 1950s in SCRC’s Plastics Artifacts Collection in which the player matches a doll to their flag based off outfit and short description. I wanted to know why Africa was not included, and overall, how geography games and teaching diversity have changed. I read several papers, including on plastic-color technology and the history of Black dolls. According to the categorization of “Gamification & Geography Education: A Survey & Typology of Games,” Dolls of Our World uses a storytelling narrative to teach, seen with the clothes and incorporation of people (however …
