Reassembling Documentary: From Actuality To Virtuality, Emine Selmin Kara Jan 2011

Reassembling Documentary: From Actuality To Virtuality, Emine Selmin Kara

Wayne State University Dissertations

At a period of intense technological change, which has led to an increasing degree of modularity in documentary media, "Reassembling Documentary: From Actuality to Virtuality" takes up episodic documentaries and non-fiction films broken into distinctly conceptualized parts, in order to examine how the evolution of technologies transform documentary film and media's relationship to the audiovisual archive across different historical periods. More specifically, the dissertation challenges the assumption that documentary film is essentially holistic in its discursive orientation and audiovisual aesthetics, by studying the fragmented works of a highly unique and international group of filmmakers, such as Harun Farocki, Werner Herzog, …

God's Glass Ceiling: Women's Education In Christian Fundamentalist Higher Education Institutions, Melissa Graves Jan 2011

God's Glass Ceiling: Women's Education In Christian Fundamentalist Higher Education Institutions, Melissa Graves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fundamentalists have historically held complex relationships with education and with women. This thesis examines the intersection of the three topics through a case study approach by looking at the education of women at fundamentalist institutions Bob Jones University, Liberty University, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Historically, fundamentalists have expressed great suspicion towards education and intellectualism. Fundamentalists insisted on a literal interpretation of the Bible. Moreover, they created fundamentalist universities and colleges so that parents could send their sons and daughters away to school without worrying that their children would abandon their faith. This thesis argues that fundamentalist schools approach the …

Commitment Beyond Morality: American Complicity In The Massacre At El Mozote, El Salvador, 1981, Dustin Hill Jan 2011

Commitment Beyond Morality: American Complicity In The Massacre At El Mozote, El Salvador, 1981, Dustin Hill

Online Theses and Dissertations

In order to highlight the complicity of the American government, this thesis will discuss in depth the most important massacre perpetrated by the Salvadoran military. While the American government maintained publicly that respect for human rights was one of the main goals of its mission in El Salvador, the six billion dollars of aid and American actions in the region belied another reality. This examination argues that it is clear that the massacre at El Mozote in late 1981 was the direct result of U.S. foreign policy initiatives. Although the Americans kept themselves insulated to provide for plausible deniability, the …

Corn And Culture: The Influence Of Zea Mays Across Cultural And Historical Boundaries, Ginny Marie Mueller Jan 2011

Corn And Culture: The Influence Of Zea Mays Across Cultural And Historical Boundaries, Ginny Marie Mueller

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Corn's status as a critical food crop, and its location within indigenous new world cosmographies, illustrate the important sociocultural role the plant has played for millennia. However, modern society has elevated Zea mays far above the status of mere plant, fashioning it into a commodity intimately connected to systems of control and capitalism. Consequently, corn has played an essential role in colonization, industrialization, and the advent of overproduction. The beliefs and literature of numerous new world cultures, along with the literatures of modern Western cultures, offer a striking analysis of corn's current position in western society. The far-reaching impacts that …

Mobile Warriors And Cosmopolitan Intellectuals: The Legacy Of The Dutch Counterinsurgency In Colonial Aceh, Andrew Goss Jan 2011

Mobile Warriors And Cosmopolitan Intellectuals: The Legacy Of The Dutch Counterinsurgency In Colonial Aceh, Andrew Goss

History Faculty Publications

Starting in the middle of the nineteenth century, the Netherlands East Indies sought to bring all the people and territory of the Indonesian archipelago under colonial control. In 1873, they turned their attention to the sultanate of Aceh in northern Sumatra, and sent a small invasion force. Their defeat led to 3000 mean being dispatched the following year, and while this force took control of the capital city of Banda Aceh and the lowlands near the coast, they were able to seize the city only after it had been abandoned by the Acehnese, who retreated into the mountainous regions to …

The Air Close To The Trees: Evolution And Innovation In U.S. Army Assault Helicopter Units During The Vietnam War, Adam Thomas Givens Jan 2011

The Air Close To The Trees: Evolution And Innovation In U.S. Army Assault Helicopter Units During The Vietnam War, Adam Thomas Givens

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Vietnam War the United States Army's use of assault helicopters was unprecedented in modern warfare. Although planners originally anticipated their utilization on a European battlefield rather than against an insurgency, Army Aviation adapted, allowing them to overcome an uncertain future. Due to the unconventional nature of the conflict, continual revisions in tactics, techniques, and procedures ensured that assault helicopter doctrine was never concrete, but always shifting. Multiple factors influenced these developments, and manifold channels of dissemination allowed combat knowledge ultimately to influence training and doctrine. This thesis finds that previous works focus too heavily upon the initial large-scale …

Museums And Restitution: The Actions And Effects Of Dr. Zahi Hawass, Bonnie Jean Roche Jan 2011

Museums And Restitution: The Actions And Effects Of Dr. Zahi Hawass, Bonnie Jean Roche

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The topic of restitution, returning cultural objects to a museum in a country of origin, has produced a complicated debate. The factors concerning restitution are political, ethical, and emotionally charged. Leading this controversy is Dr. Zahi Hawass. He is concerned with both the return of artifacts and the protection of artifacts in Egypt. Hawass has developed a 'wish list' for the return of Egyptian artifacts from market nations. The museums currently housing the items feel they serve the purpose of allowing a global audience to view these artifacts. Hawass has made tremendous strides in retrieving other antiquities and making discoveries …

Postmodernidad Y Metaficción En Hipótesis (1975), Iker González-Allende Jan 2011

Postmodernidad Y Metaficción En Hipótesis (1975), Iker González-Allende

United We Sing: Union Hymnals, Holiness Hymnody, And The Formation Of Korean Revivalism (1905-2007), William T. Purinton Jan 2011

United We Sing: Union Hymnals, Holiness Hymnody, And The Formation Of Korean Revivalism (1905-2007), William T. Purinton

The Asbury Journal

The history of Christianity long has recognized the transatlantic revival connections in both the First and Second Awakenings, with preaching being noted as the primary means of communicating the revival message. During the past century, transpacific revivalism has become a significant part of the world history of Christianity. In Korean Protestantism, revivalism has been rooted within the majority religious experience, with hymns and gospel songs as an important medium. "While North American denominations have used separate hymnals and have tended to exclude revival hymns from their selections, Korean Protestants have used the same hymnal from the beginning and have retained …

Decapitating Power, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2011

Decapitating Power, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In “Society Must Be Defended” Foucault examines 17th century race war discourse not so much in order to understand 20th century racism or concepts of race but primarily because it constitutes an historical example of an attempt to think power without a head or king. This essay examines his account of race war discourse and the sources he used to construct it. It then takes issue with his claim that early race war discourse can be separated from 18th and 19th century racisms. Finally, it returns to the question of power and argues that the effect of the 1976 lecture …

Review Of Beyond Liberal Democracy, Sor-Hoon Tan Jan 2011

Review Of Beyond Liberal Democracy, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Beginning with an account of Ronald Dworkin’s two-week visit toChina in 2002 as an example of how “uniquely parochial” post–WorldWar II Western liberal democratic theory and theorists have been,Daniel A. Bell proceeds to examine how theories of human rights, democracy, and capitalism (“main hallmarks of liberal democracy”)have become substantially modified when transmitted to East Asiansocieties. Bell brings a wealth of interesting material to support hisargument that “[w]hat is right for East Asians does not simply involveimplementing Western-style political practices when the opportunitypresents itself; it involves drawing upon East Asian political realitiesand cultural traditions that are defensible to contemporary EastAsians” (p. 8). …

Violence, Christianity, And The Anglo-Saxon Charms, Laurajan G. Gallardo Jan 2011

Violence, Christianity, And The Anglo-Saxon Charms, Laurajan G. Gallardo

Masters Theses

Concentration in Literary Studies

The thesis focuses on violence reinterpreted through the Anglo-Saxon charms that exhibit a fusion of Christian and pagan elements. In order to comprehend the impact of this fusion, I provide ecclesiastical and social histories of the Anglo-Saxons, stressing upon the interconnectedness of both-an essential concept in understanding the AngloSaxon view of the world. This interconnectedness is seen in the Anglo-Saxon perception of magic, which in their understanding was synonymous to science or religion. I provide a brief introduction on magical practices and beliefs that applied to the charms, shedding light on how they were expected to …

Innovation On A Budget The Development Of Military Technology During The Interwar Period, 1919-1939, William Erik Deupree Jan 2011

Innovation On A Budget The Development Of Military Technology During The Interwar Period, 1919-1939, William Erik Deupree

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the progress of technological development during the interwar period of 1919 to 1939. The interwar period was a time of slashed military budgets and isolationist policies. However, despite political, financial, and organizational handicaps, each branch of the military made significant progress in the development of military technology, and the air corps and navy achieved significantly better results. The reason these two branches were able succeed was through a combination of organizational policy and the development of an overarching goal for their respective branch. Within this thesis, I investigated each of the major military branches during the interwar …

"Army Of One" To "Army Strong" : Visual Media And U.S. Army Recruitment During Bush"S "War On Terror", Shawn Paul Apostel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

From Bush’s September 20, 2001 “War on Terror” speech to Congress to President-Elect Barack Obama’s acceptance speech on November 4, 2008, the U.S. Army produced visual recruitment material that addressed the concerns of falling enlistment numbers—due to the prolonged and difficult war in Iraq—with quickly-evolving and compelling rhetorical appeals: from the introduction of an “Army of One” (2001) to “Army Strong” (2006); from messages focused on education and individual identity to high-energy adventure and simulated combat scenarios, distributed through everything from printed posters and music videos to first-person tactical-shooter video games. These highly polished, professional visual appeals introduced to the …

Jonathan Edwards's Metaphors Of Sin In Indian Country, Joy A. J. Howard Jan 2011

Jonathan Edwards's Metaphors Of Sin In Indian Country, Joy A. J. Howard

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

T he move to Indian country was an uncommon one for a preacher of Jonathan Edwards's status and age, but the seven years he lived in Stockbridge preaching to Mohawks, Mahicans, and colonial settlers proved to be some of the most fruitful of his career. Jonathan Edwards accepted the position in Stockbridge after his Northampton congregation voted to dismiss him in 1750 and, after visiting the mission town multiple times, he was officially installed as pastor in August of 1751. Edwards valued Protestant mission imperatives, and although the pastorate was remote and he faced a significant language barrier between him …

Introduction To Confronting The Climate Crisis: Catholic Theological Perspectives, Jame Schaefer Jan 2011

Introduction To Confronting The Climate Crisis: Catholic Theological Perspectives, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Confronting the Climate Crisis: Catholic Theological Perspectives is the culmination of a three-year study by participants in the Catholic Theology and Global Warming Interest Group of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA). This interest group was established in 2008 when several members of the CTSA shared a desire to respond theologically to the complex and vexing problem of global climate change. Some had already been addressing environmental issues from the perspectives of the various sub-disciplines of theology in which we have been trained (e.g., biblical, historical, systematics, ethics) because inherent in our vocation as theologians is a calling by …

Contracts, Consent, And Fate: Framing The Chinese Civil Service Examinations As Mechanisms Of Social Conditioning And Political Domination, Forrest Cale Mcsweeney Jan 2011

Contracts, Consent, And Fate: Framing The Chinese Civil Service Examinations As Mechanisms Of Social Conditioning And Political Domination, Forrest Cale Mcsweeney

All ETDs from UAB

Though the form of civil service examinations in pre-modern Imperial China was dynamic, their function was comparatively static. In every era, they were principally an institution designed to either assist or outright effect the creation of an economy of social hierarchy designed to ensure social an economic domination. This function changed only with respect to what kind of hierarchy was to be created: either aristocratic, gentry, or just as often ethnic. The exams' evolution culminated in an era of understood autocracy after the Song characterized by the state's structure as one ultimately tailored to enable the despotic rule of one …

This work is an intellectual history focussing on the ideas surrounding the implimentaiton of democratic systems in Africa, and specifically Kenya, at the end of the cold war. The work begins with an examination of the attitudes toward democracy in Africa as expressed at the U.S. congressional hearings on aid to Africa in 1991, and ends with an afterward looking at the …
