The Nation And Its Heretics: ‘Muslim Citizenship’, State Power And Minority Rights In Pakistan, Sadia Saeed Jan 2011

The Nation And Its Heretics: ‘Muslim Citizenship’, State Power And Minority Rights In Pakistan, Sadia Saeed

Studio for Law and Culture

In 1984, Pakistan’s military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq passed an executive Ordinance that made it a criminal offence for members of the heterodox Ahmadiyya community, a self-defined minority sect of Islam, to refer to themselves as Muslims and practice Islam in public. Ahmadis challenged the 1984 Ordinance in both the Supreme Court and the Federal Shariat Court in Pakistan – in the former on that grounds that the Ordinance violated their constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion and in the latter on the grounds that it violated shari’a. In a clear departure from the Pakistani courts’ earlier rulings on the …

Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling Jan 2011

Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling

Student Works

This paper draws upon Egyptian documentary papyri in order to show more fully the quantitative purchasing power of items of economic significance in Luke 15. Specifically, the stories of the lost drachma, lost sheep, and prodigal son each mention economic items which—when compared with the papyrological data—can more fully elucidate areas of economic import which have not been looked at before. In doing so, the article builds upon, and supports, the framework of Roman economic "middling groups" as posited by Longenecker (2009). Furthermore, a close look at Luke 15 when compared with the Egyptian papyrological data suggests the possibility of …

Well I'Ll Be: Positive Images Of Southern Women As Response To Feminism From 1980-2000, Jennifer Holman Gunter Jan 2011

Well I'Ll Be: Positive Images Of Southern Women As Response To Feminism From 1980-2000, Jennifer Holman Gunter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the role images of southern women play in understanding the feminist movement from 1980 to 2000. By closely analyzing several media forms, from television to self-help books, it becomes apparent that the function of the southern woman is often to either soften the blow of feminism or push the agenda of patriarchy. I look thoroughly at movies and television of the 1980s as well as books and societal groups of the 1990s. The time period involved in this study encompasses the backlash to the second wave of feminism through the emergence of the third wave. The data …

The Lady Of The Lake And Chivalry In The Lancelot-Grail Cycle And Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, Amanda Marie Ewoldt Jan 2011

The Lady Of The Lake And Chivalry In The Lancelot-Grail Cycle And Thomas Malory's Morte Darthur, Amanda Marie Ewoldt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Lady of the Lake as an active chivalric player in the thirteenth century Lancelot-Grail Cycle (also known as the Prose Lancelot) and in Thomas Malory's fifteenth-century Le Morte Darthur. To study the many codes of chivalry, particularly in regard to women, I use two popular chivalric handbooks from the Middle Ages: Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood and Chivalry, Geoffroi de Charny'sKnight's Own Book of Chivalry. Traditionally, the roles of women in medieval chivalry are passive, and female characters are depicted as objects to win or to inspire knights to greatness. The Lady of the Lake, I …

The Clinton Years: Assessing Success In The Bosnian Genocide Intervention, Natalie Pierce Jan 2011

The Clinton Years: Assessing Success In The Bosnian Genocide Intervention, Natalie Pierce

Global Tides

This paper seeks to argue that President Bill Clinton’s intervention in the Bosnian genocide was successful. In order to define success, the author compiles a list of Clinton’s explicitly stated goals for the region. The author explores Clinton’s campaign promises on Bosnia, which he expressed in public statements and the first presidential debate against the current President, George H.W. Bush, and demonstrates how the Bosnian initiatives were slightly altered after Clinton took office. The author uses a variety of sources including newspaper articles, speech and debate transcripts, and secondary sources to construct Clinton’s concrete objections. Through a chronological assessment of …

THE MEXICAN HYDRA: HOW CALDERÓN’S PURSUIT OF PEACE LED TO THE BLOODIEST WAR IN MEXICAN HISTORY. WILL THE MEXICAN PEOPLE INHERIT A FAILED STATE IN 2012?

Abstract

Marco Antonio Pinon-Farah

The drug-war in Mexico (2006-present) has accelerated at a chilling rate, claiming the lives of 35,000 Mexican people. Since President Felipe Calderón assumed office, Mexico has been battling an internal beast unlike any it has known, the Mexican Hydra. Like the mythical creature, the Mexican cartels have proven capable of not only combating the government forces, but also of regenerating and strengthening themselves in the face of increasing government scrutiny …

Fear And Loathing In Los Angeles: Industrial Decentralization And The Rise And Fall Of L.A.'S Periphery, Alexander Bargmann

CMC Senior Theses

During the 1920s, Los Angeles Boosters, fearing the congestion of East coast cities, developed ideas about urban growth that emphasized industrial decentralization and urban dispersal.  Before, during, and after WWII, these fears intertwined with the rise of defense related industries, particularly aviation and steel.  As the city continued to grow, becoming a regional metropolis, these defense related industries, long present in Los Angeles, were brought into peripheral hubs by local boosters looking to develop places like Palmdale and Fontana.  These cities grew and became, as important manufacturing and defense centers, part of the larger regional economy.  These forces and boosters were …

Siegfried Sassoon And Rebecca West: A Dual-Commentary On The English Home Front In World War I, Joseph Farewell Jan 2011

Siegfried Sassoon And Rebecca West: A Dual-Commentary On The English Home Front In World War I, Joseph Farewell

CMC Senior Theses

The glory of war is dead, and the Great War killed it. Soldierly dignity, heroism, and proper field chivalry; all laid to waste by a single mortar round at Arras. This ethos—a vestige of Greek warrior worship—stood little chance against the trenches. It either drowned in the fecal trench muck at the Somme or staggered back—in tatters, if that—a broken soul; another victim of the so-called “Good Fight.” And there were many victims. An entire generation, even, lost to the trenches. But that’s not even the worst part. The worst part is that home front in England didn’t even get …

A Transnational Faith: El Salvador And Immigrant Christianity, Robert A. Danielson Jan 2011

A Transnational Faith: El Salvador And Immigrant Christianity, Robert A. Danielson

The Asbury Journal

Immigration is radically shaping the makeup of the United States; however immigration today is radically different than in previous generations. Modern immigration is characterized by transnationalism, where more immigrants are maintaining connections with their homelands. These connections have both positive and negative impacts on both the United States and the immigrant's countries of origin. El Salvador is one example of this trend. Financial remittances and gangs are representative of the way transnational migration affects a country of origin, like El Salvador, as well as the United States. The Church needs to adapt to this global trend and recognize its impact …

The Gendered Plight Of Terror: Annexation And Exile In Latvia 1940-1950, Irene Elksnis Geisler Jan 2011

The Gendered Plight Of Terror: Annexation And Exile In Latvia 1940-1950, Irene Elksnis Geisler

Dissertations

Drawing on methodologies employed in Oral History and Memory scholarship, this qualitative study utilizes the lens of gender to explore narratives contesting time-honored notions of violence, war and peace. It examines Latvia's history through the voices of women from 1940 to 1950. This project seeks to interpret Latvian history based on the experiences of those who survived invasion, exile and deportation. It positions the narratives of women at the center rather than at the margins of historical analysis. The project analyzes themes central to women's social roles in order to attain a more complete understanding of war, exile and people's …

Transatlantic Baggage: Expatriate Paris, Modernism, And The Apprenticeship Of Ernest Hemingway, Patrick Blair Bonds Jan 2011

Transatlantic Baggage: Expatriate Paris, Modernism, And The Apprenticeship Of Ernest Hemingway, Patrick Blair Bonds

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

“Transatlantic Baggage: Expatriate Paris, Modernism, and the Apprenticeship of Ernest Hemingway” argues that Hemingway’s expatriation and apprenticeship in modernist Paris from 1921-1925 provided an important impetus for his explorations in gender alterity. The project focuses on a critical-biographical rethinking of Hemingway’s literary development, integrating previous Hemingway biography and gender studies scholarship with new revelations from the manuscript of the forthcoming first two volumes of the Cambridge Edition of the Letters of Ernest Hemingway. An updated study of the author’s literary formation is long overdue; Charles Fenton’s The Apprenticeship of Ernest Hemingway: The Early Years (1954), for example, has served for …

From Native To Nation: Copway’S American Indian Newspaper And Formation Of American Nationalism, David Shane Wallace Jan 2011

From Native To Nation: Copway’S American Indian Newspaper And Formation Of American Nationalism, David Shane Wallace

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the publication of Copway’s American Indian (1851) challenges accepted representations of nineteenth-century American Native peoples by countering popular stereotypes. Interrogating a multiplicity of cultural artifacts at the moment of their meeting and investigating the friction created as they rub against one another within the columns of the periodical, I argue that the texts that contribute to the make-up of Copway’s American Indian are juxtaposed in such a way as to force nineteenth-century readers to reconsider the place of the indigenous inhabitants in the American nation. Seemingly disconnected tidbits of information, presented not individually but as components …

“Because We Were Japanese Soldiers": The Failure Of Japanese Tactics At Changkufeng And Nomonhan And Lessons Left Unlearned, Ryan Schultz Jan 2011

“Because We Were Japanese Soldiers": The Failure Of Japanese Tactics At Changkufeng And Nomonhan And Lessons Left Unlearned, Ryan Schultz

Honors Papers

In their conflicts with the Soviet Union in 1938-1939, Imperial Japanese Army forces suffered a series of dramatic defeats at the hands of the Red Army, the descendant of an enemy they had been preparing to face since the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War. At the root of these military failures was the dramatic tactical insufficiency of Japanese army doctrine, which had not evolved to meet the combined arms threat of a modern opponent. Instead, relying on 'spiritual superiority' over firepower, they were forced to attack Soviet tanks with firebombs and operate continuously under the heavy fire of enemy artillery. …

Dow Chemical Vs. ‘Coercive Utopians’: Constructing The Contested Ground Of Science And Government Regulation In 1970s America, Amy M. Hay Jan 2011

Dow Chemical Vs. ‘Coercive Utopians’: Constructing The Contested Ground Of Science And Government Regulation In 1970s America, Amy M. Hay

History Faculty Publications

In 1979, the Dow Chemical Company published an excerpt from a speech by H. Peter Metzger that announced an emerging conflict in American ideals and public policy. He stated that a new kind of individual inhabited Washington, people from the counterculture who were “coercive utopians” because they sought to achieve their agenda through covert actions and hoped to end the American free market economy. Following the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the subsequent banning of DDT in 1972, Dow and other chemical manufacturers fought to keep the regulatory climate favorable to industry. Dow found itself defending the …

Healing Through Belief, Biography, And Social Connection, Anomie Jan 2011

Healing Through Belief, Biography, And Social Connection, Anomie

Research outputs 2011

A dirt road arcs upward over rising ground. As the road forks, a woman walking the road is confronted with a choice: to the left, a narrow path is flanked by two men each standing on a gold rug, and to the right a wide road continues up a hill. Beyond the men, obscuring the path, is a thicket of thorns. There is a way through the thorns, but it is small. Looking back, the woman sees only a few people on the road. The woman chooses to take the wide road to the right, but on walking the road, …

An Ethical History Of Photography In Combat And Of Combat Photography In The United States During World War Ii, Molly Shoener Jan 2011

An Ethical History Of Photography In Combat And Of Combat Photography In The United States During World War Ii, Molly Shoener

Honors Theses

With the United States‘ entry into the Second World War, the word ?censorship? was seen largely as antithetical to, rather than a necessary counterpart to, victory among Americans. People did not want to be censored in their writing, photographs or speech, but it proved to be necessary even before the war began, in order to protect government secrets and the people on the home-front from scenes that were too disturbing. Even before the war had officially begun, there were problems with censorship among journalists and newspapers. The initial response of outrage in reference to censorship in the United States was common …

A Model For Enhanced Nurture Of New Believers In The Reang Tribe In India, Lalmuansanga Chawngthu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Reang tribal people live in Tripura State, Northeast India. The Reang are largely illiterate and most live in poverty. Sicknesses and starvation are common among this tribal group. Although Adventists and other Christian groups have had reasonable success evangelizing the Reang, many converts appear to become Christians in search of the material aid they need. The Seventh-day Adventist Church needs a systematic and comprehensive plan of spiritual nurture for its Reang converts that will lead them into mature discipleship.

Method

This study begins by developing a theological foundation for spiritual nurture based on selected biblical passages and the …
