James Chandler in England in 1819: the Politics Of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism says that the second-generation Romantic writers were in essence historicist. According to Chandler, the literary work of England in 1819 is concerned with its own historical self-representation. Romantic writers can be regarded as fashioning the history by which they must be understood. Chandler regards Romanticism as a crucial period because despite the relatively short span of years to which it is usually assigned (1790-1830), close attention has been paid to its literary activity (3). Chandler's concern is "with writings that seek to state …

"100 Spears Worth 100 Pieces": The Impact Of Ashigaru On Sengoku Jidai, Austin W. Clark
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
In the year 1545, during the latter half of Japan‘s Sengoku Period or ―Age of Warring States‖, the minor samurai Ukida Naoie was assigned thirty men and a small fief in the province of Bizen. His task was to cultivate and defend this small corner of the province from the ambitious and power-hungry lords and bandits that abounded in the Sengoku Period, but Naoie set his sights higher. Given direct control over his thirty men, a mere garrison force of infantry, he used them to conquer and rule over neighboring fiefs in the province. His reputation and his army grew …
Sahib And Sepoy : The British Perspective On The Sepoy Rebellion Of 1857, Harley Derek Walden
Sahib And Sepoy : The British Perspective On The Sepoy Rebellion Of 1857, Harley Derek Walden
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 was a truly significant event in the annals of British history and imperial study as well. The recent historiography on the British perspective of the event neglects to consider the positive Anglo-Indian perspective, dismissing it as a dissident or non-existent sentiment. However, through analyzing the British Parliamentary debates, military memoir, and Victorian literature, a more dynamic picture emerges of mid-Victorian Britain. Britons from varying social classes felt sympathy and admiration for their Indian counterparts, even in lieu of the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857. They differentiated between loyal Indian soldiers and the rebels that threatened to …

A Poet's Request : Text And Subtext In Horace's Odes 1.1, Virginia C. Cook
A Poet's Request : Text And Subtext In Horace's Odes 1.1, Virginia C. Cook
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
As the first poem within Horace's original publication of Odes, Odes 1.1 embodies aspects of theme and style representative of the poet's approach to the genre of lyric poetry. The Odes of Horace allow various interpretations by the reader based on construction, vocabulary and imagery. This thesis explores Odes 1.1 in its entirety through such approaches and focuses on the text and subtext incorporated by the poet. The first chapter sets the foundation needed in order to begin a study of Horace's lyric poetry, detailing the genre as a whole, the life of the poet, as well as the contradiction …

"The Universal Alliance Of All Peoples": Romantic Socialists, The Human Family, And The Defense Of Empire During The July Monarchy, 1830-1848, Naomi J. Andrews
History
This article documents the procolonial rhetoric among romantic socialists in France during the July Monarchy (1830-48), demonstrating its pervasiveness. It argues that these years must be highlighted as key to the transition from eighteenth-century universalist ideas of humanity toward taxonomies of national, racial, and sexual difference that underpinned the rationale of empire in the second half of the nineteenth century. It explores the views on colonialism espoused by socialists such as Etienne Cabet, Pierre Leroux, Constantin Pecqueur, and Jean Reynaud; situates them in the broad socialist consensus on empire; and demonstrates the relationship between these men's socialism and their colonialism. …
Book Review: Mao Zedong And China In The Twentieth-Century World, Jeremy Tai
Book Review: Mao Zedong And China In The Twentieth-Century World, Jeremy Tai
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Mao Zedong may no longer be the sublime object of desire in China, but in recent decades his image has been continuously invoked and consumed in countless guises – both familiar and new – ranging from pop art portraits to the ubiquitous face of Chinese banknotes, from Cultural Revolution kitsch to the ObaMao souvenirs currently found in tourist traps around China. The reproduction of Mao in his various postmodern manifestations suggests a loss of meaning and depoliticization; at the same time, however, the deep-seated clash between sentimental and polemical cultural representations also makes clear that there is still much at …
Security Now: Addressing The Needs Of Darfur’S Children, Nicole Judd
Security Now: Addressing The Needs Of Darfur’S Children, Nicole Judd
Human Rights & Human Welfare
In the Darfur region of Sudan, over 2.3 million children have been affected by the ongoing genocide (UNICEF 2008). Unlike their adult counterparts, children are impacted more severely by the consequences of warfare as they are undergoing a fragile developmental process. While each one of the affected children has had their basic human rights violated in some form, the narrative of trauma differs between groups. Sexually-exploited girls, boy soldiers, unaccompanied children, and those who remain in under-resourced camps have experienced the protracted violence in unique ways. To mitigate the effects of war, each group should receive individualized humanitarian assistance as …

The Ancient City Occupied St. Augustine As A Test Case For Stephen Ash's Civil War Occupation Model, Eric Paul Totten
The Ancient City Occupied St. Augustine As A Test Case For Stephen Ash's Civil War Occupation Model, Eric Paul Totten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis intends to prove that Stephen V. Ash’s model of occupation from his work, When the Yankees Came: Conflict and Chaos in the Occupied South, is applicable to St. Augustine’s occupation experience in the Civil War. Three overarching themes in Ash’s work are consistent with Civil War St. Augustine. First, that Union policy of conciliation towards southern civilians was abandoned after the first few months of occupation due to both nonviolent and violent resistance from those civilians. Second, that Ash’s “zones of occupation” of the occupied South, being garrisoned towns, no-man’s-land, and the Confederate frontier apply to St. Augustine …
The Whiteman's Seminole White Manhood, Indians And Slaves, And The Second Seminole War, Francis Mahan Iv
The Whiteman's Seminole White Manhood, Indians And Slaves, And The Second Seminole War, Francis Mahan Iv
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study demonstrates that both government officials‟ and the settlers‟ perceptions of the Seminoles and Black Seminoles in Florida were highly influenced by their paternalistic and Jeffersonian world views. These perceptions also informed their policies concerning the Seminoles and Black Seminoles. The study is separated into three sections. The first chapter covers the years of 1820-1823. This section argues that until 1823, most settlers and government officials viewed the Seminoles as noble savages that were dependent on the U.S. Furthermore, most of these individuals saw the Black Seminoles as being secure among the Seminole Indians and as no threat to …
Missiological Imagination As A Pedagogical Tool: African And Asian Christians In Conversion, Benjamin Hartley
Missiological Imagination As A Pedagogical Tool: African And Asian Christians In Conversion, Benjamin Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
This article provides an example of how mission history may be utilized in imaginative ways to promote student reflection about missiology. The article first presents biographical portraits of three Christian leaders from Africa and Asia in the late eighteenth century with respect to three missiological themes (migration, empire, and theology of evangelism). The second section of the essay is a fictitious and imaginative conversation among these three historical characters and me, the author, where questions are posed concerning these same themes. The article concludes with pedagogical reflections on the use of a similar exercise with students.
The Current Ethiopian Experience, Sahai Redleaf
The Current Ethiopian Experience, Sahai Redleaf
Whittier Scholars Program
The objective of this project is to understand the causes of growth and development (or lack thereof) that influence nations by examining Ethiopia’s economy and the political dynamics. In this research, Ethiopia’s history highlights major factors that influence tyrannical patterns within political parties, especially within the last few decades. Utilizing an economic approach, the project examined Ethiopia’s growth performance from 1989 to 2007. The Penn World Tables are the primary source of the data used to analyze figures of GDP per capita, adjusted by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). This allows for prices to be adjusted so that a product in …

We The Peoples Of The United States Of America: Constituting American Identities Through Pluralism And Narrative, Michael .. Yohai
Honors Theses
W. E. B. DuBois writes in his 1897 essay, “The Conservation of Races,” that every black person living in America must, sooner or later, ask herself the following question: “What , after all, am I? Am I an American or am I a Negro? Can I be both? Or is it my duty to cease to be a Negro as soon as possible and be an American?”1 DuBois’ question, “Can I be both?” still lingers for blacks and other non‐white groups in America. However, the racial demographic reality of the America is changing and with it, the connotations of the …

Cultures are built upon myths that reinforce and glorify the way citizens wish to view themselves as part of a larger, stronger whole. These myths are central to the strength of a culture due to the shared sense of greatness, responsibility, and cohesion mutual belief instills. Globally, examples of cultural myth include French elegance, Arabic divine religious sanction, and British diplomatic proficiency. Specifically American mythology includes the pioneer mentality, equality for all citizens, and global caretaker. These myths, as with those of other countries, were born of historic actuality or ideology. The basis for each of these American myths, however, …

Osler And The Infected Letter: A History Of Disinfecting Mail With Special Reference To Smallpox, Charles T. Ambrose
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
In January 1876 William Osler, a young Canadian physician, was recovering from a mild case of smallpox contracted while attending patients at the Montreal General Hospital (Figure 1). In a letter written that same month to an old schoolmate (ArthurJarvis), Osier described his illness and noted in closing, "You need not be afraid of this letter. I will disinfect it before sending." Concern about disseminating smallpox via the letter was well founded. In his medical textbook of 1892, Osler would later write that smallpox can be conveyed by fomites: "the dried scales [of variola scabs] ... as a dust-like powder …

Atoms For Peace, Us Foreign Policy And The Globalization Of Nuclear Technology, 1953-1960, Mara Drogan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation analyzes the bilateral agreements for cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy enacted under President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace program from 1953 to 1960. It challenges previous representations of Atoms for Peace that depict it as a legitimate attempt at arms control or dismiss it as a mere propaganda campaign. Atoms for Peace was not intended to be a disarmament measure. Instead, it united nuclear, economic, and foreign policy objectives in a synergistic program intended to fulfill a number of postwar aims: blunting nuclear fears in order to quiet criticisms of the American nuclear project, supporting postwar …
Child Soldiers, Armed Conflicts, And Tactical Innovations, Robert Tynes
Child Soldiers, Armed Conflicts, And Tactical Innovations, Robert Tynes
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Most armed conflicts in the late 20th and early 21st century involve the use of child soldiers. Children have been used in wars before the modern era, but this study argues that a shift has occurred in contemporary conflicts. Child soldier use has become a tactical innovation. Fighting factions utilize children as soldiers in order to gain an advantage on the battlefield. Several different analytical approaches are used in order to test the argument. First, a large-N regression analysis (1987-2007) reveals that depending on the dyadic relationship between government and opposition forces, intensity of war, military expenditures per GDP, political …

Isaac V. Elizabeth Gouverneur : Sex, Sensibility, And The Creation Of New York's 1787 Divorce Law, Michelle Dorothy Duross
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Isaac v. Elizabeth Gouverneur: Sex, Sensibility, and the Creation of New York's 1787 Divorce Law combines legal and cultural history to illuminate the beginning of judicial divorce in New York State, analyzing the creation of New York’s 1787 divorce law within a prism not previously used in studies relating to early New York divorce. Prior scholarship has either denied the existence of the 1787 law or concentrated on nineteenth-century rulings to conclude that alimony was always dependent on a wife’s innocence. Chancery Court records from 1787 to 1814, however, show that guilty wives were granted alimony, illustrating a significant change …

Poison In The System : Symbols On The Body And The Body As A Symbol In Select Works Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Kathleen Mary Crouse
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In three texts by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Birth-Mark," "Rappaccini's Daughter," and The Scarlet Letter, the main female characters share one central trait: a problematic femininity that causes the men in their lives to regard them as something other, and thus suspect. Hawthorne develops this idea of femininity as a defect, and endows these women with actual bodily anomalies in order to explore the ways in which the symbols on the body, or the body itself, invite a variety of interpretation. In doing so, he shows that these interpretations reveal as much or more about the interpreter as they do the …

The Dark Side Of Liberation: When Historical Movements For Change Go Wrong, Daniel E. Schafer
Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal
The written and spoken word can do a great many things in the cause of liberation. Words can help people figure out their own situation and develop ways to cope and to improve their lives. One can learn to “speak truth to power,” as they say, it being a very powerful thing to point out injustices and hypocrisy. Words can motivate others to participate in a movement to help one another and make the world a better place. When the liberating voices come together into a chorus and form a movement – let’s call it a liberation movement – we …

The Gay Of The Land: Queer Ecology And The Literature Of The 1960s, Jill Elizabeth Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation I argue not only that queer ecology is a legitimate and important next step for ecocritics and queer theorists but also that its literary application does a great amount of good in exploring and dismantling the natural/unnatural binary and exposing the ecological impact of the choices humans make everyday. I take as my method a combination of queer and environmental theory and literary criticism, as well as the foundational queer ecocritical works and include important historical and political perspectives influencing the emergence of the environmental and gay and lesbian movements. Through this dissertation, I legitimize more recent …

‘The Monstrous Anger Of The Guns’: Critical Commentary On The War Poems Of Gabriel Okara, Chukwuma Azuonye
Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series
Throughout the Biafran War of Independence from Nigeria (1967-1970), Gabriel Okara remained a committed Biafran. But he was neither an iconoclastic secessionist (determined to wantonly wreck any well-founded order, including the subaltern state of Nigeria) nor a romantic revolutionary (dreaming of a postcolonial African utopia rising like a phoenix from the ashes of the failed postcolonial state of Nigeria), he was a Biafran at a higher level of philosophical and humanist reasoning as eloquently argued throughout his war lyrics discussed in the present paper, whose themes include: commitment, nationalism and pacifism as they pertain to his Biafran experience; modern warfare …

Doctor of Ministry Projects
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to develop a theoretical and practical framework for implementing a ministry of ecological stewardship for Seventh-day Adventist churches in Korea and ultimately to cultivate an environmental consciousness among Adventists. In order to identify the dynamic relationships of factors involved in eco-stewardship ministry, the study first examined the environmental consciousness and practice of the pastors and members of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Korea. Then it focused on investigating the factors that would possibly affect one’s responsible environmental behavior and the implementation effectiveness of eco-stewardship ministry.
Method
