Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

These factors include professional preparation and conditions within the army as well as its social position, military-civilian relations, the sources of political ideology evident within the military class, the effect of immigration, and even evidence of the influence of personalities upon the nature of the political activities of Brazilian military leaders, primarily army officers.

The Theological Significance Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Joachim Jeremias, David Zersen (Translator) Sep 1968

The Theological Significance Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Joachim Jeremias, David Zersen (Translator)

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the shepherd boy Muhammad ed-Deeb ("The Wolf”) of the half-nomadic tribe Ta'amire threw a stone into a cave to pass the time, it clattered so strangely that he was convinced an evil djin was after him. He ran away in panic-stricken terror, never suspecting that his name would go down in the history of scholarship. He had discovered Cave 1 at Qumran on the northwest coast of the Dead Sea. On the next day of that summer -presumably it was 1947 - he ventured to climb into the cave with his pluckier cousin. They found eight clay jars which …

The Day Of The Lord, Ralph W. Klein Sep 1968

The Day Of The Lord, Ralph W. Klein

Concordia Theological Monthly

What does it mean for Yahweh to have a day? Sigmund Mowinckel saw it as a day of manifestation or epiphany at the New Year's festival, including the celebration of Yahweh's kingship and His saving acts for His people. The eschatological day of Yahweh is only the final and supreme day of Yahweh's enthronement, entirely secondary to His cult day.

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner Aug 1968

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner

Master's Theses

From the insights cleaned from current research into John Milton's years as an undergraduate and a graduate student at Cambridge University, this writer has found an overwhelming amount of material dedicated to pointing out Milton's total lack of affection for that university. For the most part, those statements bearing on Milton's dislike for Cambridge are unequivocal. For example, one scholar has remarked that John Milton departed from the University in 1632 "weary and disguised" with the medieval, unbearable antiquated methods of the place. That same scholar continues with the statement that Milton's attitude toward Cambridge was "uniformly unfriendly" and that …

Antigone, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Jul 1968

Antigone, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1968 Summer Theatre

Jean Anouilh's play Antigone is a tragedy inspired by Greek mythology and the play of the same name (Antigone, by Sophocles) from the fifth century B.C. In English, it is often distinguished from its antecedent by being pronounced similarly to its original French form [ɑ̃tiɡɔn], approximately on-tee-GONE.

The play was first performed in Paris at the Théâtre de l'Atelier on February 6, 1944, during the Nazi occupation. Produced under Nazi censorship, the play is purposefully ambiguous with regard to the rejection of authority (represented by Antigone) and the acceptance of it (represented by Creon). The parallels to …

Lodge Practice Within The Missouri Synod, John W. Constable Jul 1968

Lodge Practice Within The Missouri Synod, John W. Constable

Concordia Theological Monthly

The history of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod reveals that the Synod grappled with the problem of lodges almost from its beginning. In the present essay the author proposes to undertake a chronological survey of the Synod's viewpoints reflected in its official meetings and publications, in books, tracts and conference essays, and so forth. The topic of doctrinal opposition to lodges will not be discussed in any detail since American Lutheranism is all but unanimous on this point. Some attention will be paid to other Lutheran denominations and to possible cultural and economic influence on the lodge practice of the Synod.

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher Jun 1968

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher

History ETDs

Irvin McDowell is an important figure of the Civil War era because the role he played made him a storm center within the Union command structure. His career, therefore, is indicative of certain problems encountered by the North which ultimately prolonged the war. Those command problems, which affected overall federal strategy in the early years of the war, largely centered around four areas: unpreparedness, political intrigue, undefined civil/military functions, and cautious generals. Unpreparedness, the bane of the North's military existence during the early stages of the war, was also a hindrance to McDowell for his talents had previously been restricted …
