The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman Jan 1974

The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The high apostle of the adventure tale in the Strenuous Age, Jack London has never really relinquished the popularity which made him before his death one of the best known and, most widely read writers in the world. It is true that more than one pontiff of literary taste has consigned him to the same, "obsolete" file that contains the remains of Richard Harding Davis, David Graham Phillips, William Sidney Porter, but such reports of London's demise have undoubtedly been premature. Indeed, the contemporary momentum of Jack London studies affords excellent evidence of the critical rediscovery of an American legend. …

Kelsey, Texas: The Founding And Development Of A Latter-Day Saint Gathering Place In Texas, James Clyde Vandygriff

Theses and Dissertations

Kelsey, Texas, was a flourishing Latter-day Saint colony for more than a quarter of a century, beginning at a time when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was encouraging its converts to stay in the mission field. Kelsey was an attempt by the Church to provide Latter-day Saints from the southern states a safe haven from persecution which existed in the South, while leaving them in a geographic area in which they could be comfortable.
The growth and success for many years of the Kelsey Academy was the result of an interesting partnership, not always tranquil, between the …

Jerzy Kosinski’S The Devil Tree: A Work Of Art?, Tom G. Colonnese Jan 1974

Jerzy Kosinski’S The Devil Tree: A Work Of Art?, Tom G. Colonnese

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Jerzy Kosinski Is fourth novel, The Devil Tree, is widely regarded as both a technical and imaginative failure. Rather than being an artistic failure, The Devil Tree is in fact a fully mature and variant expression of Kosinski's art. Some of Kosinski's earlier fame was due to a humanistic misreading of his work. But The Devil Tree made it painfully clear that Kosinski 's own ethic-- particularly when concerned with self-realization - was of another order. Interpreted in the full light of his career it can be seen that Kosinski 's The Devil Tree is the logical outcome of both …

The Cristero Rebellion-- 1926-1929:Its Diplomacy And Solution., Brian John Kelley

History ETDs

In 1926, sporadic fighting broke out in Mexico among Catholics who opposed Plutarco Elias Calles' implementation of the articles of the Constitution of 1917 limiting and restricting the activities of the Catholic Church in education, politics, civil rights and even, it was charged, in spiritual matters. In an attempt to prevent anarchy and also to bring pressure on the Mexican government to refrain from its so-called anti-religious policy, the League for the Defense of Religious Liberty (Liga Nacional Defensora de la Libertad Religiosa) organized many but not all lay Catholic groups. The Mexican hierarchy recognized the civil right of Catholic …

French-Indian Relations (1672-1701): An Economic, Political And Military Study, James Duncan Biggs Oct 1973

French-Indian Relations (1672-1701): An Economic, Political And Military Study, James Duncan Biggs

Dissertations and Theses

This paper concentrates on the political, economic, and military policies of New France (French Canada) towards the Indian tribes inhabiting and bordering New France during the period 1672-1701. It was a period of intensive exploration coupled with the fur trade, principally beaver, both of which activities spurred France to compel its "province" of New France to make alliances with the Indians and to block penetration of the French-claimed area by the English colonists to the south (New York and New England) and to the north (Hudson's Bay area).

Any research must be concerned with many interacting and conflicting factors: the …

Jean Rodolphe De Salis, Switzerland And Europe. Essays And Reflections., Leo Schelbert May 1973

Jean Rodolphe De Salis, Switzerland And Europe. Essays And Reflections., Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This book will be especially welcome to Swiss Americans who do not read German, yet are interested in keeping in touch with their country of origin or want to introduce it to their grown children. Ven Salis, widely known in Switzerland and beyond, can serve as a stimulating and sensitive guide to an understanding of the nature of the Swiss polity, of its past struggles, and of its present attempts at self-definition within the broader European and world community. A lucid and vivid style, well recreated in this translation, and a fair balance between controversial essay, disciplined historical sketch, and …

The Movement Towards Freedom In Paul Goodman's The Empire City., Eliot Glassheim Apr 1973

The Movement Towards Freedom In Paul Goodman's The Empire City., Eliot Glassheim

English Language and Literature ETDs

The dissertation presents The Empire City as an outline of what freedom meant in the 1930-1960 era. Within the context of an increasingly deadening Empire, the characters shed their false assumptions and wrong habits, carve out some free space for themselves, and begin to perform free acts.

Chapter one discusses four components of free acts. Chapter two presents three traditions of thought which define Goodman's idea of freedom--Anarchist politics, Gestalt psychology, and Taoist metaphysics. Chapter three is an overview of the novel as a journey towards freedom.

The fourth chapter follows the developing idea of what politics should mean to …

Indians And Criminal Justice In Early Oregon, 1842-1859, John Samuel Ferrell Apr 1973

Indians And Criminal Justice In Early Oregon, 1842-1859, John Samuel Ferrell

Dissertations and Theses

Indian-white relations in early Oregon are often viewed in terms of warfare and treatymaking, but these are only the most obvious aspects of a larger struggle to resolve cultural conflicts, settle land disputes, and establish order in a new territory. Additional understanding of both white attitudes toward Indians and of Indian exasperation with the settlers may be gained from a study of how criminal justice applied to the red man during the turbulent pre-reservation era.

Prior to the coming of America settlers, Oregon Indians knew the justice of the Hudson's Bay Company. In dealing with personas accused of harming HBC …

Social And Religious Attitudes Among Lutheran Students, Kenneth L. Frerking Mar 1973

Social And Religious Attitudes Among Lutheran Students, Kenneth L. Frerking

Concordia Theological Monthly

College students have probably been "'investigated"' more than any other single category of people. They have certainly been the subject of many articles and essays in recent years. However, much of what has been written has either been without empirical basis altogether, or else the empirical research has focused on only a small minority of the campus population. Leo Cherne, executive director of the Research Institute of America.
