The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz Aug 1974

The Historical Imagination Of Francesco Petrarch: A Study Of Poetic Truth And Historical Distortion, Sally Scholz

Dissertations and Theses

In the continuing debate among historians over the nature, if not the actual existence, of the Italian Renaissance, the life of Francesco Petrarch has played a major role. Petrarch was an outspoken critic and commentator on the state of fourteenth-century society. His opinions have been cited by all scholars interested in the origins of the "Renaissance Mind."

The concern of this paper will be to discuss the sources, development, and purpose of Petrarch's historical imagination. By tracing the course of Petrarch's life I have tried to expose the various factors bearing on his psychological development. His "exile" from Italy, early …

Fictional Treatment Of Politics By Argentine Female Novelists, Bradley M. Class Jul 1974

Fictional Treatment Of Politics By Argentine Female Novelists, Bradley M. Class

Latin American Studies ETDs

Between the ouster of Colonel Juan Domingo Perón from the Presidency of Argentina in September 1955 and his return to power in the Fall of 1973, Argentine women began to write political novels, a new phenomenon in the Argentine literary scene, since few, if any, novels had been created by female novelists prior to 1955. The basic goals of this study are to determine what type(s) of politics these writers possess and to evaluate how they interpret their political ambience through their literary craft. After two historical chapters describing political events from World War I to 1970 and their general …

The Growth Of Anti-British Attitudes In Kentucky Prior To War Of 1812, Edward Pippin Jr. Jun 1974

The Growth Of Anti-British Attitudes In Kentucky Prior To War Of 1812, Edward Pippin Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of belligerency in Kentucky in this period of diplomatic crisis, thus examining the second level of causation for the war as suggested by Brown's study. The test case used is Kentucky which was known as one of the states most anxious for war against Britain, both in Congress and in the state itself. However, this study will not attempt to interpret the role of the state's representatives in the Congress of the United States, since, if Brown is correct in his interpretation, the causes of public belligerency had little to …

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr. May 1974

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an attempt to combine the disciplines of Asian history and United States diplomatic history in analyzing the 1871 Korean-American Incident. The Incident revolves around the Low-Rodgers expedition to Korea, and the subsequent breakdown of peaceful negotiations into a military clash of arms.

To describe the Incident as merely another example of American "imperialism,'' or as a result of narrow-minded Korean isolationism, is to oversimplify its causes and miss the larger implications that can be learned from it. A basic premise of this paper is that the 1871 Incident is an example of East-West cultural conflict. As such, …

A Comparison Of Stock Love Situations In The Works Of Petrarch, Donne, And Cervantes, John W. Metzger Apr 1974

A Comparison Of Stock Love Situations In The Works Of Petrarch, Donne, And Cervantes, John W. Metzger

Honors Theses

The works of Petrarch, Donne, and Cervantes have in common a considerable emphasis on stock love situations. These stock situations include such occurrences as the meeting of lovers, the reaction of the lover to the disdain of his lady, the burning desire of the lover to be physically present with his lady, and the parting of lovers. A certain twist in a situation, originally used by Petrarch, in the poetry of Donne or prose of Cervantes, can provide an excellent insight into the ideas concerning love of all three authors. Petrarch espoused a rather narrow love philosophy. In the great …

The Mind And Mission Of St. Francis Xavier, Warren Andrew Apr 1974

The Mind And Mission Of St. Francis Xavier, Warren Andrew

Graduate Thesis Collection

Francis Xavier is of historical importance in two respects: (1) he was one of the small band of men who, led by Ignatius of Loyola, founded the Society of Jesus, and (2) he was the first Christian missionary to Japan. In addition to these major points of importance, he life and work are in close relation to the historical events, both ecclesiastical and secular, of the first half of the sixteenth century. A more complete biographical study of Xavier must bring in the names and offices of numerous leaders of church and state in many countries. It must also, at …

in the issue. . .

IN THIS JANUARY 1974 issue, we range uneasily from the tragedy of the Mid East to the more predictable behavior of Chief Justice Warren Burger respecting the First Amendment to a quiet but hopeful examination of the political efforts of the elderly to improve their straitened lives to informed speculation on the rate of personality cults in general and the cult of Chairman Mao in particular; and we end on the literary note with a new approach to the criticism of poetry illustrated by a comparison of three poems by William Stafford, and with a …

Social Upheaval And Social Change In England, 1381-1750, Sarah J. Cooney Jan 1974

Social Upheaval And Social Change In England, 1381-1750, Sarah J. Cooney

Dissertations and Theses

The social, revolutionary upheavals that frequently exploded on the American scene during the past ten years provided a contemporary, if not sophisticated, framework for the teaching of English history to secondary students. The insights gained from this relational approach emphasized two specific issues during the eras in which England developed into a modern nation: (1) historical events set the stage for social dissatisfaction; and, (2) parliamentary actions reflected the awareness levels that gradually seeped into the social consciousness of the English politic. In isolation, five of these societal insurrections, the Peasant Revolt of 1381, the Ket Uprising in 1549, the …

The author relates Edomite history through the lens of biblical criticism and available historical, geographical, sociological, and archaeological analyses. The Edomite relationship to ancient Israel is examined in an attempt to bring into focus much of the long forgotten and ignored history of Edom.

Francois Hotman And Jean Bodin. Political Activity In Sixteenth Century France, Joan C. Tronto Jan 1974

Francois Hotman And Jean Bodin. Political Activity In Sixteenth Century France, Joan C. Tronto

Honors Papers

The sixteenth century was a tumultuous age for Europe. The Habsburg dynasty established its hegemony in Europe. The exploration of the New World provided a new source of wonder and wealth. Dynasties changed in France. England had women rulers. The Reformation exploded, transforming the religion of millions. With the Reformation and Counter-Reformation came political and religious disputes that resulted in warfare for more than thirty years.

Political theory flourished during this century. The printing presses became important weapons in these wars, as writers attempted to analyze political authority in, light of religious disunity. As the single Christian Commonwealth disappeared, questions …
