The Introduction Of The Apprenticeship System To Jamaica : The First Period, Ernel A. Henry
The Introduction Of The Apprenticeship System To Jamaica : The First Period, Ernel A. Henry
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
After living under the dominance of the white planters, the Negroes of Jamaica and other West Indian Islands became dependent on their masters for all that was necessary for the sustenance of life. However, when the atrocities of slavery became unbearable, and the sugar industry was no longer profitable to the masses of the British population, it became necessary to end the system. The conviction of the British government was that there must be a gradual emancipation in order to acquaint the Negroes with the life and responsibilities of free men. An experimental arrangement was introduced to implement the new …

Maple Leaf And Mud A Study Of Soldiering In World War I As Told By Members Of The Tenth Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force 1915-1918, Dean N. Duncan
All Master's Theses
"Maple Leaf and Mud" makes no claim to be a formal unit history, instead it is an attempt to describe the lifestyle of the Tenth Battalion in the trenches during World War I. It is based on unpublished letters, correspondence, and interviews. Preservation of this original source material is the primary purpose of "Maple Leaf and Mud."
Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland
Berlin Historians And German Politics, Charles E. Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
By the dawn of the twentieth century, German historians, like "the German academic community as a whole, had fallen into the role of a vaguely conservative and decidedly official establishment." The last third of the nineteenth century had seen the triumph of Prussia over the academic world as well as the political communities of the German lands, with the cultural policy and impulses of Berlin deeply influencing the direction of German historiography and political thought. This influence took the form of an accommodation of power and idealism rather than a purge of the universities, which were the undisputed home of …
The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson
The Box Elder Stake Academy In Its Historical Setting, Byron L. Parkinson
Theses and Dissertations
The Box Elder Stake Academy was a part of the Church System of Academies under the direction of Karl G. Maeser. The historical setting of Box Elder County is rather unique. It was here that Lorenzo Snow directed one of the most successful forms of the United Order. The nearby city of Corinne was established as one of the few gentile cities in Utah, and from there a new crusade to end Mormon rule in Utah was begun.
The Box Elder Stake Academy was one of the first academies created under the direction of the First Presidency of the Church. …
The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. The intention in this study is not so much to overturn that view …

Victor Considerant And The Failure Of La Réunion, Rondel V. Davidson

While traveling from Dallas, Texas to Fort Worth via the Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike, one crosses about 1,200 acres of land on the outskirts of West Dallas which once accommodated an experiment to fulfill one of the nineteenth century's most noble dreams- the dream that man could establish social, economic, and political justice through some type of communal association. Today the area is bounded on the north by the Trinity River, on the south by the Old Fort Worth Highway, on the east by Hampton Road, and on the west by Westmoreland Avenue. Perhaps ironically, this territory now harbors an industrial …
Siegmund Lubin: Moving Picture Pioneer 1851-1923, John Arthur Helley
Siegmund Lubin: Moving Picture Pioneer 1851-1923, John Arthur Helley
Theses
Siegmund Lubin came to the United States of America in 1867, and six years later, after various setbacks, established an optical business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Experiments in his leisure time led him to a career in moving pictures. His success and accomplishments in the period of two decades were entangled in legal battles which resulted in his return to the optical business.
Mr. Lubin built several studios across the United States in a westward expansion. His studio in Coronado, California in 1915–16, with eastern controls, proved to have been typical of the western studio during the early motion picture days. …
Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson
Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories which reveal a completely different aspect of his writing and thinking from that of the highly symbolic, often existential nature of his poetry. He was able, in his short stories, to recall and tell the many-faceted feelings of a boy as he grows from early childhood into young adulthood. Along with the pleasures and hurts experienced, the mischief involved in, and the mistakes made in the process of maturing, Dylan Thomas reveals an underlying humorous, irreverent quality and attitude which seems to imply that the one who does not take himself too seriously can …
Changing Western Images Of Russia During The Reign Of Catherine Ii, 1762-1796, Janet L. Menze
Changing Western Images Of Russia During The Reign Of Catherine Ii, 1762-1796, Janet L. Menze
Dissertations and Theses
The question of Russia’s relationship to Western European culture has been discussed by historians of Russian civilization for several centuries. This study aims to broaden the understanding of that relationship by investigating some of the conditions of eighteenth century Russia and Europe which led the Western Europeans to formulate an image of Russia, of Russian civilization, and of the role that Russia should play in Western European affairs. This study attempts to provide the views of a cross-section of eighteenth century Western Europeans and Americans toward the Russia of Empress Catherine II, 1762-1796.

War And Pacifism In The Lord Of The Rings, Nan C. Scott
War And Pacifism In The Lord Of The Rings, Nan C. Scott
Tolkien Journal
Examines polarized reactions to The Lord of the Rings as both a pro-war and pacifistic work. Sees it as much more balanced, showing Tolkien believed war to sometimes be necessary but peace to be preferable, and mercy to be important above all.
