Jack Schaefer, Gerald Haslam Jan 1975

Jack Schaefer, Gerald Haslam

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

In 1945 Jack Schaefer, then a Norfolk, Virginia, newspaper editor, decided to write a story “to prove that there is no reason why an attempt cannot be made to create literature about the west as about the east or the south or any place anywhere.” He set his story in a Wyoming valley torn by conflict between pioneer farmers and a resident cattle baron trying to retain the open range. Then he introduced a palladin figure called Shane.

Parody And Vision In The Designs Of Blake's Jerusalem, Adrienne Atkinson Jan 1975

Parody And Vision In The Designs Of Blake's Jerusalem, Adrienne Atkinson

Honors Papers

This thesis by no means exhausts the possible ways in which word and image combine to form Jerusalem. The discussions are intended to illuminate how parody is expressed in the designs although many other aspects of the plates could be examined. I have selected those plates which show most clearly that the recognition of the relationship between parody and vision, error and truth, is for Blake essential to man's renovation. Beginning with simple examples. I will conclude with a consideration of the five full plate designs which form a frame for Jerusalem. I will concentrate on the designs but the …

Frederic Remington, Fred Erisman Jan 1975

Frederic Remington, Fred Erisman

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

To an entire generation of readers, Frederic Remington was the spokesman for the American West. For almost a quarter of a century, from 1886 until his death in 1909, his drawings and paintings, published in Harper’s Weekly, The Century, Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Collier’s, and other large-circulation magazines of the time, gave to many readers their only glimpses of Western life and the western landscape. The popular acclaim for his work was echoed by the American art establishment. During his lifetime, Remington was elected to membership in the National Academy of Design and awarded an honorary Bachelor of Fine Arts …

Treason And Talking: Three Wartime Broadcasters, Mary M. Roberts Jan 1975

Treason And Talking: Three Wartime Broadcasters, Mary M. Roberts

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Radio propaganda was one of the chief weapons of psychological warfare used by the Nazis. When Hitler came to power, one of the aims of Nazi propaganda was to make his new order acceptable to the powers abroad, before preparing the ground for his expansionist moves. The new ruler of Germany regarded propaganda, rather then diplomacy, as the more suitable instrument to attain the desired end.

As a result of this new weapon in propaganda, there came many problems for the home front. How could they maintain the faith and morale of the people being submitted to this constant barrage? …

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

D. J. "Joe" Saia, of Frontenac, Kansas, has been county commissioner and the leader of the Democratic Party in Crawford County, Kansas, for the past three decades. An unemployed coal miner with an eighth-grade education, the county commissioner from Frontenac came from the bottom of the social pyramid. He was able, through his adaptability, tenacity, basic understanding of human nature, and undying concern for those in need, to fight his way to the position of chairman of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners and the leader of a successful political organization.

The road to power was not an easy path, …

A Revival Of The Gothic Tale In French Twentieth Century Literature : Claude Seignolle, Eric Deudon Jan 1975

A Revival Of The Gothic Tale In French Twentieth Century Literature : Claude Seignolle, Eric Deudon

Master's Theses

It is perhaps the very diversity of his gifts and interests that has prevented Claude Seignolle so far from reaching the wide public that his work deserves. The scholars know him and rightly value his unique contributions to folklore; the novelist know well that his novels are a distinct contribution to literature, written as they are with the pure and forceful eye of the poet. Finally, those who are interested in the devil keep their eyes open for every new tale by this strange diabolist ... These little tales of mystery and horror have a quality which is entirely their …

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak Jan 1975

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak

Theses and Dissertations

William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.

It is difficult to assess what actually caused William J. Bryan to lose the 1900 Presidential election in Utah. Yet, we must put to rest the conclusion that he lost solely because silver was an unimportant issue to the Utah electorate in 1900. The powerful influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on …

A Certain Solid Ground : The Mary-Martha Motif In The Fiction Of Katherine Anne Porter, Rosemary Mulvaney Dietrick Jan 1975

A Certain Solid Ground : The Mary-Martha Motif In The Fiction Of Katherine Anne Porter, Rosemary Mulvaney Dietrick

Master's Theses

She had spent years of strategic warfare trying to beat those people out of her life; then more years trying to ignore them; to forget them; to hate them; and in the end she loved them as she knew well she was meant in simple nature to do, and acknowledged it; it brought her no peace, and yet it put a certain solid ground under her feet.

The preceding passage from Katherine Anne Porter 's Ship of Fools reveals the rebellious thoughts of a young American artist named Jenny, an almost autobiographical heroine, who inveighs against the pragmatic women in …

Na Tse Ke: A Re-Evaluation Of Some Major Trends In United States Apache Policy, 1847-1887, D. C. Cole Jan 1975

Na Tse Ke: A Re-Evaluation Of Some Major Trends In United States Apache Policy, 1847-1887, D. C. Cole

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The relationship of the United States Government and the Apache Indians of Arizona and New Mexico was marred by thirty years of war. The thesis, of which this is an abstract, is an investigation into the appropriateness of selected aspects of United States policy toward the Apache in the years 1847-1887. The essential questions in this analysis and re-evaluation of policy are not why and how? did the United States prevail, but rather: Did the authorities understand the nature of the Apache? Did the policies in the area fit that nature? And if not, could the cost have been less …

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott Jan 1975

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. It is true that as Mexico’s renowned poet, essayist, playwright, editor and diplomat, Paz treats the …

A Study Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Upper Canada, 1830-1850, Richard E. Bennett Jan 1975

A Study Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Upper Canada, 1830-1850, Richard E. Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the factors contributing to the rise and subsequent decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Upper Canada. Although the time period of this study spans from 1830 until 1850, the principal years of activity were from 1832 until 1840. An effort is made to discuss any major location wherein the Church made substantial progress.

The major contribution of the thesis lies in the effort to stage the Mormon drama against a Canadian background of changing social factors. During the times of greatest economic stagnation, political upheaval and …

Joseph Smith The Colonizer, Brent L. Winward Jan 1975

Joseph Smith The Colonizer, Brent L. Winward

Theses and Dissertations

In written history, Joseph Smith's colonizing efforts have been overshadowed by the Mormon settlement of the west. No one has really made a study of Joseph Smith as a colonizer. To this founder of the Mormon way of life, religion was more than a code of Sunday ethics. According to President Smith, man was created as an actual child of God and his Heavenly Father was concerned with providing for all his needs. Therefore, the revealed word of God in addition to listing a spiritual code of ethics, also contained provisions for the physical, social, political, economical, educational, safety needs, …

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green Jan 1975

Structural Cohesion In Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger Trilogy, Laura Maurine Green

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper will demonstrate how Bennett’s “circumstantial” history of his age, as it streams by the reader, is controlled, analyzed, and interpreted. The framework of characters and events stand firm, their foundations solid in the systematic working-out, through symbolism and irony, of Bennett’s conviction that there is a “cause and effect” relationship between the physical environment and the character and sociological evolution and the character. Bennett writes that “the spirit of literature… enforces a moral wisdom by tracing everywhere of cause and effect.” The structures of characters and events are raised, reinforced, illuminated, inspected, and photographed through the use of …

Böll's "Lady": A New Eve, Margareta Deschner Dec 1974

Böll's "Lady": A New Eve, Margareta Deschner

University of Dayton Review

“What kind of a young woman is this ... ?” cries the author and rechercheur of Heinrich Böll’s Group Portrait with Lady (Gruppenbild mit Dame) when confronted with Leni Pfeiffer, née Gruyten, the central figure of the portrait and the recent Nobel Prize-winning novel. The reader, echoing this question, is so intrigued by the search for the real Leni, set up in a cunning way by Böll himself, that he takes at face value the author’s amazement, willing to forget that Leni is the embodiment of Böll’s own dream of the real woman, his long-planned creation of a new Eve.

Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, E. H. Bovay Nov 1974

Sir Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, E. H. Bovay

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In August, 1923, the then Governor of the Gold Coast (Ghana), Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, paid a visit to Switzerland. Although proud to welcome such a high dignitary, especially one with such a Bernese sounding name, the Swiss authorities were somewhat embarassed when the Governor asked to be taken to the birthplace of his ancestors. Nobody knew for certain, since the Bernese municipalities of Belp, Guggisberg, Niedermuhlern, Schwarzenburg and Zimmerwalk all claimed him as one of their sons. The origins of the Governor have been traced recently. Frederick Gordon Guggisberg's grandfather Johann (John), born in 1808 and a citizen of Belp …
