Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy Apr 1994

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy

Theses and Dissertations

This research details a point of reference to understand two case studies of cooperation that developed among lower-level, or non policy-making bureaucrats during times of conflict or war. Using components of game theory, I propose that when an international conflictual relationship occurs that resembles an iterated Prisoners' Dilemma, and that meets certain conditions, tacit cooperation can emerge. Tacit cooperation consists of illicit or implied cooperation that is not sanctioned at the national policy level.

In this research I develop a framework of tacit cooperation, relying heavily upon Robert Axelrod's theory of evolutionary cooperation. With the framework in place, I then …

The Vital Life: D.H. Lawrence's Response To A Dehumanized World, Rebecca Recce White Apr 1994

The Vital Life: D.H. Lawrence's Response To A Dehumanized World, Rebecca Recce White

English Theses & Dissertations

As D.H. Lawrence experienced World War I and the Industrial Revolution, he recognized the inner spirits of men and women being valued less in the midst of war and industrialism. Lawrence's novels, short stories, and other works dramatize this dehumanizing process. Of his novels, five will be examined in this study: Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, The Plumed Serpent, and Lady Chatterley's Lover. Pivotal relationships between men and women are outlined by Lawrence to illustrate the ways in which they either reflect or challenge society.

Lawrence gives the readers a view of the modern age torn apart …

A River Ran Through It... : The Cultural Ecology Of The Santa Clara Valley Riparian Zone, Erin M. Reilly

Research Manuscript Series

This study addresses the nature of human interaction with the riparian environment in the Santa Clara Valley over time. This is not a new anthropological theme. Literature dates to 1863 The Earth as Modified by Human Action, by George P. Marsh); cultural ecologist Betty J Meggars stated: "The relationship- of culture to environment is one of the oldest problems in the science of anthropology ... "(Meggars, 1968:19); and, anthropologist Alfred Kroeber said: "no culture is wholly intelligible without reference to the nonculture, or so-called environmental factors with which it is in relation and which condition it "(Kroeber 1906:297).

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley Jan 1994

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy Jan 1994

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy

Quidditas

One of the most remarkable monuments of medieval literature in any language is the thirteenth-century French Lancelot–Grail Cycle (also called the Prose Lancelot, the Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian Romance, or the Pseudo-Map Cycle—the last because the texts identify the author as Walter Map, who complicated matters, however, by dying well before the cycle was written). Before turning to the subject indicated in my title, I'll situate the cycle and offer a few details about its phenomenal importance.
