Competitive Boosterism: How Milwaukee Lost The Braves, Glen Gendzel
Competitive Boosterism: How Milwaukee Lost The Braves, Glen Gendzel
Faculty Publications, History
By any measure, major-league baseball in North America surely qualifies as big business. The national pastime is a vital component of today's urban political economy, and baseball teams resemble other high-prestige businesses in that cities must compete for the privilege of hosting them - whatever their true worth. A study analyzes the transfer of the Milwaukee Braves baseball franchise to Atlanta in 1965 as the outcome of "competitive boosterism" or the active participation of local elites in luring trade, industry, and investment from other cities for the purpose of economic development.

Britain’S Only Offensive: An Assessment Of The Influence Of Bomber Command On British Morale, 1939-1942, Brian Keith Gulick
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The assumptions historians make regarding their subjects can prove weak. This study considers one assumption made by historians studying the British bombing offensive against Germany during the first three years of World War II. Scholars, in their attempts to justify an expensive, dangerous and morally questionable strategic attack against Germany, have related the first three years of the air war to British home front morale. They make general statements linking the bombing of Germany to the status of home morale, concluding that the offensive boosted British spirits. However, no real evidence has been presented to either support or deny this …

Problem. It has been suggested that the biblical account of the Israelite conquest of Canaan and the archaeological data are incompatible. This study evaluates the five main Israelite settlement theories and reevaluates the Book of Joshua as it relates to archaeology.
Method. Chapter 1 surveys the five archaeological theories of the Israelite emergence in Canaan. Chapter 2 critiques each theory. Chapter 3 examines the Book of Joshua from an archaeological and thematic perspective. Chapter 4 highlights presuppositions that have been brought to the archaeological data and the Book of Joshua. Chapter 5 uses the discussions of chapters 2, 3, and …

The Encirclement At Cherkassy-Korsun: An Assessment Of The Winners And Losers, Joseph Kent Lutes
Masters Theses
During the winter of 1944, two Russian armies encircled two German corps on the Dnieper River. The Germans managed to break out of the encirclement after an attempt to relieve them failed. The battle lasted only three weeks, but cost both sides greatly. Both sides carried out a successful airlift to keep their troops in action. The Germans carried out a brilliant campaign, while the Russians demonstrated that they still needed to perfect their encirclement doctrine and their propaganda.
Each side was hindered by its leaders. Hitler forced the Germans to hold ground, while Stalin forced his generals to fight …

Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby
Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby
Swiss American Historical Society Review
History has not seen fit to couple the names of Benjamin Franklin and Heinrich Zschokke. To attempt to do so at this 1ate date, then, may well suggest dilettantism or even charlatanry. What can be said in defense of what might seem to be a whimsical coupling, one which flies in the face of time-tested historical judgment? To proceed logically: one begins, as an American, with a study of colonial history before, during, and after the Revolution, where one very quickly encounters the towering figure of Benjamin Franklin. Then, as a student of Swiss history and culture, one turns to …

Allied Communications Intelligence And The Monsoon Group, 1943-1945, Christopher G. Stuart
History Theses & Dissertations
The critical weakness of trade between Germany and Japan during the Second World War was exposed in 1943, when, after all other methods had failed, the Axis powers resorted to submarines as their main means of transportation. The Allied powers succeeded in disrupting the submarines, which the Germans called the Monsoon group. The Allies used communications intelligence to disrupt the Monsoon group in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Recently released United States Armed Forces LTRA decrypts, MAGIC messages and their summaries, and Selected Research Histories (SRH) provide the previously top secret details.

The European practice of conceptualizing their enemies so that they could dispose of them in ways that were not in accord with their own Christian principles is well documented. In the Americas, this began with Columbus's designation of certain Indians as man-eaters and was continued by those Spanish who also wished to enslave the natives or eliminate them altogether. The word “cannibal” was invented to describe such people, and the Spanish were legally free to treat cannibals in ways that were forbidden to them in their relations with other people. By the late fifteenth century the word cannibal had assumed …

Two Women On The Verge Of A Contextual Breakthrough: Using 'A Feminist Dictionary' In The Literature Classroom, Sheila Reiter, Barbara Dibernard
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Barbara: The following dialogue relates our experiences using A Feminist Dictionary (AFD) in literature classes. My perspective is that of a feminist teacher who has found AFD to be a useful tool in bringing feminist theory and practice into alignment in the classroom. I believe it is crucial to connect the personal and the public and to connect theory and practice. One of my primary goals as a teacher is to get students to see them selves as agents who are capable of resistance and of personal and social change. In order to facilitate that, we examine hierarchy and power …
