Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page
Switzerland And Burgundy In The Late Middle Ages, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the late Middle Ages Switzerland's principal rival was the Duchy of Burgundy. Although the medieval Kingdom of Burgundy has long since vanished, in the fifteenth century Burgundy was one of the most powerful states of Europe.2Its territories included present day Belgium, Holland, the French provinces of Flanders, Alsace, Lorraine, Franche-Comte, Savoy and Burgundy, as well as the three Swiss cantons of Geneva, the Vaud and the Valais. For nearly two millennia, these territories of the old Kingdom of Burgundy have been among the most progressive in Europe. The "loi gombette" of the ancient Burgundians was the most humane of …

Tolkien As A Post-War Writer, Tom Shippey
Tolkien As A Post-War Writer, Tom Shippey
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
The Lord of the Rings, though unique in many ways, is only one of a series of fantasies published by English authors before, during, and just after World War II, works united in their deep concern with the nature of evil and their authors’ belief that politics had given them a novel understanding of this ancient concept. This paper sets Tolkien in this contemporary context and considers what has been unique in his understanding of the modern world.

Power In Arda: Sources, Uses And Misuses, Edith L. Crowe
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Power and renunciation of power has long been recognised as an important theme in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. This paper will examine the issue of power with particular attention to Riane Eisler's dominator/partnership model of power relations and the power within/power over dichotomy. It will consider the sources of power: spiritual, political, physical; and how these are wielded by the various peoples and individuals of Middle-earth.
Tolkien And Englishness, Chris Hopkins
Tolkien And Englishness, Chris Hopkins
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
This paper discusses ways in which Tolkien draws upon various ideas of Englishness in order to construct his epic fictional world. In particular, Tolkien's combinations of different periods and traditions of Englishness - Anglo-Saxon, nineteenth-century - are explored.

"Propaganda Must Be Painless": Radio Entertainment And Government Propaganda During World War Ii, Gerd Horten
CUP Faculty Research
For a jittery radio industry concerned about the future of American broadcasting in the early months after America's entry into World War II, William B. Lewis came as a godsend. As head of the Domestic Radio Division of the Office of Facts and Figures (OFF), and later the Office of War Information (OWI, June 1942), Lewis, a former vicepresident of CBS, reassured the industry that the commercial structure of American radio would remain unchanged. In his first meeting with network executives and radio sponsors and advertisers in January 1942, he outlined his pragmatic approach to radio's war effort. As he …

Josiah Gorgas And The Richmond Ordnance Industry: The Arsenal Of The Confederacy, J. Michael Moore
Josiah Gorgas And The Richmond Ordnance Industry: The Arsenal Of The Confederacy, J. Michael Moore
History Theses & Dissertations
This study determines that Richmond, Virginia was the center of the Confederate domestic ordnance industry, and Josiah Gorgas, the Confederate Chief of Ordnance mobilized the city's industrial potential. Richmond's government ordnance facilities and private companies manufactured artillery, shoulder arms, ammunition, tools, and other ordnance materials that prolonged the war. In addition, Richmond became the center for Confederate ordnance research. Despite serious logistical problems, Gorgas supplied the Confederate Army's demand for arms and ammunition until 1865. Finally, Gorgas's mobilization of Confederate industry remains instructive for any nation going to war. These conclusions are based on extensive research of the National Archives …

Homer, His Art And His World [Review], Erwin F. Cook
Homer, His Art And His World [Review], Erwin F. Cook
Classical Studies Faculty Research
First let me say what this book is not. Although the dust-jacket claims that the book includes "sections on the relevance of Homer to modern issues in literary criticism", it cannot be said to offer anything approaching a representative, let alone a comprehensive, survey of modern criticism, even as it is currently applied to Homer (H.). It does, in 34 pages, outline "the historical background to Homer and his poetry", but only for those who share the author's assumptions on the time, place, and circumstances of composition.

From Sexual Prejudice To Patriarchy And Its Agents: The Radicalization Of Mary Daly's Analysis Of Sexism, Teresa Bellow-Stratton
From Sexual Prejudice To Patriarchy And Its Agents: The Radicalization Of Mary Daly's Analysis Of Sexism, Teresa Bellow-Stratton
Masters Theses
This thesis interprets key concepts in Mary Daly's analysis of sexism as they are developed in her first three books. It highlights the continuities more than the discontinuities in Daly's writing. The constant features of Daly's writing are her existentialist orientation and a complex synthesis of ideas that relates the subjective experience of individuals, the objective social circumstances of individuals, and socially constructed stereotypes, especially those stereotypes expressed in religious language.
Muslims And Jews In Thirteenth-Century Valencian Law, Scott M. Gyenes
Muslims And Jews In Thirteenth-Century Valencian Law, Scott M. Gyenes
Masters Theses
When the Muslim kingdom of Valencia was conquered between 1233-1245 during the Reconguista, by James I, a new era was ushered in for the resident Muslims and Jews, because they would now be ruled by a minority Christian government. King James, in an attempt to control the newly settled Christians, issued the law code the Furs of Valencia. Additionally the Furs also established Christian legal superiority over the Muslims and Jewish populations, too.
The Furs of Valencia are highly valuable in the study of law, because of the influence of Roman, canon, and Islamic law. These influences helped slow …

Trends In Worship And Church Growth Into The 21st Century, Byron Spadlin
Trends In Worship And Church Growth Into The 21st Century, Byron Spadlin
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
As I have traveled, in this country and in others talking to numerous Christian leaders, and observing a number of different congregations, denominations and contexts, I believe the following major broad stroke trends regarding worship I believe can be anticipated by the churches and Christian communities around the world. 1. Controversy over worship styles will continue. 2. Diversity of Worship styles will increase. 3. Worship-based services will emerge and increase. 4. Inter-denominational and Regional Cooperation in worship events will increase. 5. Worship will be seen as Evangelism. 6. Evangelicals are experimenting with more formal liturgy and Orthodoxy. 7. Technology will …
Revolutionaries In The First Century, Kent P. Jackson
Revolutionaries In The First Century, Kent P. Jackson
BYU Studies
Zealots, terrorists, freedom-fighters, bandits, revolutionaries—who were those people whose zeal for religion, for power, or for freedom motivated them to take on the Roman Empire, the greatest force in the ancient world, and believe that they could win? Because the books of Flavius Josephus are the only source for most of our understanding of the participants in the First Jewish Revolt, we are necessarily dependent on Josephus for the answers to this question. His writings will be our guide as we examine the groups and individuals involved in the Jewish rebellion.
The Roman Army In The First Century, William J. Hamblin
The Roman Army In The First Century, William J. Hamblin
BYU Studies
At the time of Jesus, the Roman army was at the height of its power and prestige. In the preceding four centuries, Roman legions had raised Rome from a small regional city-state to master of the entire Mediterranean world. Barring a few notable defeats—such as during the war against Hannibal or the battle of the Teutoberg Forest—Roman arms had proved victorious against Gauls, Germans, Iberians, Britons, Mauritanians, Numidians, Cartheginians, Libyans, Egyptians, Illyrians, Macedonians, Greeks, Thracians, Capadocians, Armenians, Persians, Syrians, Arabs, and Judeans, creating one of the greatest military empires of world history. The overwhelming military power of Rome was the …
The Resurgence Of The Wehrmacht On The Western Front In The Fall Of 1944, Aaron S. Hamilton
The Resurgence Of The Wehrmacht On The Western Front In The Fall Of 1944, Aaron S. Hamilton
History Theses & Dissertations
The resurgence of the Wehrmacht on the western front in the fall of 1944 was the product of the German Army High Command's attempt to overcome the severe effects of attrition by institutionalizing fanaticism and generating extreme self-sacrifice among its soldiers. The nature, form, and purpose of the Wehrmacht's resurgence in the west has never been fully explained and only examined in the context of operational histories. The Ardennes offensive has traditionally been used in the operational histories of the Allied campaign in Europe to demonstrate the Wehrmacht's physical ability to reorganize weapons, equipment and personnel effectively. The counter offensive, …
Lord Byron's Heroines, Cathy Douglas Rodreguez
Lord Byron's Heroines, Cathy Douglas Rodreguez
English Theses & Dissertations
Byron as a poet, aristocrat, and Romantic, began as all the other poets of his time, in a traditional fashion. But unlike the other poets, Byron began to develop a heroine who would become a voice for the realities of society. Despite the fact that Byron had many love affairs, he also respected women, believing in their right of autonomy within society. He considered them his equal, relishing lively debates with them on many topics. Byron's heroines embodied sentimentalism, integrity, morality and intelligence, which in turn subtlety influenced society to respect a woman's desire to openly express her emotions. What …

Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, And Latin: Languages Of New Testament Judea, Roger T. Macfarlane

A trilingual inscription placed by Pontius Pilate upon the cross proclaimed "Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews." This titulus was able to be read by many of the Jews, John says, not only because of Golgatha's proximity to the city, but also because the text was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Pilate's declaration addressed the multilingual population of Jerusalem, both its residents and also its visitors, who were filling the city during the Passover. Weeks later, on the day of Pentecost, Peter and some Apostles addressed Jews, residents of Jerusalem who had gathered from every nation, and …
