The United States And The Fascist Threat In Latin America During World War Ii, Larry Brent Ward Jan 1997

The United States And The Fascist Threat In Latin America During World War Ii, Larry Brent Ward

Master's Theses

This thesis is the author's attempt to locate the origins of policies employed by the United States during World War II to control, through confinement, deportation and repatriation, German and German Jewish nationals living in Latin America. It also recounts the difficulties that several German nationals faced at the hands of a somewhat intransigent but entirely apathetic United States government. Through an examination of select State Department records, memoirs of government officials and letters of Axis nationals interned by the United States during World War II, one can better understand the reasons behind this little known aspect of American foreign …

Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz Jan 1997

Toward A Theology Of Youth Ministry And Its Praxis In The Local Church, Luis Fernando Ortiz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In many Seventh-day Adventist churches in North America patterns of non involvement among the youth were observed. Young people were attending church on Sabbath, but almost none of them were leaders. The objective of this dissertation was to identify biblical principles for the development of a youth ministry in which leaders build responsible servant leaders and encourage young people to grow, learn, and use their gifts in Christian ministry.

Method

The Scriptures were searched for a biblical background for youth work and principles for successful youth involvement. The word “youth” was analyzed in the Old and New Testaments together …

Measure 9: Oregon’S 1992 Anti-Gay Initiative, Patricia Jean Young Jan 1997

Measure 9: Oregon’S 1992 Anti-Gay Initiative, Patricia Jean Young

Dissertations and Theses

In 1992 Oregon voters rejected Measure 9, an anti-gay initiative sponsored by the Oregon Citizens Alliance, a conservative, religious organization. Measure 9 sought to amend the Oregon Constitution to prohibit the state from establishing civil rights protections based on sexual orientation. Its passage also would have required government agencies and schools to set a standard that declared homosexuality as abnormal and perverse.

The Measure 9 campaign was emotional and divisive. Rhetoric was at an all-time high as the issue of gay-rights made front-page news, and Oregonians from all walks of life were forced to examine their beliefs about homosexuality, religion, …

Understanding And Dealing With Ancestral Practices In Botswana, Stanley P. Chikwekwe Jan 1997

Understanding And Dealing With Ancestral Practices In Botswana, Stanley P. Chikwekwe

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Ancestral and other traditional practices continue to trouble the Seventh-day Adventist Church in several parts of the world. It is not uncommon for believers to seek ancestors' mediation whenever they are faced with problems. Most church members deny that ancestral and other traditional practices exist within the church, whereas others do not want to discuss the issue o f traditional practices because of fear of being labeled superstitious. The denial is due to the way the church has handled ancestral practices in the past. Because most members do not know what to do when problems come, they revert to …

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier Jan 1997

Introduction: The Hindu-Christian-Science Trialogue, Klaus K. Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

As an enthusiastic practitioner of Hindu-Christian dialogue in India in the sixties, I noted how frequently my Hindu dialogue partners resorted to modern science to make their points. They either drew parallels between ideas held by classical Indian authors and modern scientific findings, or they claimed "Vedic" origins for contemporary scientific or technical developments. More often than not they would perceive complete harmony between Vedanta and twentieth-century Western science, detailing how contemporary physics was supporting Advaita Vedanta or how Darwin's theory of evolution had been anticipated by Samkhya. Having had a lifelong interest in the sciences I found this turn …

An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson Jan 1997

An Examination Of The Intelligence Preparation For Operation Market-Garden, September, 1944, Steven D. Rosson

Masters Theses

The Allied defeat at Arnhem, Holland in September 1944 marked the end of one of the most bold and audacious, ground and airborne operations ever undertaken. Many military historian have incorrectly labeled Operation MARKET-GARDEN an intelligence failure. This statement is true only in so far as the Allied intelligence structure failed to persuade their commanders to alter the planned invasion despite the voluminous intelligence data acquired. But did these commander have hidden agendas which made intelligence almost irrelevant?

The purpose of this research is to investigate the Allied, strategic and operational intelligence preparation for Operation MARKET-GARDEN and determine its adequacy. …

Science And Christianity: The Positive Attitude, C. Gordon Winder Jan 1997

Science And Christianity: The Positive Attitude, C. Gordon Winder

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Judeo-Christian Scriptures have been considered by literalists as true in every aspect, including references to the sciences. Scripture states that earth has four corners suggesting that the earth is flat. The sun rises in the morning suggesting that the sun goes around the earth, and earth with humankind is at the centre of the universe. The six days in the Genesis account along with the genealogical chronologies were used by Irish Bishop James Ussher (1581-1652) to calculate that the earth's origin was in 4004 B.C. The Genesis account relates that the origin of humankind, and all the plants and …

Vendanta And Modern Science: Some Demarcation Criteria And Commonalities, Varadaraja V. Raman Jan 1997

Vendanta And Modern Science: Some Demarcation Criteria And Commonalities, Varadaraja V. Raman

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the past centuries, Western scholars who studied the complexities of Indian thought had at least two motivations. First, there was a need to understand the alien mind-set which they were eager to ameloriate (convert), for they worked on the conviction that they were bringing truth, light, and salvation to a misguided lot. They felt that it was their evangelical responsibility to redeem lost souls. Some of them, whether overtly or subtly, wanted to give moral ammunition to the colonial governments which were summarily imposing Western values and worldview on the subject peoples.

The Freedom Of The Christian For Culture, Timothy Lull Jan 1997

The Freedom Of The Christian For Culture, Timothy Lull

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

It is somewhat surprising for Timothy Lull to be invited to address a liturgical conference of any sort. I was talking to several of my colleagues at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary this week about what I would be saying, and one of them said, "Ah! Is Lull among the liturgists?" He seemed surprised These colleagues wondered if you knew, for example, that I describe myself as a recovering evangelical catholic, or if you would know that I have the reputation in my congregation as being "the great complainer" about matters like the length of service, the fact that we …

Early British Espionage Fiction And The Differentiation Of Clandestine Realities: A Study In The Paradox Of The Protagonist’S Motivation In Erskine Childer’S The Riddle Of The Sands, Joseph Conrad’S The Secret Agent, John Buchan’S The Thirty-Nine Steps, And Arthur Conan-Doyle’S The Last Bow, Hans-Jörg Grohmann Jan 1997

Early British Espionage Fiction And The Differentiation Of Clandestine Realities: A Study In The Paradox Of The Protagonist’S Motivation In Erskine Childer’S The Riddle Of The Sands, Joseph Conrad’S The Secret Agent, John Buchan’S The Thirty-Nine Steps, And Arthur Conan-Doyle’S The Last Bow, Hans-Jörg Grohmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis offers a phenomenological approach to four examples of early British espionage fiction; by discussing the experiences of four protagonists with their perceptions of reality, the study also gives a reconsideration to the literary essence of the figure of the spy of early British espionage stories. In attempting the combination of phenomenology and espionage fiction, the thesis first of all reviews the canon of criticism on British espionage fiction in general. This review criticizes the dilemma of preceding scholarly contributions, focusing on their general ignorance of the early phase of espionage fiction, which was due to the comparison between …

A Critical Study Of Carl F. H. Henry's Portrayal Of The Human Role In Revelation And Inspiration, Boxter Kharbteng Jan 1997

A Critical Study Of Carl F. H. Henry's Portrayal Of The Human Role In Revelation And Inspiration, Boxter Kharbteng

Dissertations

This dissertation investigated Carl F. H. Henry's portrayal of the human role in his doctrines of revelation and inspiration. The study queried whether his depiction of that role in revelation is harmonious or consistent with the one given in inspiration. This question arises from a consideration of Henry's own formulation of his doctrines of revelation, inspiration, and man. The thesis of this dissertation is that inasmuch as man has the innate ability to receive, understand, and impart revelation without divine help, he should likewise be expected to exercise that ability at the level of inspiration without detailed or comprehensive superintendence …

Aristotle's Account Of The Virtue Of Courage In Nicomachean Ethics Iii.6-9, Howard J. Curzer Dec 1996

Aristotle's Account Of The Virtue Of Courage In Nicomachean Ethics Iii.6-9, Howard J. Curzer

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle's account of courage exhibits several general principles of his architectonic. First, Aristotle applies to courage what I have called the doctrine of disjoint spheres. (1) Each virtue has its own sphere completely separate from the spheres of all other virtues. Aristotle then goes on to narrow the sphere of courage by insisting correctly that courage governs only situations involving both fear and confidence. Aristotle does not make the mistake of further restricting courage to life-threatening situations. Like his accounts of other virtues, Aristotle's account of courage involves several different parameters. (2) Each virtue is a disposition for getting all …

The U.S. Government's Investigation Of E.B. Stahlman As An Enemy Alien: A Case Study Of Nativism In Nashville, Robert O'Brien Dec 1996

The U.S. Government's Investigation Of E.B. Stahlman As An Enemy Alien: A Case Study Of Nativism In Nashville, Robert O'Brien

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As a railroad executive for the Louisville and Nashville and then publisher for the Nashville Banner, Edward Bushrod Stahlman, a German immigrant, made many enemies. Stahlman's constant feuding with Luke Lea, who owned the rival Nashville Tennessean, led to an investigation of his citizenship during World War I. Hatred of Germans was at a fever pitch and not only did the Department of Justice examine Stahlman, who actually had been naturalized as a child, but the Tennessean also accused him of being a German propagandist. This thesis serves as an example of the scrutiny German-Americans underwent during the war. Organizations …
