The January 1937 Flood In The Ohio Valley And Its Impact On The Tri-State Area, Paula Tammie Click Jan 1982

The January 1937 Flood In The Ohio Valley And Its Impact On The Tri-State Area, Paula Tammie Click

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation. In this paper, the writer intends to concentrate on the effects of the flood on the cities of Ashland, Kentucky, Huntington, West Virginia and …

Emerging From Women's Studies: A New World View And A New Goal For Educators, Nancy Topping Bazin

Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications

A new world view, emerging from the women's movement and women's studies, emphasizes the interdependence of all people and the interdependence of people and nature. This feminist world view could provide the philosophical framework necessary for transforming the curriculum to help bring about greater social, economic, and political equality and greater respect for life.

Distortion As A Means Of Reassessment: Marguerite De Navarre's Heptameron And The "Querelle Des Femmes", Deborah N. Losse Jan 1982

Distortion As A Means Of Reassessment: Marguerite De Navarre's Heptameron And The "Querelle Des Femmes", Deborah N. Losse

Quidditas

The crisis of sexual assault, with its many psychological implications, occupies a significant place in the narrative of Marguerite de Navarre's Heptaméron, composed in the first half of the sixteenth century at the height of the "Querelle des Femmes." If the storytellers conclude that parfaite amitié is with few exceptions inaccessible, it is in the scenes of sexual aggression that one witnesses the ascendancy of human passion over the formalized code of courtly love.

Siva's Dance: A Choreographic Thesis, Kathleen L. Smith Jan 1982

Siva's Dance: A Choreographic Thesis, Kathleen L. Smith

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Siva's Dance was a project which had been in various developmental stages for many years. The work symbolized movement in the universe through the cycles of creation and destruction; where life and death give birth to one another. Siva represented the continuing thread which weaves the years and cycles together. My choreographic intention was to thread small segments together to create an ongoing and evolutionary process. None of these segments vas meant as a complete statement, rather each was a compacted and cryptic piece to be seen as a color, or word added to the whole. The wide chronological spans …

Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn Dec 1981

Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt)

An editorial in a recent issue of Time magazine notes that the real failures of the past decade have been future planners. Changing scripture slightly, the editorial states: The decade just ended left behind a great many fresh reminders of why prophets have always had difficulty winning honor on their own turf. 1 The decade just ended differed radically from the social, political and economic predictions made for it. The consequence of such failure is that only the fool plays the prophet in the 1980's. So, taking a lesson from the secular sphere, you will understand why I will …
