The Vanguard (Vol. 29, No. 2), Mar 1982, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

"The National Indian Lutheran Board has finished another busy and very productive year of operation. During this last year our involvement has continued in terms of promoting positive national policy, work with different Lutheran constituencies, participating with other ethnic groups, continuation of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) grant program, and working as a co-worker with other national Indian organizations.''

That's how Paul Schultz began his annual president's report to the NILB board. More than two dozen board members and consultants attended the three day meeting at Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, AZ.

Black Elk Speaks As Epic And Ritual Attempt To Reverse History, Paul A. Olson Jan 1982

Black Elk Speaks As Epic And Ritual Attempt To Reverse History, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Modern Siouan storytellers make a distinction in speaking of the difference between bedtime and sacred stories. Moreover, Lakota masters of the sacred arts are inveterate constructors of figural or allegorical systems. They interpret, apply, and reapply the iconological resources of their culture through ritual, myth, storytelling, symbolic action, and clothing. This Sioux symbolic tradition is one context in which John G. Neihardt's Black Elk Speaks (1932) must be understood. Conceptualizing it as an epic may assist both Western and non-Western readers to clarify the uses to which a culture's symbol system may be put in mediating conflicting values, especially those …

The Oxford Vegetarians- A Personal Account, Peter Singer

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

Peter Singer describes his encounters with a small group of vegetarians at Oxford University from 1969 to 1971 and some of the developments launched by those encounters with fellow philosophy students, including Richard Keshen, John Harris, and Roslind and Stanley Godlovitch. Others in Oxford at the time included philosopher Stephen Clark, theologian Andrew Linzey, and psychologist Richard Ryder. Members of the group have produced several landmark publications addressing the moral status of animals, including the initial volume, Animals, Men and Morals (edited by the Godlovitches and John Harris and published in 1971), Singer’s landmark volume, Animal Liberation in 1975, …

Intrusions Of A Parvenu: Science, Religion, And The New Biology, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1982

Intrusions Of A Parvenu: Science, Religion, And The New Biology, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Both religion and the law must seriously consider artificial insemination so that dogma and laws are formed to incorporate the process. Science has brought the procedure to a society unequipped to deal with the religious and legal implications of birth through artificial insemination in any of its forms. Not all religions or jurisdictions can be expected to treat the process exactly alike, but there must be an effort on the part of each organization to react to the situation facing them so that their citizens will have some guidance.

Section II of this article illuminates the path science is on …

The Promise Of Abundant Life: Patenting A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1982

The Promise Of Abundant Life: Patenting A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The purpose of this essay will be to explore the parameters of the scientific imperative to explore truth. The scope of this inquiry is shaped in part by the United States patent laws and administrative interpretations and, more specifically, by the United States Supreme Court in its recent holding allowing the new forms of life created in a laboratory to be patented. The ultimate purpose of this piece, then, is to refute the arrogance of power theory expressed as being implicit in the investigations of the vast potential for the positive achievement of good through harnessing the "New Biology." Thus, …

Abortion And The Good Samaritan, William J. Prior Jan 1982

Abortion And The Good Samaritan, William J. Prior

Philosophy

The problem of abortion is surely the most important issue in biomedical ethics today. Both the popular and the philosophical debate on this question have emphasized the rights of the parties involved, and the issue has been portrayed as one of "rights in conflict" -the right of the fetus to life at odds with the rights of the pregnant woman to privacy, control of her body, and self-determination. This emphasis on questions of rights has been unfortunate, for two reasons. First, it has resulted in a polarization of the disputants into two camps, which has led in turn to an …

A Study Of The Views Of Major Eighteenth Century Evangelicals On Slavery And Race, With Special Reference To John Wesley, Irv A. Brendlinger Jan 1982

A Study Of The Views Of Major Eighteenth Century Evangelicals On Slavery And Race, With Special Reference To John Wesley, Irv A. Brendlinger

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The rise of the British antislavery movement was the result of a complex interplay of a number of influences and factors. One of these factors was the resurgence of evangelical Christianity in the mid-eighteenth century. All of the eighteenth century antislavery leaders were committed churchmen ; most of them were staunch Evangelicals. It is the purpose of this study to examine selected specific attitudes and motives of the most significant antislavery leaders.

The first part of the thesis deals with William Wilberforce, John Newton , Thomas Clarkson James Ramsay, Granville Sharp, Anthony Benezet and John Wesley, exploring the following issues: …
