Predicting The Suitable Habitats Of Alosimus Marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) And Evaluating Its Potential Distribution In Relation To Geographical And Climatic Barriers, Muhammed Ari̇f Demi̇r, Mahmut Kabalak Mar 2025

Predicting The Suitable Habitats Of Alosimus Marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) And Evaluating Its Potential Distribution In Relation To Geographical And Climatic Barriers, Muhammed Ari̇f Demi̇r, Mahmut Kabalak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The main objective of this study was to predict the ecological requirements of Alosimus marginicollis (Haag-Rutenberg, 1880), for which limited ecological information is available, and to predict possible suitable habitats under current conditions and different future scenarios. An ensemble model-based approach, combining multiple algorithms (GAM, GLM, MARS, MaxEnt), was used to predict suitable habitats for this species using bioclimatic, topographic and land cover variables. The models indicated that the elevation variable among the topography variables, BIO15 (precipitation seasonality) and BIO4 (temperature seasonality) among the bioclimatic variables, and the cropland variable (cultivated and managed vegetation cover) among the land cover variables …

Did Raja Asterias Ever Occur In The Sea Of Marmara Or Were Previous Records Just Cases Of Misidentified Raja Clavata?, Hakan Kabasakal, Uğur Uzer, Fi̇rdes Saadet Karakulak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The current inventories of elasmobranchs in the Sea of Marmara have some taxonomic problems that need to be solved. One problematic species in the elasmobranch fauna of the region is Raja clavata Linnaeus, 1758, and atypically coloured specimens of this skate species may have been misidentified in the past as congeners or closely related species. The present results show that R. asterias may be a misidentified species of the family Rajidae due to confusion with the atypically coloured R. clavata. As taxonomy is central to the integration of data sources in the context of biodiversity research and management of any …

Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad Mar 2025

Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad

JWU Dissertations & Theses

The pursuit of gender equality in the Caribbean and Latin America is a significant issue, as indicated by the 2022 Global Gender Disparity Report, which projects that, at its current pace, it will require 132 years to eliminate gender inequality globally. Given the historical male dominance in the transport and logistics sector, the purpose of this study was to explore Guyanese women's experiences in this male-dominated industry (Ng & Acker, 2020). Incorporated into this research was Eagly's (1978) Social Role Theory to analyze how societal roles and physical distinctions influence gender inequalities and the entrenched norms that shape women's roles. …

Icos-Expressing Car-T Cells Mediate Durable Eradication Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer And Metastasis, Shelley Herbrich, Mehdi Chaib, Padmanee Sharma

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains one of the most aggressive and therapeutically challenging breast cancer subtypes. In their recent study, Cao et al introduced a B7H3-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell with constitutive inducible co-stimulator (ICOS) expression (ICOS-B7H3-CAR-T), which demonstrated eradication of TNBC, including metastases, in preclinical models. These CAR-T cells exploit the expression of ICOS ligand on TNBC cells, enhancing antitumor cytotoxicity through ICOS signaling. Compared with conventional B7H3-CAR-T cells, the ICOS-B7H3-CAR-T cells exhibited superior antitumor efficacy, increased cytokine secretion, and prolonged survival in xenograft murine models. This study highlights ICOS as a promising co-stimulatory molecule for improving CAR-T …

Recurrent pregnancy loss, characterized by two or more failed clinical pregnancies, poses a significant challenge to reproductive health. In addition to embryo quality and endometrial function, proper oviduct function is also essential for successful pregnancy establishment. Therefore, structural abnormalities or inflammation resulting from infection in the oviduct may impede the transport of embryos to the endometrium, thereby increasing the risk of miscarriage. However, our understanding of the biological processes that preserve the oviductal cellular structure and functional integrity is limited. Here, we report that autophagy-related protein ATG14 plays a crucial role in maintaining the cellular integrity of the oviduct by …

Mistargeted Retinal Axons Induce A Synaptically Independent Subcircuit In The Visual Thalamus Of Albino Mice, Sean Mccracken, Liam Mccoy, Ziyi Hu, Julie A Hodges, Katia Valkova, Philip R Williams, Josh L Morgan

2020-Current year OA Pubs

In albino mice and EphB1 knockout mice, mistargeted retinal ganglion cell axons form dense islands of axon terminals in the dorsal lateral geniculate nuclei (dLGN). The formation of these islands of retinal input depends on developmental patterns of spontaneous retinal activity. We reconstructed the microcircuitry of the activity-dependent islands and found that the boundaries of the island represent a remarkably strong segregation within retinogeniculate connectivity. We conclude that when sets of retinal input are established in the wrong part of the dLGN, the developing circuitry responds by forming a synaptically isolated subcircuit within the otherwise fully connected network. The fact …

Gamifying Anatomy Outreach: An Underexplored Opportunity, Mikaela L. Stiver, Aamna Naveed, John Chilton, Siobhan M. Moyes Mar 2025

Gamifying Anatomy Outreach: An Underexplored Opportunity, Mikaela L. Stiver, Aamna Naveed, John Chilton, Siobhan M. Moyes

Peninsula Medical School

This article explores the underutilized potential of incorporating gamified approaches into anatomy outreach initiatives. While gamification and game-based learning approaches have been widely adopted in formal educational settings, there is a surprising lack of research on their application for community-based public engagement with anatomy. We emphasize the importance of involving community partners from the outset to co-design gamified outreach activities. A collaborative approach tailors the final products to the needs, preferences, and resources of the target audiences. By actively involving end users, co-design fosters a sense of ownership, relevance, and long-term sustainability for the educational resources. This article also presents …

Impact Of Vascular Geometry On Thrombosis In Pediatric Patients With Modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Shunt: A Pilot Study, Ethan Penn, Yi Qiao, Kimsey Platten, Scott M Bugenhagen, Ram Rohatgi, Jacob R Miller, Jiaxiao Fang, Kelsey Mercer, Blaire Kulp, Jinli Wang, Guy M Genin, David Bark, Edon J Rabinowitz

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Thrombosis in modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas shunts (mBTTS) poses a life-threatening risk for infants with shunt-dependent congenital heart disease. Although hemodynamics influence thrombosis, the specific geometric contributors remain unclear. This study aimed to identify key variables to inform future hemodynamic analysis, hypothesizing that brachiocephalic, subclavian artery, mBTTS, and/or pulmonary artery (PA) geometry play a critical role in clot formation.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed 11 infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who underwent mBTTS placement. Using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, we generated 3-dimensional models of the shunt and surrounding vasculature. Geometric variables related to shunt positioning and vascular …

“Burned At The Stake”: Unpacking Disinformation In The Story Of A Coach Allegedly “Terminated” For Expressing Anti-Transgender Women Athlete Beliefs, Ellen J. Staurowsky

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

On August 29, 2023, a video testimony entitled ‘Burned at the Stake’: One NCAA Coach’s Battle to Protect Women’s Sport was released. The film was part of a “female athlete storytelling series” developed and funded by the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) designed to support the IWF’s stated agenda to “fight to save women’s sports and counter the radical agenda that seeks to erase women” by allowing transgender girls and women on teams that match their identities. The central figure in the video is Kim Russell, then head women’s lacrosse coach at NCAA Division III Oberlin College, who claimed her right …

Lichen Diversity In Portland Metro Area, Nora Dunkirk Mar 2025

Lichen Diversity In Portland Metro Area, Nora Dunkirk

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

Lichens are keystone species ubiquitous around the world. Lichens are important air quality indicators across urban and natural ecosystems. The biodiversity of lichens can be great, but as species sensitive to air-pollution, the biodiversity in urban ecosystems does not always match the biodiversity of surrounding natural areas. For this work I used the citizen science tool iNaturalist to compile a list of the most frequently observed lichen species in the Portland-Vancouver Metro Region. Public tools like iNaturalist make lichen surveys accessible to more people. I present details about how to identify the five most frequently observed lichen species, and summary …

Northern Red-Legged Frog Use Of A New Under-Road Crossing And Adjacent Upland Habitat, Alyson W. Yates, Catherine De Rivera Mar 2025

Northern Red-Legged Frog Use Of A New Under-Road Crossing And Adjacent Upland Habitat, Alyson W. Yates, Catherine De Rivera

Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver

A population of northern red-legged frogs (Rana aurora) located in northwest Portland must make a perilous crossing over U.S. Hwy 30 to access their breeding habitat in the floodplain of the Willamette River. To address the significant frog mortality that has historically resulted from this seasonal crossing, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife managed the installation of an under-road crossing structure, completed in October 2024. To date, no studies have documented the effectiveness of crossing structures installed for R. aurora use, and few studies have examined their effectiveness for amphibians after installation. To meet these needs, our research will …
