Television And The Integration Of Europe In The Era Of Satellite Communications, John Erick Roos Apr 1988

Television And The Integration Of Europe In The Era Of Satellite Communications, John Erick Roos

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The role television played in the integration of Europe through 1987 is examined in an analysis focusing on historical trends, integration theory, and the effect of satellite technology on the political environment in Europe. Television remained under the jurisdiction of national governments since its inception, satellite communications challenged the system of national control of television and changed television's role in Europe by introducing a revolutionary new delivery system. Integration theorists are cited to define the integration process and provide a foundation for a study of television's impact on European integration. Television policies in each nation are examined to document their …

Viewers' Reactions To Ordinary People In Television News Events, Janice R. Kidd Jan 1988

Viewers' Reactions To Ordinary People In Television News Events, Janice R. Kidd

Masters Theses

Viewers' Reactions to Ordinary People in Television News Events examines two hypotheses relating to respondents' reactions to viewing violent events or the likelihood of violent death as portrayed on the major news networks. Research centers on reactions of viewers to ordinary people caught in extraordinary news events. Results of two free-flow written exercises are discussed.

Research excludes reactions to viewing those in the news, such as police personnel, soldiers etc., whose lives might be expected to be involved in violent or dangerous events.

Influences Of Pre-Columbian Art In The Work Of Eduardo RamíRez Villamizar, June-Marie Lam Oct 1987

Influences Of Pre-Columbian Art In The Work Of Eduardo RamíRez Villamizar, June-Marie Lam

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar is a twentieth century Colombian sculptor who is, like many of his contemporaries, intent on the creation of art that is particularly Latin American in character. In pursuit of this goal, he relies on an innate spirituality and on inspiration from his visual memory. His work demonstrates an unconscious bond with artists of the Pre-Columbian societies and shows a recognized appreciation of their techniques of visual expression.

An overview of Pre-Columbian art and culture, as well as a review of the development of Latin American art with special emphasis on the art of Colombia, provide a basis …

Marsh Art Gallery, University of Richmond Museums

Introduction

The Marsh Gallery takes pride in opening its 1987-88 season with the first Virginia exhibition of paintings and drawings by Janet Fish, acknowledged master of the contemporary still life according to art critic Gerrit Henry.

While this exhibition is intended to emphasize her current work it is also slightly retrospective, including work dating from 1975 to 1987, so that the viewer will understand the progression as well as the increasing depth of the artist's oeuvre.

Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department

Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Beowulf For Modern Man: Orality And Literacy And The Anglo-Saxon Heroic Poem, Mark David Nevins May 1986

Beowulf For Modern Man: Orality And Literacy And The Anglo-Saxon Heroic Poem, Mark David Nevins

Fenwick Scholar Program

My goal in this thesis is to show the difference of interpretation between a reading of the Old English poem Beowulf as the work of an oral performer and a reading of it as the work of a literate author. Given the premises set down by intensive study of oral composition of poetry, and given all the literate arguments for interpreting the poem, I would like to show that Beowulf can still be read as an oral poem, and that such a reading may result in an understanding of the poem that is at least as good, if not more …

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette Jan 1985

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder Mar 1984

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder

Honors Theses

This Honors thesis sets out to examine some significant aspects of corporate trademark design. The thesis will provide an analysis of a corporate trademark program, focusing on the recent trademark change by The Krystal Company. I wish to point out early in the paper that certain features of Krystal's design program, such as uniform, package, and architectural design were reviewed only briefly. This restriction was necessary to keep the research from becoming too vast and losing sight of the main objective of trademark design. The thesis consists of three main parts: a) The principles of design and graphic design, b) …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Feb 1983

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

The Effects Of Training In Visual Cognitive Skills On Reading Comprehension, Valerie Joan Croll Jan 1983

The Effects Of Training In Visual Cognitive Skills On Reading Comprehension, Valerie Joan Croll

Masters Theses

In an effort to design learning materials which de-emphasize the decoding process, and concentrate instead upon cognitive and critical thinking processes, picture study has been chosen as a potentially effective vehicle for providing delivery of programs for remediation of reading problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of training in visual cognitive skills as an alternative remedial technique for increasing the reading comprehension of children whose reading skills are considered to be lower than expected due to a learning disability. The population was a group of children in grades four, five, and six (n=34) in a …
