Ancient Andean Headgear: Medium And Measure Of Cultural Identity, Niki R. Clark, Amy Oakland Rodman Jan 1994

Ancient Andean Headgear: Medium And Measure Of Cultural Identity, Niki R. Clark, Amy Oakland Rodman

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

From the earliest recorded periods of southern Andean history, distinctive clothing styles have served to identity specific socio-cultural groups and provide clues about cultural origins. Unique environmental conditions, especially present along the arid Pacific coast of South America, have allowed the preservation of a vast archive of usually perishable material. From the far south coast of Peru to the northern desert regions of Chile, textiles, and especially headgear forms were worn to distinguish between the diverse populations who established permanent settlements along the narrow river valleys linking highland regions and the coast.

The south central Andes region has always known …

Perceptions In Color And Light, Judith Ann Richardson Jan 1994

Perceptions In Color And Light, Judith Ann Richardson

Theses

An artist creates to communicate ideas with others. Creating art involves study, practice and perception. The media and materials used and the particular style of the artist are all integral to the discussion of art. While an analytical approach is necessary in any evaluation of art, just as important is the intuitive nature of the work.

The manner in which the artists perceives the world is a powerful instrument in his/her creations. Perception involves not merely the eyes, but all of the senses, as well as the intellect and the soul. This culminating project is the result of my intuitive, …

The goddess image in art reflects a change in the spirituality of contemporary times.

Barbara Stanwyck: Uncommon Heroine, Sandra Schackel Apr 1993

Barbara Stanwyck: Uncommon Heroine, Sandra Schackel

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

"Barbara Stanwyck, an intrepid citizen who has shown no fear of man, terrain, or scripts over a long and illustrious career, is tackling all three in Cattle Queen of Montana," reported the New York Times when the film opened in that city in 1954.1 Thirty years into her movie career, Stanwyck indeed had demonstrated her ability in more than eighty roles by the late 1950s. Nominated for four Academy Awards in her career, none of them for Westerns, Stanwyck professed to love that genre best; she starred in ten Western movies during the 1940s and 1950s.2 In these …

Infographics And Annual Reports For Nonprofit Organizations, John R. Hall May 1992

Infographics And Annual Reports For Nonprofit Organizations, John R. Hall

Graphic Communication

In recent years, the readership of annual reports has been steadily declining. Nonprofit organizations are investigating new solutions to refresh their reports and make them more appealing. The purpose of this study was to test whether or not infographics is a more effective way for nonprofit organizations to present their annual reports than traditional means.

The study investigated possible causes for the diminishing readership of annual reports and how to best address those causes. Shortening attention spans and people’s desire for briefer engagements points to the advantages of infographics. Over a hundred surveys were conducted where people were shown a …

Bukhara: Traditional Weavings From Pre-Soviet Central Asia, Carol Bier Jan 1992

Bukhara: Traditional Weavings From Pre-Soviet Central Asia, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

In southern regions of what was the Soviet Union lie five independent republics, the populations of which are predominantly Turkic: Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. During the course of the past fifty years, each of these areas has seen increasing industrialization as part of the centralized planning of the Soviet economy. Today, throughout the region. privatization of industry is rapidly occuring. Accompanying these new developments, and as part of the political and economic changes of the last few years, there has been an increasing awareness of ethnic identity and cultural inheritance. This may be expressed through literary and intellectual …

A Kurdish Reed Screen, Carol Bier Jan 1992

A Kurdish Reed Screen, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

A unique ethnographic monument recently donated to The Textile Museum merits special attention not only for its size (twenty-five feet long and four feet high), but for its important place in the history, use, construction, and decoration of functional textiles.

Designed to enclose space in a nomadic environment. the reed screen may be considered an architectural textile destined for use within the community in which it was made. This distinguishes it from commercial products manufactured for the market, and, indeed, from most other utilitarian textiles, although it shares with carpets and kilims an obvious intent to beautify the environment for …

The Nwagu Aneke Igbo Script: Its Origins, Features And Potentials As A Medium Of Alternative Literacy In African Languages, Chukwuma Azuonye

Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series

The present paper is a study of the origins, features and significance of the Nwagu Aneke Igbo Syllabary (otherwise known as the Umuleri Igbo Script), one of the thirty or so indigenous systems of writing which (re-)emerged in West Africa during the colonial period as a medium for challenging alien cultural values and for the re-assertion of the superiority of African spiritual and moral traditions and of the thought-patterns which lie behind them. Beyond the claims of a one-time prosperous land-owner and diviner, the late Ogbuevi Nwagu Aneke of the village of Umuleri in the Anambra Local Government Area of …

How Actualities Affect The Credibility And Audience Evaluation Of Radio Newscasts, Michael G. Bradd Jan 1992

How Actualities Affect The Credibility And Audience Evaluation Of Radio Newscasts, Michael G. Bradd

Masters Theses

This study tests the hypotheses that actualities increase the audience appeal and credibility of a radio newscast. Two treatment newscasts of identical content were produced using the same announcer. One of the treatments used actualities in four of the seven stories while the other treatment had no actualities. Analysis of variance was used to compare subjects' evaluations of the two treatments. The study found that contrary to common wisdom in the radio industry, actualities have no statistically significant impact on the audience appeal of a newscast. The data did not confirm the credibility hypothesis; it strongly suggested that actualities do …

Graphic Design: Eastern And Western Design Elements In Visual Communication, Li-Ying Bao Jan 1992

Graphic Design: Eastern And Western Design Elements In Visual Communication, Li-Ying Bao

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

To pursue the combination of Eastern and Western aesthetics in visual communication, I came to study in the United States from China. As a graphic designer, the juxtaposition of my Chinese and American education and working experiences enable me to perceive and approach design works cross-culturally. My thesis is the continuous exploration of the affinity between Eastern and Western design elements in visual communication. In my design works, my intention is to combine the traditional Eastern design methodology, modern Western technology, and contemporary design theories to such an extent that these design elements could enrich each other and produce unique …

Visual Communication Through Illustration, Osie L. Johnson Jan 1992

Visual Communication Through Illustration, Osie L. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The images I create are visual interpretations of various literal and non-literal subject matter. They are intended as vehicles for communication, and the expressive content is very important for creating an interaction between the piece and the viewer. In many cases, the message itself, which is derived from one or many ideas combined visually, is of greater importance than the initial intent and finished outcome. Some of the images are simply "constructions" for the sole purpose of experimenting with technical and compositional concerns, with the subject matter serving a minimal role. The greater number of the illustrations focus on technique …

An Art Therapy Program For Women Who Are Chemically Dependent And/Or Victims Of Domestic Violence: A Training Manual, Mary H. Cook Jan 1990

An Art Therapy Program For Women Who Are Chemically Dependent And/Or Victims Of Domestic Violence: A Training Manual, Mary H. Cook

Theses

Women who are chemically dependent and/or victims of domestic violence have difficulty identifying and expressing feelings. One of the most important aspects of recovery is learning to feel again and to talk a bout feelings.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the therapist utilizes visual expression as a means of communication. The most common traits of these clients are low self-esteem, depression, anger, and a sense of helplessness . By making the issues symbolic, art therapy facilitates communication and reduces confusion.

This study presents an overview of art therapy, and a training manual is included for therapists …

Masks: A Viable Option For The Modern Stage, L. Arlene Chapman Jan 1990

Masks: A Viable Option For The Modern Stage, L. Arlene Chapman

Theses

It is the position of this paper that masks have a viable place on the stage today. As we look at the historical usage and at the present views of masks, we will see the mystical effect of masks has not changed. Although our technology has improved, masks still create a mystical illusion for the audience and for the actor. Learning of the many techniques and approaches to mask-making has been a delightful experience. I must thank Niki Juncker for the many times she has cleared my muddled thinking. Without her guidance I am sure this project would not have …

Science/Technology/Abstraction: Art At The End Of The Decade, Wright State University Art Galleries Apr 1989

Science/Technology/Abstraction: Art At The End Of The Decade, Wright State University Art Galleries

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

Science and technology are two dominant art themes that have been weaving their way through the 1980s. This show makes that point very strongly, but in doing so it does not I intend to show every work of art that has used scientific or technological subject matter, or has been hooked up to an electric outlet during this I decade. That would be both I indiscriminate and unrewarding. What this exhibition does set out to do is give enough breadth of focus to the subject to make it understandable that many artists in the past few years have been using …
