Post-Pandemic Era: Evaluation Of Quality Of Life And Usability Testing For Elderly Rehabilitation App Design, Bo Liu, Yang-Cheng Lin, Wei-Ni Hsu, Cai-Ying Cheng, Yen-Chiech Kuo
IASDR Conference Series
Countries worldwide are experiencing shifts in their population structures. Aging has a significant impact on healthcare and elderly care provision. COVID-19 indirectly promoted the development of telemedicine and smart healthcare industries. Numerous intelligent software has been designed to enable elderly individuals to live independently. However, elderly individuals face physical challenges when using advanced technological products. Therefore, paying attention to their needs and user experiences during the design and development stages is essential. In this study, we designed and developed a game-based rehabilitation app (Formosa Explore). We integrated the concept of gamified rehabilitation into the lives of community-dwelling elderly individuals and …

Designing Therapeutic And Social Spaces For Older Adults Facing Mild Cognitive Impairment: Priorities In Spatial And Furniture Layout, Valentina Da Rosa, Machry Herminia, Leandro M. Tonetto
IASDR Conference Series
Mild Cognitive impairment (MCI) is the stage between healthy cognitive functioning and Dementia, in which individuals still live independently at home but develop difficulties related to memory, executive functioning, and decision-making. MCI is mainly managed with therapeutic activities such as physical exercise, cognitive training, nutrition, and occupational therapies. While individuals living with MCI tend to isolate themselves, social interactions are known for their potential to slow or interrupt cognitive decline, being an important therapeutic component for MCI. Previous studies show how the built environment affects social interactions for Dementia patients living in residential care facilities, specifically through the layout of …
Convergence Research And Participatory Design Of A Study Furniture System For Small Living Environments, Tulio Maximo, Chi Hang Paul Lo, Wen Zhan
Convergence Research And Participatory Design Of A Study Furniture System For Small Living Environments, Tulio Maximo, Chi Hang Paul Lo, Wen Zhan
IASDR Conference Series
With limited space, lack of natural lighting and restrictive internal layout, children living in subdivided units and other similar small living spaces are often left with no choice but to study, play and sleep on the bed for a prolonged period. Such environmental conditions often damage children’s development, particularly their eyesight, muscles, and bones, and harm their concentration, self-worth, and, thus, academic attainment. Early interventions are of the utmost urgency. This project adopted continued convergence research collaboration and participatory design to understand critical issues and develop and test interventions to improve the studying environment of children living in subdivided units …
Domestic Infrastructure Of Food: Thoughts On Community Engagement Through Food, Furniture, And Architectural Exhibition, Leyuan Li
IASDR Conference Series
Over the past decades, the attention towards fresh food ingredients has promoted the emergence of growing vegetables in domestic spaces and sharing homemade ingredients with neighbors. The introduction of producing and exchanging food in domestic territories not only creates new forms of recreation, but also foregrounds inhabitants' anxieties concerning food security and community engagement, especially amidst global unrest during the pandemic. Within this imperative context, the pictorial essay intends to introduce food as a collective medium and a social act. By showing a series of representations and photographs of an installation project, the essay speculates on the performative and spatial …
Eat, Taste, Know – Reflections On Sarah Worth’S Taste: A Philosophy Of Food, Deborah Knight
Eat, Taste, Know – Reflections On Sarah Worth’S Taste: A Philosophy Of Food, Deborah Knight
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Sarah Worth argues that philosophy should take gustatory taste seriously. While taste has played a central role in philosophical aesthetics, “aesthetic taste” is a trope referring to our judgments about the value or merit of an object, typically a work of art. What, then, about the literal sense of taste — the perception of flavor when we have something like food or drink in our mouths? Because our wide range of gustatory experiences and the kinds of judgments we make about them are so intimately connected to the kinds of things we eat, I look at fast food versus slow …
Taste: A Philosophy Of Food, Sarah Worth
Taste: A Philosophy Of Food, Sarah Worth
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
This book has been such a labor of love for me; I cannot thank my commentators enough for taking this work seriously and giving such thoughtful feedback. Carolyn Korsmeyer, Deborah Knight, and Alexandra Plakias were willing not only to do an author-meets-critic session but to develop their thoughts further into these papers. I could not receive higher praise as a philosopher than serious consideration. The primary claim of my book is about the ways in which gustatory taste should be taken more seriously, especially as a form of knowledge. I approach this suggestion not from the historical sense of taste …

Islamophobia In India And Its Impact On India’S Foreign Relations, Dylan Morgan
Islamophobia In India And Its Impact On India’S Foreign Relations, Dylan Morgan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
India has a vast history of Islam throughout the subcontinent, beginning over a millennia ago. Throughout this time, developments such as Muslim rule over Hindus, British colonization, the partition to create Pakistan and eventually Bangladesh, as well as the rise of Hindu nationalism throughout India from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have created a dangerous status quo for Muslims in India. Communal, state-sanctioned, violence against Muslims, their businesses, symbols of the religion, and any sort of public display is increasingly common. The impact on India’s international standing, especially with predominantly Muslim countries such as Arabian Gulf countries, Iran, Malaysia, and …

Revolting Motherhood: [De]Generative Breast Stories Transmuting Medical/Moral Paradigms In Britain During The Long Nineteenth Century, Leslie Rene Pearson
Revolting Motherhood: [De]Generative Breast Stories Transmuting Medical/Moral Paradigms In Britain During The Long Nineteenth Century, Leslie Rene Pearson
Theses and Dissertations
Eric Plemons writes in *The Look of A Woman* that “biological stories do more than describe biologies” (54). This dissertation explores what breast cancer stories do and how society creates meaning around the experience of breast cancer. I argue that, in the long nineteenth century in Britain, breast cancer was part of a two-sided medical/moral paradigm where medical diagnosis became enmeshed with morality. Health, then, became a result of proper domestic behavior, disease a result of straying from societal norms. Following the introductory chapter, chapter two traces the development of this paradigm as an outgrowth of the emergence of middle-class …

Host Communities: The Foundation Of Regenerative Tourism, Marie Haley
Host Communities: The Foundation Of Regenerative Tourism, Marie Haley
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
Tourism is a human structure and cannot be equated to natural systems such as farming. While regenerative farming focuses on the health of the natural system starting with the soil, tourism is a human system and must focus on regenerating the human system. This paper argues that the foundation of tourism is the host community. If the host community is vibrant and healthy, dynamic and resilient and has appropriate political systems to manage tourism, tourism will have the social licence and will thrive. Tourism can then have upwardly cascading feedback mechanisms where the host community can restore the natural environment, …

Knit-Mycelium Hybrids: Designing And Scaling Up With Bio Fabrication Systems Based On Mycocrete Injection In 3d Knitted Tubular Formworks, Romy Kaiser, Jane Scott, Martyn Dade-Robertson, Elise Elsacker
Textile Intersections Conference Series
This paper investigates the design potential of monolithically grown Mycelium-based Composites (MBCs) focusing on the integration of 3D knitted formworks within the fabrication process. Mycelium has gained attention as a sustainable, biodegradable, construction material with insulating, and self-healing capabilities. While there have been advancements in MBC, challenges remain in terms of structural complexity, stability, and design control at scale. Recent interest has emerged in digital fabrication methods and mould creation using textile logics and CNC knitting but fabricating mycelium within tubular soft moulds presents a lack of stability and uneven growth distribution. This, however, can be overcome by a novel …

Growing Patterns: Textile Design With Living Pigments, Julia Moser, Karin Fleck, Irene Posch
Textile Intersections Conference Series
A turn towards the development of sustainable textile dyes moved new pigments into the centre of attention – the pigments metabolised by pigment-producing bacteria. In this paper, we present practice-based research that aims at expanding the field of textile dyeing with living bacteria through exploring possibilities for intentional pattern design. Experiments were guided by two research questions: RQ1: How can the use and combination of different textile fibres influence and enable textile pattern development with bacteria? RQ2: How can textile surface manipulation techniques be used for pattern design with living pigments? We show a series of 40 different samples that …
Seaweed Dialogues, Alberte Holmø Bojesen
Seaweed Dialogues, Alberte Holmø Bojesen
Textile Intersections Conference Series
In 2023 it is a well-known fact that seaweed has become part of many theories of how to rebalance our ecosystems. However, it is not a material most people willingly or frequently interact with. Seaweed has in some ways become this abstract “saviour”, but how can we concretely and consciously use something we do not know, have not felt, smelled, or understood? The objective of Seaweed Dialogues is to breach this gap of the unknown, initiating a sensorial dialogue between human and seaweed, posing the question of what seaweed is and can be. This project has transformed into an extensive …

“Go, Then, To The Front As Temperate Men:” The U.S. Army, Temperance Advocacy, And Lessons Learned To 1873, Megan M.S. Nishikawa
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation examines the long history of attempted liquor controls applied within the American army, from pre-revolution to the Civil War, culminating with a close look at the Union’s Army of the Potomac. This work details how the Union’s battle to control the effects of intoxicating liquors and sober up drunk troops from the commencement of hostilities in 1861 to 1865 reflected the historic efforts of the antebellum temperance movement, and describes how the experience of war prepared the next generation of temperance crusaders to rebuild a more profoundly religious, effective, and female driven temperance movement in the post-war decade.
The Zone Of Proximal Development And Content Area Instruction For Middle School English Language Learner Students: A Phenomenological Study, Amy Lundgren
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of middle school content area instructors (CAIs) who teach English language learners (ELLs) in public schools in ELL-heavy districts. The theory guiding this study was Vygotsky’s theory of the zone of proximal development (ZPD), as research studies indicate the ability of ELLs to access content area instruction when teachers effectively scaffold them in their ZPD to use discipline specific literacy strategies. Data were collected using one-on-one interviews with 10 content area teachers in six ELL-heavy public-school districts to participate in the study. Further data collection was completed using …

This study showed increased support through a Music Education Learning Community (MELC). MELCs enhanced the skills and knowledge of music educators, families, and community organizations through collaborative analysis, an exchange of expertise, and frequent dialogue. The focus of this study …
Making Mindfulness More Accessible: A Practical Guide To Trauma-Informed Mindfulness, Leslie Formby
Making Mindfulness More Accessible: A Practical Guide To Trauma-Informed Mindfulness, Leslie Formby
Mindfulness Studies Theses
Mindfulness is currently embedded in a growing understanding of how trauma permeates and adversely impacts peoples’ physical and psychological well-being. Increased awareness of the prevalence of trauma and its harmful effects has led to renewed interest in mindfulness to help manage the challenges generated by the detrimental effects of trauma.
These effects may draw people to mindfulness and, in turn, may make the benefits of mindfulness out of reach. Mindfulness methods and practice adaptations have been found to help trauma survivors experience the benefits of what the Buddha taught. As a support for those engaging in mindfulness and meditation, this …
Grameen Method Of Microfinance As A Poverty-Alleviation Tool: Short And Long-Term Effects On Women’S Empowerment In Egypt, Zeina M. Shalaby
Grameen Method Of Microfinance As A Poverty-Alleviation Tool: Short And Long-Term Effects On Women’S Empowerment In Egypt, Zeina M. Shalaby
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Many people suffer from poverty globally, and economic tools used to combat it have varied from one country to another with some enacting noticeable change. The topic of micro-credit attracted attention after the Grameen Bank’s microfinance method was recognized for decreasing poverty in rural Bangladesh by granting loans to women almost exclusively. This paper explores the application of the Grameen method of microfinance in Egypt by reviewing the specific conditions surrounding women’s poverty in Egypt and the economic and social outcomes of past Grameen microfinance efforts in Egypt. While the Grameen method of microfinance successfully improved well-being indicators and economic …

Posthuman Lessons For Writing And Well-Being: Reparative Practices, Anna A. Larsson
Posthuman Lessons For Writing And Well-Being: Reparative Practices, Anna A. Larsson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The influence of post-humanist interdisciplinary theories on Writing Studies has displaced its conventional preoccupation with the cultivation and management of subjects via First-Year Writing (FYC), to productive but at times artificially divisive ends. This project aims at an inclusive, anti-racist first-year writing ecology through theories of networked consciousness and digital “making.” I reread and recuperate earlier variants of posthumanist writing theory and draw from feminist materialism and mindfulness studies to establish a vision of well-being that I call networked reparative practices. To bring the abstract into the tangible, an often-valued endeavor in a field historically defined by teaching, I introduce …

COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic that affects individuals’ physical and mental health. The aim of this descriptive cross sectional study was to investigate relationships between precautionary practices (washing hands, taking vitamins, and eating a healthy diet) and attitudes about illness related to COVID-19 (worry about illness, concern about pain, hypochondriacal beliefs, thanatophobia, and treatment experience). This study used non-probability sample method to recruit the participants. The study sample was restricted to males who were 18 and older and who lived in Kuwait during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 430 males volunteered to participate in this study. The participants completed …

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Food is vital to human existence, but perspectives about food have altered from food as an intrinsic exigency to food as a pleasurable luxury. This change runs in tandem with the birth and flourish of recipe writing. This paper looks at recipe writing in Arabic, an aspect that has been overlooked despite the ubiquitous nature of food and food preparation in the Arab world. It brings to light the verbal resources employed in Arabic culinary writing, such as the use of a type of modern standard Arabic which tolerates certain features not allowed in the “high” (or literary) variety of …
Around The Table Of Nianyefan: Transformation Of Lu Cuisine, Rituals, And Gender Roles In The Mid And South Of Shandong Since The 1980s, Ximai Shi
Student Theses and Dissertations
Nianyefan (the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve) is an essential part of the celebration of Chinese New Year. This study focuses on the transformation of nianyefan in the middle and south of Shandong during the past four decades with the purpose of discovering and interpreting the interactions with the changing social, political, and economic dynamics since the 1980s. The study found that the reforms since the 1980s have diluted the authentic feel of nianyefan in the middle and south of Shandong, while the culture of nianyefan is not simply passive but actively responds to them. It begins with …
