The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu Nov 2023

The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This paper makes a normative argument about transformations of public health as a necessary condition required in any transitional justice process. We seek to bridge the gap between the fields of genocide and public health to understand the recursive relationship between genocide and the social determinants of health. We show that structures and institutions established during genocide create enduring impacts on the public health outcomes of victim and survivor groups even after the ousting of the original perpetrators. Our comparative analysis of the Rwandan Genocide and the colonial genocide of Indigenous communities in Canada surveys the available public health literature …

Pasta And Politics: A Taste Of Culinary Xenophobia In Italy, Rachel Berns Nov 2023

Pasta And Politics: A Taste Of Culinary Xenophobia In Italy, Rachel Berns

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Italy has become a common “landing country” for many European and Asian immigrants, creating a perception of invasion that has led to cultural reactionism masked in the reinforcement of “traditional cuisine.” For so-called traditional foods to endure, they must continually be reinvented, bearing different meanings and social values throughout time and space while accumulating rich, cultural baggage that serves as a powerful marker of identity in a given society. This project explores the role of traditional cuisine in Italian national identity and pride, and the subsequent historical culinary antagonism maintained in widespread attitudes toward ethnic cuisine in Italy. Through an …

Wisdom Regarding Beauty. Self-Effacement And One's Right Relationship To Beauty, Alexndra Hayes Nov 2023

Wisdom Regarding Beauty. Self-Effacement And One's Right Relationship To Beauty, Alexndra Hayes

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

What does it mean to cultivate aesthetic virtue in a way that contributes to our character? Pursue beauty, not its effect. Many contemporary theories emphasize the great effects of aesthetic life—expertise, individual style, aesthetic community, and so on. Directly pursuing these effects effaces our endeavors. We should instead love beauty itself because it is worthy of love. This love cannot be measured as easily as these effects, though it is characteristically marked by a self-forgetting receptivity and childlike curiosity.

Feasibility And Acceptability Of A Dance Fundamental Movement Skill Intervention For Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety In Children, Juanita Patterson-Price

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety and depression are highly prevalent mental health conditions in children. Rates of both disorders are rising, surpassing the capacity of available treatment services (albertapatients, 2022; Edwardson, 2022; Statistics Canada, 2020). Lack of treatment can often result in worsening of symptoms towards serious long-term effects (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Additional treatment supports must be made available. The goal of this doctoral research is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of genre-inclusive dance as a psychosocial intervention for anxiety and depression in children. The first manuscript of this doctoral work shares lessons learned in a program evaluation using …

Unique Challenges In State Defense Force Chaplaincy, J. Todd Smith Nov 2023

Unique Challenges In State Defense Force Chaplaincy, J. Todd Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

As the impact and effectiveness of traditional ministry wanes in this current culture, the influence of chaplaincy is expanding and making new inroads into numerous fields, including business, sports, health care, and the military. Chaplaincy’s commitment to pluralism and emphasis on spirituality instead of denominationalism makes it the perfect vehicle for ministry to this seemingly secular population still searching for meaning, purpose, and connection. These chaplains must be well trained for these serious moments in time and the lives of individuals. State Defense Forces are the nation’s least-known uniformed service and, therefore, lack the resources and funding of other services …

Food For Thought: Rituals In Place Based Learning, Natalia Pilato

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

In my mother’s kitchen lasting bonds among family, friends, and newcomers are created. Using that space as a point of departure, I explore the significance of pedagogical places outside of classrooms that serve as flavorful ingredients for performative and participatory learning. This article articulates ways in which rituals associated with Sicilian cultural traditions are interwoven and complicit in establishing dispositions for socially engaged learning and teaching in the arts, showing how an ethic of care can transcend generations. With a focus on place-based learning, making art and enjoying food are investigated to show how healthy productive relationships, appreciation for beauty, …

Theses

This thesis explores the Nasca use of plant iconography as part of their polychrome ceramics produced at the end of the Early Horizon around 100 BCE to those produced in the beginning and middle of the Early Intermediate Period circa 1to 450 CE. During this time the religious site of Cahuachi was in use as a pilgrimage center as well as the production center of polychrome pottery. The Nasca created their colorful ceramics here to distribute to visiting pilgrims during times of festival or ritual. The culture’s iconography has been studied extensively, most of which focuses on the forms of …

A Framework For Transparency In Precision Livestock Farming, Kevin C. Elliott, Ian Werkheiser Oct 2023

A Framework For Transparency In Precision Livestock Farming, Kevin C. Elliott, Ian Werkheiser

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Simple Summary

The emergence of precision livestock farming (PLF) raises important issues for many different social groups, including farmers, consumers, regulators, and the food industry. This paper explores how those who develop PLF systems can communicate more effectively with different groups about the technologies that they are creating. We suggest that developers reflect on four issues: (1) the different kinds of information that various groups might want to know; (2) the audiences that might care about these different kinds of information; (3) the major difficulties involved in providing the information; and (4) potential strategies for overcoming those difficulties.

Developing A Child-Friendly Outdoor Public Playground For Children Aged 4-8, Through Co-Creation Mindset, Neda Batenipour Oct 2023

Developing A Child-Friendly Outdoor Public Playground For Children Aged 4-8, Through Co-Creation Mindset, Neda Batenipour

IASDR Conference Series

Outdoor playgrounds, as part of urban space, with their equipment/settings play an important role in child development. For designing a child-friendly playground, looking at a playground through the eyes of children as end users should be of prime importance for designers. This study presents a new framework and methodology for exploring design parameters based on users’ real needs and wants and finally designs a child-friendly outdoor public playground for children aged 4-8 years old. Existing problems, gaps, and opportunities in Wuppertal’s playgrounds – especially in the Nordbahntrasse and Parkour Park area – provide the rationale and need, as well as …

Increasing Preventive Care Through Increased Access To Healthy Foods, Danijela Kaurin, Sarah Syed, Bahra Chabo, Gulad Ali, Adam Sagerman, Santosh Basapur

IASDR Conference Series

Food deserts are areas that lack the availability of fresh, affordable, and nutritious foods. Almost half of the food in the United States of America is wasted every year, yet somehow there are thousands of food deserts. This lack of nutritious food for people of all ages negatively impacts health outcomes as chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are rising quickly. Preventive care is a practice in which patients take the initiative to make healthier choices in life to prevent the onset or progression of chronic illness. An example of such initiatives is eating and preparing more nutritious …

Design-Driven Poverty Alleviation: An Approach That Turns Poverty Alleviation From A Cost Perspective To A Resource Perspective, Yuhui Jin, Peng Xu

IASDR Conference Series

[Background & Challenges] Traditional poverty alleviation is a high-cost matter. In many cases, poverty alleviation is regarded as a ‘cost’ that a society needs to pay. However, the existing practices of Design for Poverty Alleviation still focused more on the application of product design and appearance improvement and had not fully tapped the potential of Design. [Objective] This study aims to use Design at a higher level to turn poverty alleviation from a ‘social cost’ to an ‘innovative resource’. [Method & Outcomes] This paper applies the Action Research method to propose and test the Design-driven Poverty Alleviation (DDPA) Framework, which …

In recent years, more designers have been engaging in transitions for which design activity is used to develop innovations that steer change. However, little is known about how designers develop innovations to foster change along a desired transition path. In this short paper, we explore how designers can develop joint innovations that steer a transition of the Dutch food system to embrace flexibility and cater to enough. We present a new practice called Adaptable Consumption, which aims to realign food safety, quality, and sustainability. Based on our preliminary findings, we discuss how our process inspires reflections on the transition and …

Health and well-being are fundamental aspects of life, directly impacting the quality of life. Hope is a phenomenon that significantly relates to the quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to introduce hope in the context of design for health and well-being. By exploring the intersection of design, health, and hope, we can create outcomes that are not only functional and address immediate needs but also increase resilience and foster a sense of optimism and empowerment to users and communities. We provide reflections on how this elevation in design can cultivate strengthened communities through improved healthcare interventions.

Tracking Acts Of Kindness Through Comics: An Experimental Study, Raven Serenity Glover, Yvette Shen Oct 2023

Tracking Acts Of Kindness Through Comics: An Experimental Study, Raven Serenity Glover, Yvette Shen

IASDR Conference Series

This study explores the effectiveness of using comics as a medium to track personal behavioral data, focusing on acts of kindness. Through a prototype-based examination of digitally assembled comics, the findings demonstrate that comics offer a unique communication method that enables the integration of narrative elements into the flow of behavioral data. Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez Oct 2023

Living Entanglement: Toward An Entangled Design Nexus, Clee Zhuo Wang, Laurent Laurent Gutierrez

IASDR Conference Series

Human-nature encounters more and more take forms of conflict, struggle, resistance and denial. Beneath the surface question of “how to survive”, these encounters reveal “entanglement” as the fundamental condition of the world. This new world view, supported by systems thinking and posthumanism, radicalizes the anthropocentric reductionistic belief. The shift informs a reposition of design from a method to produce (techne) to an invitation to co-becoming (phronesis). This article starts with a cross-disciplinary literature review to elaborate the concept of “entanglement” in three levels: relationality, co-becoming and blurred subject / object division. Then, the field work of an ecoliteracy program (“The …

The Role Of Human-Centred Design In Promoting Understanding Of Local Contexts: A Study Of Japanese Students Addressing Social Issues In Bangladesh, Kenichiro Miyama, Shiro Inoue, Seiko Shirasaka

IASDR Conference Series

When implementing design projects aimed at solving social issues across borders, it is essential to deeply understand the local people and culture. In particular, when enterprises in developed countries deploy services to address social issues in developing countries, the lack of understanding of the local context and biases can become a barrier to sustainable business development. In such a context, a human-centred design approach plays an important role in the process of designing as it facilitates an in-depth understanding of local people and culture. In the context of education, when students in a developed country develop sustainable services and businesses …
