Listening To The City Through Technology: A Low-Tech Perceptive Approach For Shenzhen, Marcel Zaes Sagesser, Bo Dong

IASDR Conference Series

Humans experience urban spaces often through technology, for example when they navigate their ways via an app. The technologies they interact with transform the urban environment into a form of matter made of the screens, earbuds, buttons, PCB boards, and wires that constitute them. The authors propose a practice-based, educational co-design workshop to contrast high-tech smart cities with a low-tech, bot- tom-up urban sensing approach for interacting with the sonic city. They ran a workshop with local young adults in Shenzhen and built simple sound recorders partially from e-waste. Listening to the city on head- phones through wearable low-tech devices, …

The Design Research Of "Tema": Exploring Intentional Acts Of Taking Time And Effort In A Contemporary Society, Tianshuo Lu, Takuma Ishikawa

IASDR Conference Series

In today’s hyper-efficient world, why do people engage in activities that require time and effort? This research explores the causes and meanings of such behaviors through the Japanese concept of “tema”, defined as intentional, non-optimized engagement where the process holds intrinsic value. Using workshops and qualitative interviews, we identify four key elements of “tema”: time, body, creativity, and value. These deliberate actions foster personal meaning, emotional satisfaction, and deeper connection with the material world. Building on these insights, we propose a design potential that applies “tema” as a framework for creative practice. Rather than reinforcing a binary between efficiency and …
