The Cuneiform Tablets At Syracuse University, Marcel Segrist

The Courier

Among its rare book collections, the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University has 489 clay tablets written 4000 years ago. All of these cuneiform tablets, composed in the Sumerian language, are accounting records. Although how the library came to have them is not documented, they seem to have been in the collection for at least a halfcentury, awaiting their rediscovery by Professor David I. Owen, chairman of the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Cornell University. The tablets are being deciphered and copied by the present author, who will publish his work.

This document presents the Cultural Resources Overview for the Harney Area in southeastern Oregon. The Harney Area combines three of the four planning units in the Burns Bureau of Land Management District. Most of the land in the Harney Area is located in Harney County, although a few parcels are just outside the county line in Lake and Malheur Counties. Almost all of Harney County is included. There are approximately 3,320,000 acres of Bureau administered public land within the Harney Area, as well as other public and private lands.

A Petrographic Analysis Of Black Mesa, Arizona Ceramics, Elizabeth M. Garrett

Seven ceramic types from excavated Anasazi sites on Black Mesa were examined petrographically in order: (1) to obtain an accurate description of the geologic tempering m aterial; (2) to determine if specific ceramic types from Black Mesa and the surrounding area share a common area of manufacture; and (3) to compare the tempering material in the ceramics with the mineralogical components in the Wepo and Toreva Formations in order to determine if the ceramic items contain locally available material.

The results of archeological investigations in portions of the George C. Davis Site are presented in this report prepared by Ross Fields and J. Peter Thurmond . Stringent contract requirements and the provisions of Texas Antiquities Permit No. 237 dictate that this report be brief and descriptive in nature. Requirements such as inclusion of a detailed site investigation history and environmental data were excluded and extensive excavations were stressed in preference to detailed analyses and comparisons. The survey area includes a total distance of about two miles extending east and west of the village of Mottville along U.S. 12 in St. Joseph and Cass Counties, Michigan. The village of Mottville is located in St. Joseph County. Three alternates have been proposed by MOOT for widening the approaches and replacing the existing bridge which crosses the St. Joseph River north of Mottville (Fig. 1).

Alternate A involves relocating the bridge to a position north of the present crossing which wo~ld have the effect of straightening the approaches in each direction.

Site 41ZP73 was found to contain significant prehistoric archeological deposits which date to both the Late Archaic and the Late Prehistoric periods. On June 9, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated a reported discovery of human bones where construction is underway at the Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria, Texas.

The Center was informed of the discovery by David Welsh of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, who requested that an investigation be made by qualified persons to assess the bone material and immediate surrounding for the purpose of determining the potential importance of the cultural resource.

The pipeline will extend from the Scurlock Oil Company tank farm about one kilometer southwest of Sabine Pass to a landfall on the Gulf Coast at a point about six kilometers west of Texas Point (Fig. 1).

During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).

Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. The White Walnut Creek research area consists of approximately 1437 ha in eight sections of T5S, R2W, Perry County, Illinois. Physiographically speaking, the study area lies within the southern portion of the till plains region known as the Mt. Vernon Hill Country and is characterized by mature topography as reflected in gentl~ rolling hills and broad alluvial valleys. Floristically, this drainage is part of the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest as defined by Braun (1950).

Archaeological Reports

The 1979 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 79) in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded a total of 74 prehistoric sites which revealed 10 identifiable components. The majority of sites were small lithic scatters which did not yield culturally diagnostic artifacts. In general the results of this field season conformed with expectations based upon soils, landform and drainage patterns in the survey universe. This report describes and evaluates the significance of the archaeologi ca 1 data recovered.
