An Assessment Of Archeological Sites 41wy71 And 41wy72, Willacy County, Texas, D. William Day
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Test excavations at two prehistoric archeological sites in eastern Willacy County, Texas, were conducted by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. during Ma y and July of 1981. The purpose of the investigations at sites 41WY71 and 41WY72 was to assess the potential eligibility of the sites for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. It is concluded that site 41WY71 does not warrant nomination to the Register, but that site 41WY72 is of sufficient importance that it should be considered to be eligible for nomination to the Register.
Current work at these two sites has been accomplished under terms of …

During summer 1980 a program of archaeological survey and testing was carried out by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Anionio, for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at the site of Rancho de las Cabras near Floresville, Texas. The site is reputed to be the livestock ranch of Mission San Fran~isco de la Espada in the late 18th century. Large areas of the site were surveyed to determine if prehistoric sites were present. The limits of the historic occupation were determined through surface survey and shovel testing. Archaeological testing within and adjacent to the …

The irrigation system in San Antonio was an integral part of its early history. Within the San Antonio area irrigation was a necessity to extend the planting season. An extended planting season would allow for diversified crops with different harvesting periods. The first municipal irrigation system was the San Pedro Acequia. It was constructed to serve the town with fresh water for household use and agricultural purposes. As the population increased and technology improved, the acequias changed in both appearance and function. In time, the San Pedro Acequia system became part of San Antonio's forgotten past.
Recently, excavations on the …

In early May 1981, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted test excavations at Mission de la Espada. In an area north of the church, planned for future parking, three test units were excavated to determine the soil stratification and whether construction would impact architectural or cultural features. No indications of such features was found. In an area outside the east wall, where apparent wall foundations appear in aerial photographs, testing revealed that all but a few traces of a structure built in the early 1900s have since been removed.

In October and November of 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted an intensive resource survey and limited testing in an area on either side of the mouth of the Brazos River in Brazoria County, Texas. A history was composed of the project area in relation to that of the Republic and State of Texas. A structural history of the town of Velasco was compiled from archival and historical research. Intensive survey and assessment of the project area resulted in the conclusion that, aside from a few possible subsurface indications at or below …

This survey produced evidence of Middle Archaic to Late Archaic prehistoric sites in the area. Twelve archaeological sites were documented. Five of these sites, located in the proposed mining area, were totally collected and mapped. The other seven sites outside of the proposed mining area were mapped and only those sites with cultural/historical significance were collected. No …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This reconnaissance-level cultural resources survey of 1900 acres in northern Bastrop County, including a small area in Lee County, Texas, was accomplished by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, in July 1980. City Public Service (CPS) of San Antonio has proposed a lignite mining project in the area, and this represents the first attempt to determine the nature of the cultural resources and the problems they might present in developing the lignite deposits. Prehistoric resources in the primary area were scarce and of limited significance, but three sites on the west side of the …

For a number of years, a proposed bypass around the city of LaGrange in Fayette County, Texas, has been in various planning stages with the ultimate objective of diverting highway traffic from the downtown area. Four possible routes have been studied in recent years, and a decision has now been made to proceed with Route A, the closest route to the city along the city's northern boundary (Fig. 1).
The archaeology section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation has been involved in cultural resource surveys along each of the proposed corridors and has located prehistoric archaeological sites …

Six prehistoric sites along the proposed route of U.S. Highway 54 in El Paso County, Texas, were tested during the spring and summer of 1981. No further work is recommended at four of these sites due to the paucity of recovered materials and the general deflated and eroded nature of the sites.
Two sites are recommended for further work. Testing of Site 41EP321 produced two probable pithouse features with buried charcoal lenses and possible post holes as well as numerous varied artifacts including Mimbres Black-on-White, Chupardero Black-on-White, El Paso Brown, and El Paso Polychrome pottery types. During previous surveys of the Choke Canyon Reservoir area in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, Texas, 17 historic sites (structures, refuse areas, cemeteries) had been located and examined. Further work in this area is described in this report and is summarized as follows: Most of the above sites and 5 newly located ones underwent surface collection and 'test excavation. Sites were recorded and the collected artifacts described and classified. Suggested chronology and occupation are correlated with the findings of the historical research study (Everett, Part I of this report). Evidence indicates that the area was most intensively occupied during the …

Two sites in McCulloch County, Texas, Sites 41MK28 and 41MK29, were tested in August, 1981, and were found to have very shallow of surface deposits. Site 41MK28 proved to be a badly eroded surface site. That portion of Site 41MK29 which lay in the proposed right-of-way was found to be already destroyed by previous root plowing and fire lane construction activities. Further excavation is not recommended at either site because of the disturbed nature of the sites and the lack of depth to the deposits.

Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions where inheritors of the native cultural tradition began at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the …

Archeological involvement in the exhumation of relatively recent historic cemeteries is a new development in Texas. Traditionally, archeologists have directed their attention toward the burial practices of aboriginal peoples and have shied away from any dealings with the excavations of late nineteenth and early twentieth century cemeteries. This trend has continued despite an ever-increasing awareness of and concern with changing modes of historic and recent tombstone embellishment on the part of archeologists, cultural anthropologists and historians. In practice, tombstones have been studied sporadically but the tasks of relocation and reinterment of the physical human remains have been left to undertakers …

This survey universe bordered on portions of the Portage River and its tributaries and along the shores of Portage and Fishers lakes. Twenty-nine prehistoric human occupation sites were located, described and recorded during the survey, five of which had been previously known (four unrecorded). Many of the sites were multicomponent but the majority of components are believed to represent Archaic period cultural manifestations. About 300 recognizable artifacts …

An Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Schwerdt Site, A Late Prehistoric Encampment In Allegan County, Michigan, Michael J. Higgins
Masters Theses
Analysis of faunal remains from the Schwerdt site, a fifteenth century encampment on the Kalamazoo River, reveals a temporary late spring occupation with an exploitative strategy aimed primarily at the spawning sturgeon. The position of Schwerdt in a larger subsistence/ settlement system is examined through comparisons with other contemporaneous sites in the southeastern Lake Michigan region. Changes in subsistence strategies on the northern periphery of effective maize agriculture.
