Cattle Stocking Rates In A Higher Rainfall Area, R Sprivulis

THE 1965 Pardelup cattle stocking rate trial was conducted with Hereford cross yearling steers on annual pasture of Mt. Barker sub. clover, Wirnmera ryegrass and various volunteer annual species.

This was topdressed with 186 lb. of superphosphate per acre in mid March.

Sympatry Changes And Hybridization Incidence In Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Changes in general fall and winter distributions of Mallards and Black Ducks over the past century have resulted in markedly increased sympatric contact during pair formation between these two forms, and have been responsible for increased opportunities for hybridization. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife records of hybrids from 34 states indicate a minimal current hybridization rate that is about 4% of the frequency expected on the basis of mating according to mathematical probabilities of chance contact. Thus, hybridization is most frequent where both forms are almost equally abundant, indicating that no reinforcement of differences reducing hybridization in the primary …

A Comparative Osteological Study Of Two Species Of Colubridae: (Pituophis And Thamnophis), Robert E. Bullock, Wilmer W. Tanner

The complete skeletal anatomy of Pituophis catenifer deserticola Stejneger is described in detail. The osteology of this species is compared with that of Thamnophis radix haydeni Kennicott in the following areas: atlas, axis, first thoracic, other thoracic lumbar, anterior caudal, middle caudal, and posterior caudal vertebrae, as well as the skull and hyoid apparatus.

Many structural similarities exist in these two species of colubrids. University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

From June 16 to 19 and again from June 24 to 29, 1965, a field party from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals along the Little Missouri River at a place 1 mi. S and 1 mi. W Medora, Billings Co., North Dakota. Among the specimens collected were representatives of five kinds of bats, including one species unreported from North Dakota, a subspecies unrecorded from there, and two species known previously from the state by a single specimen each.

High levels of fish mean cannot be used in chick diets in the United States because of the relatively high cost as compared to soybean meal. In certain areas or countries where large amounts of fish meal are produced, it may be economically feasible to use fish meal as the major protein supplement in the poultry rations.

The Initiation Of Infection By Dna From Bacteriophage Lambda, Gerald D. Elseth

Deoxyribonucleic acid isolated from bacteriophage λ can infect Escherichia coli K12 in the presence of adsorbed helper phage (Kaiser and Hogness, 1960; Kaiser, 1962). The manner in which λ DNA enters the cell and the possible role of helper phage in the penetration process is still not clear. Kinetic studies conducted in this laboratory during the initial stages of infection by λ DNA demonstrate a requirement for helper function during the penetration of an infectious molecule. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this study.

Dermacentor Andersoni And Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever In National Forest Recreational Sites Of Utah, C. Selby Herrin

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the prevalence of adult ticks of Dermacentor andersoni in national forest recreational sites of Utah, and (2) the incidence of spotted fever rickettsia, Rickettsia rickettsii, in the ticks of these areas. With the use of a white flannel cloth, 358 adult D. andersoni (135 males and 223 females) were collected from 48 recreational sites during the spring and summer of 1964. Ticks from each collection were put in pools, preserved in non-fat skim milk at -30° C, and subsequently tested for the presence of spotted fever rickettsia by guinea pig inoculations. …
