Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman Jun 1970

Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A mountain brush vegetation typified by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) dominates the uplands of Mesa Verde National Park. There is evidence that this brush element is a successional stage that has been maintained by repeated natural fires in a large part of the Mesa Verde landscape. This study was conducted to determine the role of fire in the region's ecology, the nature of the climax pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) vegetation, and the major successional stages that lead to the climax condition.

Three postburn …

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites And Coccidia Of Cattle And Sheep In Utah Valley, Joseph Carl Fox May 1970

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites And Coccidia Of Cattle And Sheep In Utah Valley, Joseph Carl Fox

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of gastro-intestinal parasites in cattle and sheep in Utah Valley was conducted. Cattle in the valley were not seriously parasitized by helminths, whereas sheep usually had heavy helminth infections. Ten genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in cattle in the valley, and 14 genera of helminths and 8 species of coccidia were identified in sheep. In conjunction with the survey, meteorologic studies were conducted May through September, 1909, to ascertain the effects which irrigation had upon micro-environments on grass pastures in relation to the development of free-Iiving stages of gastro-intestinal nematodes of ruminants. The …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine a current dispute involving resources in the sea, determine the issues involved, and hypothesize a solution. Specifically, the dispute chosen involves Latin American claims to extensive sovereign fishery rights in adjacent coastal waters and objections to these claims. The United States and the parties to a declaration made in Santiago, Chile, in 1882, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, have been chosen as most representative of the opposing positions. The International Court of Justice, primarily utilizing as a framework for analysis the dicta, findings, and opinions in their February 1969 Judgment in the North …

Changes With Growth In Selected Body Proportions Of The Woundfin Minnow (Plagopterus Argentissimus Cope: Cyprinidae), Edward James Peters May 1970

Changes With Growth In Selected Body Proportions Of The Woundfin Minnow (Plagopterus Argentissimus Cope: Cyprinidae), Edward James Peters

Theses and Dissertations

In this study 883 specimens of the woundfin minnow (Plagopterus argentissimus Cope) from the Virgin River in Utah, were weighed and measured. Ratios of body measurements to standard length, and gonad weight to total weight were calculated. From the gonad weight:total weight ratios it was determined that woundfins spawn during a period from April through June, and that the first significant gonad development is during the third year of life. Several body proportions such as, snout length, gape, upper jaw length and peduncle depth grew nearly isometrically. Growth of other body proportions was more or less allometric. Head length, body …

The best development occurred in BES and MDBK …

The Effects Of Formaldehyde On The Frequency Of Reversion Of The White-Ivory Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Ruth Ellen D. Wood May 1970

The Effects Of Formaldehyde On The Frequency Of Reversion Of The White-Ivory Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Ruth Ellen D. Wood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is an analysis of the effects of formaldehyde, a chemical which is both recombinogenic and mutagenic, on white-ivory (wi) a highly mutable allele of the white locus of Drosophila. Formaldehyde is shown to significantly increase the reversion frequency of wi. The results of this investigation differ from earlier observations in three respects: (1) there is a positive correlation between RNA (ribonucleic acid) concentration and reversion frequency in the presence of formaldehyde, but reversion does not appear to be totally RNA dependent; (2) female germ cells are more sensitive than those of the male; …

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart Apr 1970

The Evolution Of Parasitism Among Bees, George E. Bohart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Before discussing parasitic bees, I will present a rough outline of the biology of "ordinary" or non-parasitic bees. The superfamily Apoidea (bees) includes perhaps 25,000 or 30,000 species divided into nine families by recent authorities (Stephen, Bohart, Torchio, 1969) . A common biological thread holding this vast assemblage together is the provision by adults of pollen and nectar for their young. Only in the honey bees (the genus Apis which includes four species) are the larvae fed primarily on a different substance (a secretion of the pharyngeal glands) , and even this is derived from pollen and honey eaten by …

Mating Weaners Does Not Affect Future Ewe Performance, R J. Suiter, K. P. Croker Jan 1970

Mating Weaners Does Not Affect Future Ewe Performance, R J. Suiter, K. P. Croker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Maiden ewes in Western Australia are usually mated in their second year because of supposed ill-effects of earlier mating on the ewe's future production. Mating at a younger age however, providing there was no reduction in future performance, would provide for an extra lamb drop and thus increase the lifetime output of ewes.

Information from various sources indicated that weaners could be successfully mated providing their bodyweights were satisfactory. This trial was carried out to test the results of mating weaners under Western Australian conditions.

Phosphate Applications Affect The Coumestrol Level Of Medics, T Marshall, R. J. Parkin Jan 1970

Phosphate Applications Affect The Coumestrol Level Of Medics, T Marshall, R. J. Parkin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Western Australia has a million acres of medics including various cultivars of barrel medic, Medicago truncatula, and strand medic, M. littoralis. Both species contain coumestrol, a chemical thought to have caused delayed conception and reduced twinning rates among grazing ewes in New Zealand.

No infertility has been reported among ewes grazing medic pastures in Western Australia, but coumestrol levels in both species have often been high enough to suggest the possibility of oestrogenic responses among sheep grazing them.

White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Minnesota: Winter Observations, Robert D. Dorn Jan 1970

White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Minnesota: Winter Observations, Robert D. Dorn

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Food habits, movements, vegetation type use, and bedding of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis) were observed while snow-tracking in southeastern Minnesota. Waste corn (Zea Mays) was the most important food item. Three dogwoods (Cornus racemosa, C. rugosa, C. alternifolia), all non-commercial forest species, were the most important for browse. Acorns were unavailable due to crop failure. Six trails made in less than 24 hours covered more than 1 mile each, straight line distance. The longest was 31/s miles. Snow did not appear to affect movements. About two-thirds of the beds were on wooded uplands. Browsing areas appeared dependent on bedding …

Survival Of Hand-Reared Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) On Artificial Farm Ponds, Lawrence L. Thomforde Jan 1970

Survival Of Hand-Reared Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) On Artificial Farm Ponds, Lawrence L. Thomforde

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The survival of hand-reared, game-farm mallards released on artificial farm ponds was studied in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Of the 300 ducklings released each year from 1965 through 1967, an average of 45 per cent survived until most were capable of flying. More ducklings survived when released on ponds fenced from livestock than on unfenced ponds. Grazing livestock severely reduce cover vegetation around unfenced ponds. A total of 3.7 per cent of the bands were recovered. The first year recoveries represent 64 per cent of all the bands reported. Thirty-nine per cent of the band recoveries occurred within 15 miles of …

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley Jan 1970

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of chemical additives on the fermentation pattern and subsequent feeding value of corn silage was investigated over a two year period. Corn plants harvested in August 1967 (Experiment I) were ensiled with no additive, 3.50 per cent area, or urea-mineral mix supplying an equal amount of urea. Those harvested in August 1968 (Experiment II) were ensiled with no additive, 0.50 per cent urea, or 0.75 per cent urea. The nutritive value of these silages was evaluated chemically and by lactation trials.

:he addition of urea alone, or in combination with minerals elevated the initial pH and buffered against …

Bats Of The Genus Myotis From Western Mexico, With A Key To Species, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways, Larry C. Watkins Jan 1970

Bats Of The Genus Myotis From Western Mexico, With A Key To Species, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways, Larry C. Watkins

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Distribution and variation in Mexican representatives of the vespertilionid bat genus Myotis have not been well documented. The most complete modern systematic treatment of these bats is that of Miller and Allen (1928), although these authors examined relatively few specimens and some of their taxonomic conclusions have been modified by more recent studies (see especially Findley, 1960; Findley and Jones, 1967; Genoways and Jones, 1969). In the past two decades, field representatives of the Museum of Natural History at The University of Kansas have obtained large collections of mammals in western Mexico, principally in the states of Jalisco and Sinaloa. …

High Pre-Mating Liveweights Improve The Lambing Performance Of Merino Ewes, R J. Suiter Jan 1970

High Pre-Mating Liveweights Improve The Lambing Performance Of Merino Ewes, R J. Suiter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Analysis of lambing trials with Merino ewes has shown a highly significant association between pre-mating liveweight and lambing performance.

With May-June lambing ewes there was a 2.9 per cent, lambing increase for every extra 10 lb. liveweight; for July-August- September lambing ewes there was a 6.9 per cent, increase for every 10 lb. liveweight increase.

With the May-June lambing there was a critical weight below which twinning was negligible.

Urea Block Supplements For Stubble, H E. Fels, R. J. Parkin Jan 1970

Urea Block Supplements For Stubble, H E. Fels, R. J. Parkin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THERE was a great deal of controversy throughout the summer of Western Australia's 1969-70 drought over the feeding of supplements other than grain to grazing sheep.

This report summarises some of the experiments carried out by this Department to investigate various artificial means of supplementing sheep grazing stubbles and dry summer pastures.

Further details of the experiments can be obtained by contacting the authors.

The results failed to demonstrate economic responses to urea supplements for grazing sheep.

Later Mating Improves Lambing Results, R J. Suiter Jan 1970

Later Mating Improves Lambing Results, R J. Suiter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Ovulation studies in Western Australia have indicated that increased lambing percentages in crossbred and Merino ewes could be expected from mating in February-April rather than December- January.

Such increases have been demonstrated in time of lambing trials with crossbred ewes, but had not been seen in Merino flocks until recently.

This report summarises the results of time of lambing trials with Merinos carried out at the Merredin and Wongan Hills Research Stations between 1963 and 1969.
