IN Department of Agriculture drought feeding trials last summer, shy feeders lost weight and died while the bigger sheep grew fat. When drafted off and fed separately the shy feeders ate their share and survived the summer.

Several trends in cattle production and marketing are becoming evident. Leaner and perhaps heavier muscled slaughter cattle will be in demand through the chain from consumers back through retailers, packers, feeders and finally the producers. Emphasis on growth in the feedlot will continue. Thus, the feedlot and carcass characteristics desired point towards fairly large, heavier muscled cattle. At the producer level, increased emphasis is being placed on matching cow size, milk level, and overall biological type to available resources. Thus, the trend for maternal herds in the Great Plains point towards an adapted, probably moderate size, and milking cow that …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …

Effect Of Domestic Effluent On Two Spring Surveys Of Fishes In Lost Creek, Craighead County, Arkansas, John K. Beadles

Lost Creek is representative of deltonic streams of the St. Francis Basin possessing characteristics of being turbid. It has a low flow velocity except during the annual spring rains. Lost Creek meanders approximately 18 km. before receiving effluents and empties into Big Creek approximately 4 km. west of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Five collecting stations were studied in 1966 while six stations were sampled in 1970. Some fishes have been found to tolerate moderate amounts of domestic effluents and it is probable that the two species Lepomis cyanellus and Ictalurus melas, collected within the effluents, were more resistant than the other species …

Urea Or Grain Supplements For Stubble?, H E. Fels

Three methods of supplementing sheep grazing stubble were compared at Merredin Research Station in 1970. The stubble used in the experiment was left after harvesting a nine-bushel crop of Gamenya wheat which was a weed-free second crop on new land. The land had never been sown to legumes.

Little work has been done on the ecology of alpine and subalpine small mammals. They are included in faunal surveys, but little is known of their habits. In the summer of 1969 this study was undertaken in subalpine Huckleberry Park, Mount Rainier National Park, to determine the species of small mammals in the area and some of their relationships with the environment and each other. The relationships between E. amoenus and E. townsendii were of special interest.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and intensity of blood parasites in the common crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The following observations on the protozoan genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma with observations on the nematode group microfilaria, are based entirely on materials collected at Auburn, Washington during the spring of 1970.

This experiment was done once the experiment above (Urea or Grain Supplements for Stubble) had shown definite but uneconomic responses to a particular mixture of urea, molasses and minerals. The aim was to find whether the response depended on the content of various portions of the mixture, and whether the response to the "shotgun" lick could be explained by the presence of salt, sulphate or cobalt.

Thais emarginata (Deshayes, 1839) and Thais canaliculata (Dulcos, 1832), are two common Pacific coast gastropods (Family: Muricidae). T. emarginata is found in semi-protected rocky areas from Alaska to Baja California, while T. canaliaulata occurs in quiet bays from Alaska to Monterey Bay, California (Ricketts and Calvin, 1966). Both species occur on rocks and jetties where they can be seen feeding upon barnacles and young mussels. Despite the abundance of these species their reproductive biology has not been examined.

New York Holstein herds (1,152) including 75,875 cows were classified by housing system (stanchions, free stalls, and other combinations). Records initiated in these herds from 1964 to 1968 were used to determine the degree to which housing type might affect variance of milk production records in herds with 45 or more cows.

The within-herd variances by lactation for each housing system in each year-season were examined by Bartlett's test for nonhomogeneity among housing systems. Records in the stanchion systems were less variable than those in free-stall systems. This difference was not large enough to require adjustment for type of housing …

This study was conducted to obtain information that could be used in the management of the Utah and Mud lake white bass fishery. It also provides data for evaluating the effect of the loss of Mud Lake on the white bass utilizing it. Determination of age, growth rate, and coefficient of condition of the Mud lake white bass were objectives in this study.
