Adaptation Of Striped Bass To Sea Water Following Direct Transfer From Freshwater: Morphological, Biochemical, And Physiological Parameters, Judy A. King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has been heightened interest in the biology of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) because of increased pollution in their native spawning grounds and because of their extensive use in landlocked sport fisheries. Their euryhalinity makes them an excellent species for osmoregulation studies. The objective of this research was to study the rate of adaptation of striped bass gills to sea water (3% salt) after direct transfer from freshwater using biochemical (ion transport enzyme levels), physiological (chloride efflux), and ultrastructural methods. Striped bass have specialized osmoregulatory cells located on the interlamellar and afferent surfaces of their gill filaments as shown by …
Comparing Different Methods For Determining Moisture In Wheat Using Nesr Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Weider Chang
Comparing Different Methods For Determining Moisture In Wheat Using Nesr Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Weider Chang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One hundred wheat samples, with moisture ranging from 14.42 %to 7.66 %, were used to test the moisture loss from grinding, the accuracy of moisture content from two different electric moisture meters, and the accuracy and precision of Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy whole wheat moisture determination.
Fifty samples were ground through three grinders, Wiley, Cemotec, and UDY Cyclone grinder. Moisture content was determined from these ground samples, and compared with whole wheat moisture. The Cemotec grinder caused the least amount of moisture loss, followed by Wiley and then UDY Cyclone.
Fifty whole wheat samples were used to calibrate the Tecator …
Wood And Forage Production In Cleared And Thinned Dry Tropical Woodland: Implications To Goat Nutrition, Walter H. Schacht
Wood And Forage Production In Cleared And Thinned Dry Tropical Woodland: Implications To Goat Nutrition, Walter H. Schacht
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wood for firewood, fence posts and construction material and forage for domestic livestock are key resources in the caatinga vegetation zone of northeastern Brazil. This experiment was designed as a preliminary assessment of thinned caatinga as the basis of a production system which optimizes forage and wood production. Two levels of thinning (25% and 55% tree canopy cover) were compared to cleared (0% tree canopy cover) and undisturbed (95% tree canopy cover) caatinga in terms of forage and wood production and goat nutrition.
Clearing and thinning of caatinga vegetation resulted in higher amounts of available forage through the wet ·season …
Effects Of Grazing Intensity By Sheep On The Production Of Atriplex Nummularia And Sheep Live Weight In Jordan, Kamal I. Tadros
Effects Of Grazing Intensity By Sheep On The Production Of Atriplex Nummularia And Sheep Live Weight In Jordan, Kamal I. Tadros
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rangelands in Jordan are deteriorated due to a combination of harsh environmental conditions and human misuse. Jordan is importing increasingly large quantities of meat and animal products to meet the demand from its growing population. Sheep are supplementarily fed during the dry season and large quantities of grain supplements are imported every year.
Significant success has been attained in the establishment of Atriplex nummularia Lindl. (ATNU) in Jordan. There is, however, a general lack of adequate research to determine if ATNU is effectively utilized by local sheep, to what extent it is utilized and to what extent it tolerates grazing. …

Selected Parameters Of Reproduction In Rambouillet And St. Croix Ewes, Ronald Cole Evans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Experiments were conducted to determine the genetic reproductive potential of Rambouillet and St. Croix ewes . Ovulation rate (monthly) and estrus (daily) were observed for two years on 10 ewes of each breed to establish seasonal patterns . Both breeds demonstrated seasonal anestrus from May through July. Ovulation rates reached 2.0 or greater for both breeds during September to November, and decreased to 1.25 by March. Breeding groups for St. Croix and Rambouillet ewes were bred each February and August for five years to establish lambing performance at six month intervals. Age at first lambing was earlier for St. Croix …

Aspects Of Selection For Performance In Several Environments With Heterogeneous Variances, D. J. Garrick, L. Dale Van Vleck
Aspects Of Selection For Performance In Several Environments With Heterogeneous Variances, D. J. Garrick, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Dairy cattle evaluation schemes routinely assume homogeneous variance with respect to environment. Increasing evidence suggests the presence of systematic changes in variance components associated with mean level of performance. Best linear unbiased prediction procedures that account for heterogeneity are reviewed. The consequences of incorrectly assuming homogeneity for evaluation are demonstrated for a progeny test and an artificial breeding program that screens dams of sires from heterogeneous populations. Selection assuming homogeneity can be very efficient when heritability, and therefore accuracy of selection, is greatest in the more variable environment. Conversely, appreciable reduction in response results when heritability is greater in the …

Analysing Feeds For Cattle, Sheep And Goats, D J. Barker
Analysing Feeds For Cattle, Sheep And Goats, D J. Barker
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Department of Agriculture's Feed Evaluation Unit at Bunbury provides a service for farmers and allied industries on a fee-for-service basis, and conducts analyses for research officers, advisers and organisations such as the University ofWestern Australia. It also analyses feedstuffs for Departments of Agriculture in other States.
The Unit analyses about 5000 samples each year. The work load is high because no other laboratory in Western Australia provides the same service. Results are recorded on a computer which makes it easy t6o retrieve results of analyses of particular types of feedstuffs or froma particular owner or district.
Survival Of Lambs, R W. Kelly, David Lindsay
Survival Of Lambs, R W. Kelly, David Lindsay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Between one in every five or six lambs that are born each year in Western Australia die at or about the time of birth. This represents a loss approaching two million lambs and is arguably out single greatest wastage in sheep production. The deaths have an immediate impact on lambing performance and therefore lamb sales, and ultimately effects on such areas as selection of breeding replacement stock, the proportion of ewes and weathers that can be run in a self-replacing flock and the amount of wool produced and its uality.
This article summarises information on what influences lamb survival, and …

The Awassi Fat Tail Sheep Project, R J. Lightfoot
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Australia's first Awassi fat tail lambs arrived at Kununurra in January 1987, completing the first major step in an ambitious project to establish a fat tail sheep breeding industry in this country.
Fat tail sheep bred in the Middle East attract much higher prices than merino wethers imported from Australia. The question to be resolved through our product development and market research is what premiums will Middle Eastern buyers pay for fat tail sheep bred in Australia and exported to the region.
The Department of Agriculture believes that there is potential for Sustralian producers to enter these new markets without …

Relationships Between Rate Of Growth, Catheptic Enzymes And Meat Palatability In Young Bulls, Chris R. Calkins, S. C. Seideman, J. D. Crouse
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Relationships between rate of growth, endogenous muscle enzymes and meat palatability were investigated in 48 young (13 mo) Angus bulls. After backgrounding for 4 mo, bulls were placed on a high-energy diet for 30 d, at which time they were assigned randomly to one of three feeding treatments: 1) high energy (ad libitum-fed), 2) maintenance energy (restriction-fed to maintain body weight) or 3) sub-maintenance energy (restriction-fed to lose .68 kg/d). Cattle were slaughtered after 30 or 60 d on trial. Cathepsins B and H and β-glucuronidase in the longissimus muscle were quantitated at slaughter. Serum hydroxyproline, longissimus muscle collagen, taste-panel …

The effects of protein and energy intakes by primiparous sows during a 28-day lactation on thyroxine (T4) and urea concentrations in blood serum of sows, and sow and litter performance were examined in two experiments.
Effect Of Level Of Protein And Supplemental Choline On Reproductive Performance Of Gilts Fed Sorghum Diets, C. V. Maxwell, R. K. Johnson, W. G. Luce
Effect Of Level Of Protein And Supplemental Choline On Reproductive Performance Of Gilts Fed Sorghum Diets, C. V. Maxwell, R. K. Johnson, W. G. Luce
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A total of 214 gilts was used (two trials) to determine the effect of protein level and choline supplementation during gestation on weight gain, conception rate and subsequent reproductive performance. The gilts were fed either a 12 or 16% crude protein sorghum-soybean meal diet containing either a high supplemental choline level or no supplemental choline in a 2 • 2 factorial arrangement of treatments Conception rate was not influenced by either protein or choline level. Choline supplementation increased pig weight at 42 d of age (P<.14) and litter weight at 21 (P<.12) and 42 d (P<.1). Gilts fed the 16% protein diet produced larger pigs at 42 d (P<.13) and heavier litters at birth, (P<.l) 21 d (P<.14) and 42 d (P<.05) than gilts fed the 12% protein diet. A larger choline effect on litter size and pig and litter weight was observed for gilts fed the 12% protein diet than for those fed the 16% gestation diet, although the protein-choline interaction was not significant for any traits measured. The incidence of spraddle leg condition was low and was not affected by level of dietary protein or supplemental choline.

Growth And Proteolytic Activity Of Selected Psychrotrophic Bacteria In Whole Milk And Whole Milk Retentate, Ravinder Reddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the last twenty years a number of membrane separation processes have evolved from laboratory scale, through pilot plant investigation, to full scale production units. One such process, ultrafiltration, has been found particularly useful in the dairy industry. Ultrafiltration uses porous polymeric membranes to separate molecules, principally on the basis of their molecular weight. In milk, fat, protein and associated substances are retained on the membrane. Permeate, which passes through the membrane contains mainly water, lactose and other low molecular weight substances. There is interest in ultrafiltration of milk because of it is potential importance in saving costs to both …
Production From Heifers And First Calvers, G J. Sawyer
Production From Heifers And First Calvers, G J. Sawyer
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Heifers and first calvers present the major problems of the beef breeding herd. Reproduction rates, calf growth and survival of first calvers are generally much poorer than those of adult breeders.
Early successful reproductive performance is important in beef herds because of the high overhead cost of keeping breeding beef heifers or cows, Where possible, beef producers should aim to join heifers at 14 to 15 months of age. To achieve this goal, producers should set production targets for those animals. These targets will differ from farm to farm depending on when calves are turned off and the seasonal feed …
