The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson
The Influence Of Feed And Sunshine On The Vitamin D Content Of Cow’S Milk, Ben L. Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past several years there has been a growing tendency among dairymen, particularity those located near the large cities, to keep their cows in the barn much of the time. Under such a system of management the cows receive but little direct sunshine. In some localities it is also possible to find many cows which are fed the year around on dry feed receiving very little, if any, green food, either as soiling crops or as pasture. From many standpoints such practices are, of course, necessary and desirable, but from the standpoint of the nutritional value of the milk …

An Economic Study Of The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In South Dakota, H.C. Severin, South Dakota Department Of Game And Fish
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
The economic status in South Dakota of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasinus colchicus torquatus Gmelin X Phasianus colchicus colchicus L.) has turned out to be a controversial matter of no small importance with the citizenry of the State. This bird was introduced into South Dakota mainly thru the efforts and funds of the State Department of Game and Fish, and thru this department the pheasant was protected form slaughter by hunters, and permitted to multiply. When it was believed that the pheasants hasd established themselves in a county and multiplied sufficiently to warrant an open season , such an open season …
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The 1929 report of the Storrs Egg Laying Contest, which has been conducted at Storrs, Connecticut, twenty-one years, shows that the best pen of ten hens entered laid 2,802 eggs, and the poorest pen laid 829 eggs. In the best pen the average egg production per hen was 280, 2 eggs as compared with 82.9 eggs per bird in the poorest pen. Why did the one pen lay so many eggs, and the other so few? This prompts us to try to find out what factors are responsible for the number of eggs a hen lays in the course of …

The Vitamin A And The Vitamin E Content Of Field-Cured And Artificially Cured Alfalfa Hay, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, R. R. Graves
The Vitamin A And The Vitamin E Content Of Field-Cured And Artificially Cured Alfalfa Hay, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, R. R. Graves
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A comparative study of the vitamin A content of field-cured and artificially cured alfalfa was made by comparing the growth produced by 124 rats receiving alfalfa hay as their source of vitamin A. From the results of this study, in which the experiments were duplicated, it is concluded that under the conditions of these experiments the artificially cured alfalfa was twice as potent in vitamin A as was the field-cured alfalfa. The comparative study of the vitamin E content of these hays was made by comparing the number of litters produced by groups of female rats which received graded quantities …
The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski
The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski
Bachelors’ Theses
In recent years a great deal has been written on the endocrine glands. However most of the articles deal with the physiological function of the various ductless glands only. Very little of this literature deals with the anatomical structure of the organs themselves. In this thesis we shall discuss the anatomical structure of the endocrine glands namely, the Pituitary(hypophysis), Thyroid and the Adrenal of a marsupial. The work has been done on the opossum of the virginia species, Didelphis virginiana. Only two specimens were available for dissection.

The Endocrine Glands And Their Secretions, Eldred M. Moehrke
Bachelors’ Theses
In the following work the endocrine system was considered in general with special emphasis on the thyroid and para-thyroid glands. In some manner, which we do not well understand, the thyroid and the para-thyroid glands affect the other ductless glands and it is this relationship that is stressed.
General Morphology And Physiology Of The Urogenital System Of The Opossum, Robert Schuster
General Morphology And Physiology Of The Urogenital System Of The Opossum, Robert Schuster
Bachelors’ Theses
From the very first, I wish the state that the title, "General Morphology and Physiology of the Urogenital System of the Opossum," is not entirely descriptive of the text which is to follow. However it is as nearly descriptive as I could hope to make it.
It seems that during the history of biological research the workers have done comparatively little work on the Opossum. This neglect was probably due to its inaccessibility, since it is found only in Australia and in the semitropic regions of North America. In the nineteenth century the eminent authority on anatomy, Sir Richard Owen, …

The Influence Of Number Of Daily Milkings On The Production Of Dairy Cows, R. F. Morgan, H. P. Davis
The Influence Of Number Of Daily Milkings On The Production Of Dairy Cows, R. F. Morgan, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
High-producing Holstein, Jersey, Ayrshire, and Guernsey cows of various ages milked three times daily produced from 39.69 to 52.26 per cent more fat and from 44.98 to 65.18 per cent more milk than cows milked twice daily. When high-producing cows of all breeds milked four times daily were compared with cows milked twice daily, the fat production for the several age classes varied from 110.19 to 127.53 per cent and the milk production from 149.08 to 160.31 per cent greater for those milked four times. Milking high-producing cows four times as compared with three times daily showed an increased fat …

Studies Of Rickets In Swine, William J. Loeffel, Ray R. Thalman, F. C. Olson, F. A. Olson
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
During the years 1925 to 1929 inclusive, the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station carried on a series of four experiments to study the importance of the antirachitic factors in the nutrition of swine. Vitamin D as obtained from cod-liver oil and the radiant-energy factor of sunlight were the sources of the antirachitic factors that received primary consideration. Emphasis was placed upon the study of the symptoms and lesions produced in pigs fed a rickets-producing ration.

The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.
Utilization Of Proteins By The Growing Chick, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson
Utilization Of Proteins By The Growing Chick, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. There is a marked difference in the nutritive value of the various protein-contributing concentrates when used to supplement a corn-wheat basal ration which has been made complete for known vitamin and mineral essentials. 2. There is a great difference in the biological value even of animal protein concentrates. 3. Soybean meal produced a better growth rate than any of the other plant concentrates used. Cottonseed meal proved to have a greater growth-promoting value than did linseed oil meal. 4. The supplementing values of protein concentrates, one to another, is not quite as evident as one would expect if the …

The Vitamin A Content Of The Milk Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey, And Guernsey Cows, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
The Vitamin A Content Of The Milk Of Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey, And Guernsey Cows, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A comparative study of the vitamin A content of milk produced by Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey, and Guernsey cows was made by comparing the growth produced by 560 rats receiving milk from these breeds as their only source of vitamin A. The results showed some slight irregular differences in the gains produced by the milk from the different breeds. When these differences were considered in view of the individual variation of the experimental animals, they appeared negligible. This conclusion was substantiated by a statistical examination of the data. From the results of this study in which the experiments were duplicated, it …

Comparative Metabolism Of Several Calcareous Minerals In Poultry Feeding, John T. Tripp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In part one of this study it was found that chickens when given oyster shells, in addition to their regular diet, produced a greater number of eggs and eggs of greater shell strength than did the chickens that were given the other calcareous materials used in this experiment. Oyster shell was followed in the order of their effectiveness by clam shells, Black Hills limestone, Nenno chalk stone, and Wisconsin dolomitie limestone.

The Spleen: With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert
The Spleen: With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert
Bachelors’ Theses
Throughout the ages the spleen has been an object of the most active curiosity. The opinion that the spleen is unnecessary and of no use to the individual has prevailed with an uninterrupted succession in the World in all ages. In Persia, many centuries ago, in the reign of Abouserous it was a custom to splenectomize the horses that were kept to carry the King’s dispatches, in order to give them more agility and swifter feet. The great Aristotle thought the spleen to be a sort of spurious liver planted in the left side to correspond to the liver in …
The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In Central Nebraska, M. H. Swenk
The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In Central Nebraska, M. H. Swenk
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Pheasants, including the Chinese and the so-called English pheasants, with their hybrid the ring-necked pheasant, have been introduced and established in a large area in the northern United States during the past 50 years. During the past 15 years continued importations of these birds into Nebraska, together with the rapid increase of those already established, have built up a large pheasant population in the state, estimated at more than a million birds. They have especially thrived in a block of 16 counties in east-central Nebraska. Protection was afforded them until 1927, when short open seasons were permitted in the fall …
