Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout Jan 1935

Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout

Papers in Ornithology

During more than a quarter of a century I have been making notes and collecting information about the Owls of Lincoln county and it seemed an opportune time to put this information into print that it might be available to those who are interested in birds and serve as a basis for further study and amplification. Lincoln County is not usually considered a favorable place for Owls to reside on account of the absence of heavy timber over most of its area. But the nine varieties listed will probably be extended as more observations are made by those who are …

Probolitrema Tomalis Sp. Nov. (Trematoda) From Dasyatis Dipterura And Brachylaemus Virginianus (Dickerson) (Trematoda) From Didelphys Virginiana, Elsie Mae Graves Jan 1935

Probolitrema Tomalis Sp. Nov. (Trematoda) From Dasyatis Dipterura And Brachylaemus Virginianus (Dickerson) (Trematoda) From Didelphys Virginiana, Elsie Mae Graves

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The genus Probolitrema was established by Looss (1901) in recognition of the location of vitellaria and multiple testes entirely outside the extra caecal field in Anaporrhutum richardii Lopez (1888) which differentiated it from A.albidum Ofenheim (1900) with the vitellaria within and the testes partly within and partly without the intra-caecal field. Ofenhein had created the genus Anaporrhutum for the above two species because of their multiple testes. A.albidum was a new species described by him; his A.richiardii Lopez specimens he considered to be the same species as Distomum richiardii Lopez, described in detail by Monticelli in 1893. Looss pointed out …

Studies On A Cave Fish Of Uncertain Classification, Jennie Miller Orr Aug 1934

Studies On A Cave Fish Of Uncertain Classification, Jennie Miller Orr

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The specimens studied during this investigation were taken incidentally during a general faunal survey of certain peculiar streams flowing from underground channels. On casual examination it was evident that they belonged to the cave fish group but were not the well known almost colorless blind variety. After checking the descriptions in various vertebrate manuals it appeared that they were probably a new species.

There are three groups of cave fishes, the non-blind, the semi-blind and the blind. Chologaster, or the Rice Field Minnows of South Carolina, are members of the non-blind group. Forbesichthys of southern Illinois and Kentucky is an …

The Vitamin E Content Of Certain Dairy Feeds, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Aug 1934

The Vitamin E Content Of Certain Dairy Feeds, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A study was made of the vitamin E content of each of the ingredients of our dairy herd ration, excepting the salt, lime, and bone meal. Female rats which were able to conceive but unable to reproduce when fed a diet deficient in vitamin E were fed the various feeds as a source of vitamin E during a second breeding period. The presence of vitamin E in a feed was thus shown by the ability of the female to cast a litter. The vitamin E content of bran, shorts, linseed oil meal, hominy feed, white corn, yellow corn, cottonseed meal, …

Some Observations On Humidity And Weight Loss In The Incubation Of Turkey Eggs, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson Aug 1934

Some Observations On Humidity And Weight Loss In The Incubation Of Turkey Eggs, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. Turkey eggs which are incubated under chicken hens lose from 11 to 13 per cent of their original weight during the first 24 days of incubation. Small turkey eggs lose relatively more weight than large eggs incubated under the same conditions. 2. Considerable variation was observed in the weight loss during the first 24 days of incubation of eggs of approximately the same size when incubated in the same environment. The range was from 7 to 24 per cent of the original weight. Differences in shell texture may account for these variations, although care was taken to select only …

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin Apr 1934

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin

Bachelors’ Theses

The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

Some Digenetic Trematodes From Deep-Water Fish Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Introduction (first two paragraphs)

The parasitic fauna of ocean depths is practically unknown. Although an extensive fish population occurs at all depths, very little study has yet been made on the helminths of these fish. During the summers of 1930, 1931, and 1932 excellent opportunity was offered for the collection of parasites from fish trawled from depths varying from 40 to 582 fathoms at Tortugas, Florida. A considerable number of systematic hauls by the staff and crew of the Tortugas Biological Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington yielded an abundance and considerable variety of fish, some of rare forms, …

The Vitamin A Content Of Skimmilk, Standardized Milk, And Cream From Different Breeds Of Cows, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Dec 1933

The Vitamin A Content Of Skimmilk, Standardized Milk, And Cream From Different Breeds Of Cows, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A study was made of the vitamin A content of skimmilk, of milk standardized by the addition of separated milk, and of cream. Rats whose body stores of vitamin A had been depleted by being fed a vitamin A deficient ration were fed either skimmilk, standardized milk, or cream as a source of vitamin A. Approximately 750 rats were used in nine experiments. From the results of these experiments the following conclusions were drawn: (1) that the vitamin A content of milk is associated largely with the butterfat and that separated milk containing a small quantity of fat contains only …

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Vertebrate Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls Sep 1933

An Analysis Of The Habitat Distribution Of The Vertebrate Fauna Of A Stream- Bank Association In Western Kansas, Olive Falls

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This present paper is chiefly concerned with the distribution of animals. The environmental and faunal conditions of Western Kansas have not been studied, and they are rapidly changing, due to human occupancy of the region. Therefore, a major object of this report is to put on record information in regard to the present vertebrate animal life in Western Kansas. Profound changes in the native conditions have already been recognized; for example, many animals have become extinct, and others are gradually vanishing. It is in the hope of contributing something of the facts of the status of the species in this …

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen Aug 1933

A Study Of The Tolerance Of Certain Species Of Fishes For Low Dissolved Oxygen & Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Charles Allen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Extensive investigations have been made of the oxygen end carbon dioxide content of water in which fishes live. A review of the literature, however, shows that these studies have not been made under controlled laboratory conditions dealing with the species studied in this investigation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen that will support certain species of fishes and, also, the lethal effects resulting from increased carbon dioxide tension as determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny May 1933

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny

Bachelors’ Theses

Th importance of fresh-water organisms is usually underestimated, especially by the very people who live near bodies of fresh-water and who thus can observe such organisms throughout the year. It is really easier to study minute life forms than it is to study larger organisms, for the former can be examined under all kinds of conditions as experiments are performed upon them. The purpose of this thesis is to give a short survey of the chief type among the fresh-water, Crustaceans, with special reference to morphology.

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson May 1933

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

Within this new field, and the limited time …
