Studies Of Prenatal Development In Farm Animals, L. M. Winters
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The central objective of these studies has been to gather as accurate data as possible regarding normal prenatal development in farm animals. Once this is established as a base we or other workers will be in a position to study the specific effects of unfavorable environments, such as deficiency rations, excess fat, etc. Our work has progressed far enough so that we are now incorporating some of the latter in our studies.

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata
The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys.
Summary and Conclusions
Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. Out of 8 laboratory-raised chickens to which there were fed about 2,300 grasshoppers that had been collected in an endemic gizzard-worm area, …

The Flora Of The Tasco Lake Region, Sheridan County, Kansas, Raymond W. Darland
The Flora Of The Tasco Lake Region, Sheridan County, Kansas, Raymond W. Darland
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
It has been customary in writing theses dealing with taxonomic problems to collect data from an entire county. Having had occasion to collect botanical specimens from the Tasco Lake for work in biology at the Sheridan High School, the wealth of plant life to be found here became apparent. The area ranges from xerophytic forms on the uplands to the hydrophytic forms in the lake and marshes. Many of the latter have never been reported from Western Kansas. Collections in preserving fluid were made of the water forms found and specimens of the landforms were mounted on regulation-sized sheets properly …

The Effect Of Variation In The Calcium-To-Phosphorus Ratio On The Utilization Of Nitrogen, Calcium, And Phosphorus By The Growing Chick, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. Three groups totaling 123 chicks were fed accurately known amounts of rations containing 0.9, 1.5, and 2.3 per cent of calcium with liberal provision of the antirachitic factor so that conditions for assimilation and deposition were favorable. 2. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of ingested nitrogen was found to be about 37 per cent, and that of phosphorus about 28 per cent in the three lots. 3. With 0.9 per cent calcium in the ration, 35 per cent of that ingested was retained; at a level of 1.5 per cent calcium, 24 per cent was …

The Anatomy Of The Oyster, M.J. Rohlinger
The Anatomy Of The Oyster, M.J. Rohlinger
Bachelors’ Theses
The phylum Mollusca manifests the following characteristics: bilateral symmetry; three primary germ layers; free-living and sessile; marine and fresh-water; a shell modified to form either a bivalve or a univalve which gives an appearance of segmentation due to rings of growth or arrangement of certain parts of the shell as is seen in the class Amphineura, this is only apparent metamerism because the Mollusca are considered to be unsegmented animals; a coelom poorly developed; a foot; a mantle cavity; well developed digestive, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems. When one inspects a Chiton, an oyster, a snail, an octopus, or a …

The Effect Of Pregnancy And Parturition On The Weight Of Dairy Cows, R. F. Morgan, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A study was made of the effect of pregnancy and parturition upon the weight cycle of dairy cows of the Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey breeds according to gestation periods from data accumulated from records for the period 1922 to 1934 of the dairy herd of the Dairy Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska. The weights of the cows were obtained from three consecutive weighings made at the middle of each month and daily weighings beginning at the 265th day of pregnancy and continuing for 30 days after calving. A total of 656 separate gestation periods were tabulated according …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. The nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus content of 127 newly hatched chicks was determined. 2. Thirty newly hatched chicks were fed accurately known amounts of a good chick mash for 60 days. At the end of the period nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and fat were determined for each chick. 3. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of nitrogen was found to be 37.8 per cent, calcium 43.4 per cent, and phosphorus 27.3 per cent of the respective elements fed. 4. The average gain in live weight per gram of nitrogen fed was 12.0 grams. 5. The rate of …
A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley
A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Since no comparative histological studies of the eyes of cave animals seem to have been made, it was decided to make such a study with a view …

Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan
Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Comparatively little has been done concerning the listing or recording of the Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas. What records there are of the species are for the most part unpublished. Early papers dealing with Kansas herpetology are few in number. Little has been done in Ellis and the surrounding counties, so there seems to be a need for such an ecological study as has been carried out in this paper “Notes on the Distribution of Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas . " The objectives kept in mind in preparing this report have been to attempt to …

A Taxonomical, Morphological And Distributional Study Of The Utah Cyprinidae /|Cby Sheldon Phipps Hayes, Sheldon Phipps Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
The hydrography of Utah may be thought of as being roughly divided into two large general drainage areas--, the Colorado River draining the eastern halt and southern portion ot the state and the Bonneville Drainage encompassing the remaining part of it. Earlier workers have listed eight genera and fourteen species of minnows occuring in Utah. Of these this report includes seven genera and ten species found within the borders of our state.

Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder
Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
More than 2,000 years ago people were interested in determining the sex of the embryo in hatching eggs and the sex of day-old chicks. No method of determining the sex of day-old chicks (except of course in sex-linked chicks) was of the slightest value until the Japanese method was discovered and developed. About 1925 Japanese scientists discovered the presence of a rudimentary copulatory organ located on the ventral rim of the cloaca which was present in all day-old males and only a few day-old females.
