Tests For The Determination Of Milk Quality, H Maslin
Tests For The Determination Of Milk Quality, H Maslin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Foolproof tests devised to determine the quality of milk delivered to the factories can detect sub-standard milk with accuracy.
They have an important place in helping achieve a high standard of quality in our dairy products.

Chronic Respiratory Disease Of Poultry In Western Australia, M R. Gardiner, R. V. Vagg
Chronic Respiratory Disease Of Poultry In Western Australia, M R. Gardiner, R. V. Vagg
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Widespread chronic respiratory disease was revealed in a survey of respiratory infections in Perth metropolitan area poultry flocks.
Most occur in early or midsummer and cause a serious fall in egg production. Return to full lay after the infection is usually slow.
While these infections can cause production losses in flocks which are under heavy stress, none of the more serious forms of chronic respiratory disease was found.
This gives encouragement for future control of the disease in Western Australia.
Chick Management, D F. Hessels
Chick Management, D F. Hessels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A UGUST is the month when most poultry farmers get their chickens. Special attention will be needed in the coming weeks, with nutrition and disease prevention the main considerations.
Skim Milk : The Cheapest Pig Feed, P C. Beck
Skim Milk : The Cheapest Pig Feed, P C. Beck
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BUTTERFAT production has started on most South-West dairy farms, and although pig prices are not high at present, many dairy farmers have either purchased young stock or bred pigs to utilise their surplus skim milk.
Skim milk is the best feed for pigs on the dairy farm. Properly used in conjunction with other feeds it produces high quality carcasses at minimum cost.
Cull Your Dairy Cows On Production, R A. Bettenay
Cull Your Dairy Cows On Production, R A. Bettenay

Stress Factors In Pig Raising, P C. Beck
Stress Factors In Pig Raising, P C. Beck
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE pig raiser who wishes to attain the best possible growth performance from his pigs must recognise factors other than the basic ones of good nutrition and bredin capacity.
These are "stress factors"—minor factors of husbandry which can greatly damage health and limit the growth rate.
A Modified Copper Hot Water System, F J. Fielder
A Modified Copper Hot Water System, F J. Fielder
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A good supply of hot and boiling water for cleansing and sterilising utensils is essential for hygienic milk production.
Dairy Instructor F. Fielder, M.D.D., describes an efficient and economical modification of a copper hot water system for this purpose.
SINGLE copper units of 14 or 16 gallon capacity to supply hot and boiling water for the dairy are no longer good enough for most dairy farms.

Water Cooling Towers : For Cooling Milk On The Dairy Farm, K Needham
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Experience on dairy farms where water cooling towers have been installed has shown that the quality and grading of milk and cream has been improved and maintained, particularly during the summer.
MOST defects in the quality of dairy produce can be attributed to the activity of micro-organisms which cause spoilage.

Mycotic Dermatitis (Lumpy Wool) And Fleece Rot Of Sheep, J Shilkin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Matted and sometimes discoloured specimens of wool are often received at the Department of Agriculture during seasons of heavy rainfall.
Two similar but quite distinct diseases are recognised as having caused this condition.
They are mycotic dermatitis (lumpy wool) and fleece rot. Both conditions damage the fleece and render affected sheep susceptible to blowfly strike.

Evaluation Of Sires Available Through Planned Mating, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson, H. W. Carter
Evaluation Of Sires Available Through Planned Mating, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson, H. W. Carter
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
There is some concern that methods of sire evaluation which utilize contemporary stablemate averages can be biased by differential genetic merit of the mates of these sires. A little reflection, however, indicates that even if the cows to which some sires are mated are more highly selected than the mates of other sires, this differential merit will not affect seriously the ranking of sires according to the evaluation of their progeny. Until the present, data have not been readily available with which to study the seriousness of this problem. The present study does not deal with the question generally, but …
Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck
Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The chief advantages of sire evaluation based on five-month daughter records are: 1. Genetic progress is inversely proportional to the turnover rate in testing bulls so that if this interval is shortened by 10%, the rate of genetic progress will be increased by 11%. The turnover period can be shortened with the use of 5-month records from about 50 months to 45 months—a decrease of 10% in time. 2. Genetic progress is also related to how many top bulls are saved and how many poor ones are culled out of all those sampled. In other words, the more bulls tested …
