Effect Of Levels Of Meat And Bone Scraps On Growth Rate And Feed Efficiency Of Growing-Finishing Swine, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Many investigations have shown that soybean meal when properly supplemented can replace meat and bone scraps as a major source of protein in swine rations (Lepley et al., 1950; Terrill et al., 1954; Rohlf, 1954; Meade and Hanson, 1957; Meade et al., 1958; Becker et al., 1960). The importance of this finding is emphasized by the work of Bloss et al. (1953), Terrill et al. (1954), Meade and Teter (1957) and Becker and Jensen (1961) who reported a significant depression in growth rate and feed efficiency of swine fed rations containing relatively high levels …

Parameters For Milk Yield And For Percents Of Ash, Dry Matter, Fat And Protein In Sows, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. A. Hartman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Milk was collected separately by machine from four to six glands on nine Yorkshire and Berkshire sows 2 or 3 days after farrowing and at weekly intervals throughout 6 weeks of lactation. Milk yield was measured following intramuscular injection of oxytocin, and the percent of ash, dry matter, fat and protein in the milk from each gland was determined. The average milk yield per gland, following a 1-hour period during which the pigs had been removed from the sow reached a peak of 74.6 gm. 3 weeks after farrowing. The ash content was 0.79% 2 or 3 days after farrowing, …

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

Pigs On The Dairy Farm : Cutting Costs To Meet Low Prices, R A. Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
As all dairy farmers know, the market prices of pigs tends to fluctuate, depending on supply and demand, in a manner which is very hard to predict.
At a time when prices are low there are several things which the dairy farmer can do to continue operating, although at a reduced margin.

Detergents For The Dairy Farm, H Maslin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
CLEANLINESS in both the physical and bacteriological sense is essential to the production of high quality dairy products, and high quality in these products is essential to both the health of the community and the successful and economic operation of the industry.
Detergents have an important place in maintaining dairy hygiene—but they must be properly used if they are to be really effective.
In this article Dairy Instructor H. Maslin, M.D.D., describes the qualities of a good dairy detergent and explains how it should be fitted into the regular cleaning routine.

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Vibrionic abortion of sheep has caused heavy losses in a number of wheatbelt flocks. In several flocks up to 50 per cent, of the ewes aborted as a result of this newly reported disease.
This article gives the history of the disease in this State, and describes the symptoms for the benefit of other farmers whose flocks may be affected. Ewes become immune after the first attack.

Feeding pastured calves protein supplements weekly instead of daily during the winter made little difference in either winter or summer gains, according to research results to date.
Two sources of protein were used in the trial. (I) Second cutting alfalfa hay was fed at the rate of four pounds per head daily. One group of calves was fed four pounds per head daily and one group was fed 28 pounds per head once each week. (2) Forty percent protein, pellets or cake, was fed at the rate of one pound per head daily. One group was fed one pound per …

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley
Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.
Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.
Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.
Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and …

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents a study of the helminth endoparasite of the Chinese or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The digestive and respiratory tracts of 262 pheasants, all of which were collected in Brown County, South Dakota, were examined. Collections were ,made from January, 1961, through November of the same year. The problem was divided as follows: (1) locating and Identifying the helminth parasites, (2) relating parasitism to the age of the birds, (3) ascertaining the seasonal distribution of the parasites, and (4) determining what gross pathological changes were due to parasitism. Previous to this study, little or no literature was available …
Redescription Of The Adult Water Mite Hydrachna Miliaria And Description Of Its Life History, David Lou Kass
Redescription Of The Adult Water Mite Hydrachna Miliaria And Description Of Its Life History, David Lou Kass
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During the summer of 1957 the writer became interested in water mites while collecting insects in an unnamed pond (see map in appendix) near Tomales, California. It was noted during that period that specimens of a giant water-bug, Lethocerus americanus Leidy (1847) had many larval mites attached to their ventral sides, and the lack of information concerning these animals and their life histories stimulated interest in investigating the problem detailed in this thesis. This work was begun in the summer of 1957 and has continued through the summer of 1959 and 1960.
Due to the lack of information and lack …
