Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton Apr 1968

Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Selection of dairy cows for economic merit requires the use of a model for genetic merit that involves the cross-product of the genetic values for milk and milk fat percentage. A linear and a quadratic index are described as procedures for selection of cows, the linear index being b1pm + b2pt and the quadratic index being b1pm + b2pt + b2pm2 + b4pt2 + b5pmpt where pm and pt are the phenotypic deviations …

Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood Apr 1968

Distributional Changes And Interaction Between Prairie Chickens And Sharp-Tailed Grouse In The Midwest, Paul A. Johnsgard, Robert E. Wood

Papers in Ornithology

The "prairie grouse" of North America present an interesting example of the effects of human activities on breeding distribution patterns of birds, with resulting changes in geographic distribution and spacial isolation. Thus, the Heath Hen (Tympanuchus cupido cupido) was one of the most familiar birds to the early colonists, who relied heavily on it for food. Ultimately, loss of habitat caused the Heath Hen's extinction. When the vast tall-grass prairies west of the Appalachians were settled, Greater Prairie Chickens (T. c. pinnatus) were probably more plentiful, and greatly increased as woods were cleared and grain crops supplemented native grasses. With …

Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck Mar 1968

Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Differences between daughter-dam and paternal sib estimates of heritability of first lactation milk yield have not been explained for New York data. Deviations of first lactation records from herdmate means of 155,070 artificially sired Holsteins were analyzed to examine the effect of unequal within group variances on the paternal sib estimate of heritability. The statistical model used to describe the data was yy = μ + si + eiy with σ 2yi = σ 2s + = σ2ei. Estimates of the within sire-group variances, σ1 2ei, were heterogeneous (P …

Influence Of Advance In Season On Nutritive Value Of Forage Consumed By Cattle Grazing Western Nebraska Native Range, C. L. Streeter, D. C. Clanton, O. E. Hoehne

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the advance in season on the nutritive value of forage consumed by cattle grazing western Nebraska summer range. Eleven digestion trials were conducted during the summer grazing season of two consecutive years.

The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard Feb 1968

The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

The courtship of ducks is unusual in several aspects. In temperate zones it generally begins very early, usually on the wintering grounds, so courtship is not a manifestation of territorial proclamation and defense as is the case with many songbirds. Nor, because of its early initiation, is courtship closely correlated with gonad growth and fertilization; rather, pair formation is normally completed prior to the period of maximum gonadal activity. Therefore, reproductive behavior in ducks may be conveniently divided into an early phase of conspicuous displays associated with actual pair formation, followed by the later and less elaborate behavior patterns concerned …

Three Physical Measurements Of Male White-Tailed Deer In West Virginia Correlated With Soil Fertility And Population Density, Charles C. Coffman Jan 1968

Three Physical Measurements Of Male White-Tailed Deer In West Virginia Correlated With Soil Fertility And Population Density, Charles C. Coffman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Differences in the physical size of male white-tailed deer from varying parts of West Virginia were known to exist a considerable number of years before any sophisticated attempts were made to explain them. Prior to 1940, the state's deer herd had been making a slow, but increasingly steady, comeback from a period of extreme scarcity around the turn of the century. To supplement the original remaining stock, shown in Figure 1, page 2, a deer restocking program was initiated in 1923. In 1937, federal legislation, in the form of the Federal Aid to Wildlife Restoration Act, gave added support to …

A Bull Snake Encounter With Young Ground Squirrels, Orrin J. Rongstad Jan 1968

A Bull Snake Encounter With Young Ground Squirrels, Orrin J. Rongstad

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Apparent results of on encounter of a bull snake, Pituophis catenifer, with a litter of three thirteen-lined ground squirrels, Citellus tridecemlineatus, suggests that bull snakes may have eliminated young ground squirrels from a 3-acre lawn of the Cedar Creek Natural History Area at Bethel, Minn., during the summer of 1967.

Natural Selection In A Leopard Frog Population, David J. Merrell Jan 1968

Natural Selection In A Leopard Frog Population, David J. Merrell

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In a population of immature leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) at Mud Lake, Washington County, Minnesota, a high frequency of unilateral deformity of the hind legs was observed in 1965. Metamorphosis from tadpole to frog took place during July, and samples in late July averaged 14.8% deformed frogs. By late September, the frequency of deformed frogs had decreased to 3.6%, presumably as the result of natural selection.
