Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody
Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody
All Master's Theses
The present study considers certain aspects of the ecologies of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and bam swallows (Hirundo rustica) in an area of overlap, where both species are found nesting together and foraging over the same fields. Careful attention was given to foraging flight patterns, foraging elevations, and food consumed by each species in an effort to determine whether or not there is any evidence of competition for food resources. Aggressive interactions between the species were recorded, and the general timing of their nesting cycles was noted.

Osteology And Myology Of Phrynosoma P. Platyrhinos Girard And Phrynosoma D. Hernandesi Girard, Richard L. Jenkins, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This study confirms the work of Etheridge (1964) in suggesting the peculiarity of the genus Phrynosoma within the family Iguanidae. The anterior osteology and myology of Phrynosoma platyrhinos platyrhinos Girard and Phrynosoma douglassi hernandesi Girard indicate Phrynosoma to be highly specialized and to differ significantlv from the Iguanid structure as portrayed by Oelrich (1956), Robison and Tanner (1962), and Avery and Tanner (1964). They also differ because of: ( 1 ) absence of lacrimal and postfrontal bones; (2) occurrence of occipital (also mandibular and temporal) spines; (3) posterodorsal shift of the skull elements; (4) divided nature of the M. sternohyoideus, …

Some Aspects Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Cercariae Of Schistosoma Mansoni Sambon, 1907, A. Eugene Dunham Jr.
Some Aspects Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Cercariae Of Schistosoma Mansoni Sambon, 1907, A. Eugene Dunham Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cercariac of Schistosoma mansoni were studied for glycogen utilization, uptake of glucose from solution, lactic acid production, and respiration.
Using the anthrone method of determination of carbohydrate, the amount of glycogen used by a single cercaria in 4 hours is determined as 43.2 x 10-4 μg ± 6.6 x 10-4 μg.
Glucose was not observed to have been used from solution under the conditions of the experiment, even in the presence of trehalose. The determinations were made by the Glucostat method.
After deproteinization and desugarization, aliquots of supernatant from cercarial suspensions were analyzed for lactic acid using p-phenylphenol …

Foraging Dives By Surface-Feeding Ducks, Janet Kear, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Recently, R. I. Smith (1966. Wilson Bull., 78:483-484) questioned, among other things, the occurrence of foraging dives by Pintails (Anas acuta). The authors note observations and published accounts of diving behavior of wild Pintails as well as a number of other surface-feeding species.

Ticks Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Dorald M. Allred
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
During the period from June, 1966, to September, 1967, 27 amphibians of two species, 446 reptiles of eight species, 561 birds of 81 species, and 4050 mammals of 26 species were examined for ectoparasites at the National Reactor Testing Station in southern Idaho. Of seven species of ticks collected, the predominant one was Ixodes kingi, found on mammals of 12 species. Next in abundance was Dermacentor andersoni found on birds of three species and mammals of 16 species. Haemaphysalis leporispalustris was taken from birds of 10 species and six spvecies of mammals. Four other species of Ixodes were taken from …

Dispersal Of Mites Within Apple Trees Of An Abandoned Orchard In Central Utah, Eugene Eldon Nelson
Dispersal Of Mites Within Apple Trees Of An Abandoned Orchard In Central Utah, Eugene Eldon Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
From January to July, 1967, a study of dispersion and distribution characteristics of Typhlodromus mcgregori Chant, Bryobia praetiosa Koch, and Bryobia rubrioculus (Scheuten) was made in an abandoned apple orchard in Highland, American Fork, Utah and in the laboratory at Provo, Utah. Bryobia praetiosa overwintered on the spurs and the other protected sites and with the advent of spring migrated out of the tree and back onto the cover crop. Coinciding with the movement of B. praetiosa out of the tree was the hatching of winter eggs and maturation of B. rubrioculus primarily on the spurs but as far down …

Improvement Of Beef Cattle Through Breeding Methods. Summary Of Results From Regional Project Nc-1, Larry V. Cundiff, Keith E. Gregory
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This publication is a revision of North Central Regional Publication 120, published by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station (Research Bulletin 196) in July, 1961. It summarizes the more important results from this project during its first 19 years of operation. It is by no means complete and includes only what is considered to be the "highlights" of findings at this time. A bibliography of all publications that provided the basis for this summary statement is included. This publication is in the nature of a progress report on many aspects of beef cattle breeding research. Although it is based on considerably …

Local Distribution In A Population Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Robert Edgar Walker
Local Distribution In A Population Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, Robert Edgar Walker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In an attempt to describe, explain, and show the demographic significance of annual variations in the nesting distribution of Uinta ground squirrels, a study was conducted during the summers of 1964 through 1967 in northern Utah. Procedures included both trapping and direct observation.
It was found that females tended to nest in open, previously inhabited, grassy areas. Males resided throughout a variety of habitats.
This typical nesting distribution was established initially in the summer by juveniles shortly after they first appeared aboveground. The extent to which the distribution was maintained the following spring depended largely upon the number of female …
The Asexual And Sexual Stages Of Eimeria Auburnensis In Calves, Bill Chobotar
The Asexual And Sexual Stages Of Eimeria Auburnensis In Calves, Bill Chobotar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In a study of the life cycle of Eimeria auburnensis, 51 of 57 Holstein-Friesian calves were used to study endogenous stages, and the remainder to investigate the prepatent and patent periods. In vitro excysted sporozoites of E. auburnensis were introduced into intestinal fistulas in 8 calves and into the intestine via laparotomy in 2 others. One or more of the 51 calves were killed at daily intervals beginning on the second day and continuing until the 19th day after inoculation. The tissues from calves were prepared by routine histological techniques for nicroscopic examination. First-generation asexual endogenous stages were located …
Comparisons Of Phytoseiid Predator Populations In Sprayed And Unsprayed Apple Orchards In Cache Valley, Utah, Yeboa A. Dodoo
Comparisons Of Phytoseiid Predator Populations In Sprayed And Unsprayed Apple Orchards In Cache Valley, Utah, Yeboa A. Dodoo
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A comparative study of phytoseiid populations was made of two well-cultivated and regularly sprayed apple orchards with two unsprayed orchards in Cache Valley, northern Utah.
Two phytoseiid species, Typhlodromus mcgregori Chant and T. occidentalis Nesbitt were observed on the apple leaves, under the bark, and occasionally in the litter and soil. Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) occurred in the soil and litter and occasionally under bark. T. mcgregori was dominant in the unsprayed orchards, and T. occidentalis in the sprayed.
Of the phytophagous mites, which served as food for the phytoseiids, the two-spotted mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch was dominant. Other phytophagous mites …
A Description Of The Planarian Phagocata Crenophila, New Species, From Utah, Jerry H. Carpenter
A Description Of The Planarian Phagocata Crenophila, New Species, From Utah, Jerry H. Carpenter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A new species of planaria in the genus Phagocata was found in several springs and spring-fed streams in Logan Canyon, Cache County, Utah. This species was named Phagocata crenophila because it greatly prefers to live in springs and it seems to be adapted behaviorally to this type of habitat. Serial sections and whole mounts were made by standard methods in order to study the anatomical features which are necessary for identification of planarians. The distinguishing features of this species are the following: testes ventral and extending from near the brain to near the posterior end, ejaculatory duct opening ventrally from …
The Value Of A Trout Stream Fishery, Archie Allen Dyer
The Value Of A Trout Stream Fishery, Archie Allen Dyer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The data analysis indicated that travel distance, user age, and user income level are important determinants of use of trout streams.
These variables were incorporated into regression analysis to develop a use-prediction model.
This use-prediction model was used to determine predicted use levels of sample streams. The predicted use levels combined with travel costs and expenditures on new fishing equipment were used to derive a statistical estimate of the demand schedules for the sample streams.
These statistical demand curves were subjected to consumer surplus procedures to determine the values of the sample streams.
