The Endlessly Elaborating Poem: A Comparative Study Of Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, And The American Experimental, Long Narrative Poem, Paul Freidinger
The Endlessly Elaborating Poem: A Comparative Study Of Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, And The American Experimental, Long Narrative Poem, Paul Freidinger
Masters Theses
Up to the middle of the nineteenth century, British and American poetry was expected to employ rigid metrical and rhythmical patterns. Any verse that did not conform was considered devoid of aesthetic merit. In addition, some critics, Edgar Allan Poe being one of those, argued that there was no place for a long poem in poetry. Walt Whitman and Wallace Stevens, two proponents of the long narrative poem, both wrote in free verse and, thus, directly confronted these traditional theories.
This study demonstrates that the verse of Whitman and Stevens constitutes a new approach to poetic style and structure. A …

The Biblical View Of The Fall Of Man In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun, Lois Darlene Hanson
The Biblical View Of The Fall Of Man In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun, Lois Darlene Hanson
Masters Theses
"The story of the fall of man!" One can easily tell that The Fall is the main topic in The Marble Faun. Hawthorne, in this romance, is asking whether man's fall in the Garden of Eden was for man's betterment or not. He is also asking if sin is our power of regeneration, for without the sin of Adam and Eve there would have been no need for a savior. This theory is known as the Fortunate Fall of Man.
Hawthorne is suggesting within The Marble Faun that our sin is both original and renewable--it is something that we …

The Influence Of Women In Vardis Fisher’S Western Literature, Sylvia L. Alderton
Masters Theses
Vardis Fisher, a writer who wrote about the early west, uses his life experiences and extensive historical research as a basis for his western novels. With his background in the Antelope region and his historical research, Fisher presents both women in the Antelope hills and women in the hazardous far west surroundings. He instills in the reader a panoramic view of the pioneer women as they experience life in the old west.
The Antelope women are isolated in their environment with little social contact. They are effected physically, psychologically, and economically in this remote area. Most of the women overcome …

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett
Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett
Masters Theses
In "Meditations of an Old Woman," Theodore Roethke poetically encountered death, speaking through the persona of an old woman approaching the end of life. The pattern she follows, wandering through her memory in search of the maiden she once was, is also found in the myth of Demeter and Persephone, which was ritualized in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece. The poem, myth, and ritual taken together reflect a single archetypal pattern for approaching death; comparing them will reveal the essence of each. Through recollection, the old woman finally unites with her lost youthful self in an epiphany similar to …

From Chapter 1:
Although we usually measure time in uniform units, some months and years seem much longer and more packed with significance than other spans of approximately the same duration. Sometimes years and even centuries can roll by with the normal incidence of new fashions, changes of government, economic booms and busts, wars and other detail of the sort that enlivens most of our history books, yet nothing really substantial seems to have taken place. To most appearances and in most respects, the people at the end of the period acted largely like their predecessors several generations earlier. But …
The Letters Of Charlotte Browning Page, Donna Burns
The Letters Of Charlotte Browning Page, Donna Burns
The Courier
Charlotte Page was not eminent in state or national life and politics, but for that very reason her papers are an important primary source. The focus of history traditionally centers on prominent people in society: monarchs, presidents, and statesmen. Recently some historians have shifted their interest to obscure individuals: the peasant, the housewife, and the factory-worker. We can gain an intimate view of history by considering Charlotte Page, an ordinary schoolmistress whose collected letters span five decades, from 1878 to 1941. Charlotte's letters provide excellent written records from which to see her as an individual and to study the society …

Roy Crane—Pioneer Adventure Strip Cartoonist, Ray Thompson
The Courier
The newspaper comic strip was well established in the United States by World War I. It had become a part of every American's cultural background long before the Disney cartoon films of the 1930s. The George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has a large collection of original drawings for comic strips. There are cartoons from the early days of the comic strip to the work of artists still drawing strips which many Americans read every day.
Some of the comic strips have extraordinary lives, continuing past their creator's lifetimes. Buzz Sawyer and his friend Roscoe Sweeney …

Inventory Of The Rio Grande Missions: 1772 San Juan Bautista And San Bernardo, Felix D. Almaraz Jr.
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This monograph is the second in the series of data-oriented reports resulting from the archaeological and ethnohistorical investigations centered on the Spanish mission complex near the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. Dr. Felix D. Almaraz of The University of Texas at San Antonio has now prepared two of the volumes in the series, of which this is the second. His translation of the 1772 mission inventories of San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo should be of considerable value to those interested in the Spanish Colonial history of northern Mexico and Texas.

The Woodlands: Archeological Investigations At The Sam Houston Home, Huntsville, Walker County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr.
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The following report prepared by John W. Clark, Jr. presents the findings made during archeological excavations carried out at the site of Sam Houston's horne, "The Woodlands," in Huntsville, Texas. The primary aim of the excavations was to search for evidence of the original alignment and character of the Houston Horne in order to assist efforts to restore the structure to its original configurations. Of particular concern were the original location of the house, the character of the original chimneys and a determination of the presence or absence of a front porch. This mission was only partially successful due to …
