The Ambiguity Of Truth: Exploring Inductive Reasoning And Pedagogy In Creative Practice Through Critical Reflection, Stephen O'Connell Apr 2026

The Ambiguity Of Truth: Exploring Inductive Reasoning And Pedagogy In Creative Practice Through Critical Reflection, Stephen O'Connell

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

The creative process inherently utilises critical thinking, reflective practice and problem-solving skills, but students can struggle with the mental effort required to engage in critical thinking. This paper examines this phenomenon through a critical reflection as a case study, utilising the Integrated reflective cycle method to engage both in reflective practice and theory. Through the reflection on in-class experiences, errors in the students’ inductive reasoning and a tendency for them to shortcut mental challenges with experiential heuristics were identified, with students appearing to seek cognitive ease over critical metacognition. This paper then proposes utilising an inductive reasoning-led pedagogy, with a …

Dying For A Clause: Arguing The Need For Creative Sources In Academic Papers, Philip Van Hout Apr 2026

Dying For A Clause: Arguing The Need For Creative Sources In Academic Papers, Philip Van Hout

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

The use of peer-reviewed texts is standard practice in academic papers. However, should a magazine written by and for practitioners be included in such articles? I argue that several factors can influence the creation of an academic paper, and that sources from various origins should be considered. Four points are explored that can affect the choice of references and from these, I posit that while robust analysis and depth are essential, there is no necessity to exclude non-peer-reviewed papers. This paper also raises the concern that the criteria for inclusion in the peer-review system may be a matter of control. …

Understanding Adult Patients’ Experiences Of Trauma-Informed Care In Outpatient Healthcare, Jayme Aguero Apr 2026

Understanding Adult Patients’ Experiences Of Trauma-Informed Care In Outpatient Healthcare, Jayme Aguero

Dissertations (1934 -)

Trauma is recognized as a universal human experience. Well-established evidence demonstrates the negative impact of trauma on health outcomes. In 2014, following a recommendation from SAMHSA, trauma-informed care (TIC) was implemented across human service sectors, including healthcare. While TIC has been in use for the past decade, adults’ experiences of receiving TIC in outpatient healthcare remain largely unknown. The purposes of this study were (a) to explore and describe how adults’ healthcare experiences aligned with the principles of TIC being implemented in outpatient healthcare settings and (b) to understand the perceived usefulness and meaning of TIC for adult patients. A …

German Is For You! The Making Of A High School Multikulti German Course, Jennene Aten

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This teacher self-study examined the process of creating and teaching a multicultural German curriculum. This study necessarily involved observing students as they went through the semester of course work, but students are not the center of the research. I am. This research focuses on what I learned about teaching, specifically my teaching in my subject area and how I could improve my skills and methods.

Germany is an ethnically diverse nation but not usually thought of as such. The presentation of Germany in German language textbooks is generally portrayed as rather monochromatic. Students who study German, specifically in Fairfield, California, …

Making The Case For Spandex: The Nature Of Re-Novicing And The Merging Of Expertise For Former Elementary And High School Teachers Who Move To Teaching At The Middle Level, Elizabeth K. Boyle

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

As an academic coach in a large, Midwestern middle school, I noticed an influx of teachers with years of prior experience at the elementary or high school levels being hired to work with students in grades six through eight. Because they were already veteran teachers, they were not assigned mentorship, yet there were aspects of working in a middle-school setting that effectively “re-noviced” them (Hanuscin et al., 2020).

Knowing that cookie-cutter approaches to professional development and learning often do not meet the needs of adult learners, I sought information that would guide what professional growth opportunities could be provided to …

Leading With The Heart: Fostering Asset-Based Teacher Beliefs And Practices For Multilingual Learners Through Research–Practice Partnership In A Diversifying Suburban Elementary School, Valerie Anne Kyllmann

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This mixed methods study is part of a larger research-practice partnership (RPP) between practitioners and researchers at a Midwestern suburban elementary school experiencing an increase in cultural and linguistic diversity. Like many U.S. schools, its teaching force is mostly White, middle-class, and female, creating not only a pedagogical gap, but also a belief gap about the linguistic and academic assets multilingual students possess. Grounded in linguistically responsive teaching, adult learning, and improvement science, this study explores how RPPs can leverage varying expertise in cycles of inquiry to co-create initiatives that foster asset-based teacher perspectives through building-wide events and professional development. …

Critical Edition Of El Libertador: A Symphonic Poem By Costa Rican Composer Julio Mata (1899–1969), Manuel Monge Mata

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This project offers a critical edition of El Libertador, a symphonic poem composed by Costa Rican artist Julio Mata Oreamuno (1899–1969). The piece holds special importance in Costa Rican orchestral music and represents the symphonic poem genre in Latin American compositions. Although Mata is acknowledged as a key figure in the growth of Costa Rican musical institutions and composition during the twentieth century, much of his orchestral work remains rarely performed and not easily accessible to today’s performers.

The edition is based on manuscript sources kept in the Archivo Histórico Musical of the University of Costa Rica, consisting of …

Quality Improvement Project: Improving Provider Workflow And Documentation For Routine Mental Health Screening In An Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic, Sharon Uchechi Joshua

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Depression and anxiety are leading causes of disability and are frequently underdiagnosed in outpatient psychiatric settings due to inconsistent screening and documentation practices. Evidence supports the use of standardized tools, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), to improve early detection and clinical outcomes. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated whether implementing standardized electronic health record (EHR) templates and provider education would improve documentation of PHQ-9 and GAD-7 screenings. The aim was to increase the consistency of screening and documentation among psychiatric providers. The project was guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework and Lewin’s Change …

Subsequently, systematic screening and application …

Fast Hyperspectral And Super-Resolved Mapping Of Lipid Membrane Polarity With Single-Molecule Sensitivity, Elric Dion Pott, Meek Yang, James Ethan Batey, Jole Embree, Bin Dong Apr 2026

Fast Hyperspectral And Super-Resolved Mapping Of Lipid Membrane Polarity With Single-Molecule Sensitivity, Elric Dion Pott, Meek Yang, James Ethan Batey, Jole Embree, Bin Dong

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cell membranes display nanoscale heterogeneity in lipid composition and organization that regulates vital biological processes yet remain challenging to resolve with conventional imaging. We introduce spectral phasor single-molecule localization microscopy (SP-SMLM), a hyperspectral and super-resolution method that combines wavefront-like optical filtering with single-molecule imaging for simultaneous spatial and spectral analysis. A lab-built three-channel imager with sine/cosine filters encodes emission spectra of single molecules into the phasor space, enabling high-throughput, high-SNR mapping of membrane polarity at sub-50 nm spatial and 15 s temporal resolutions. Through simulation, we validate that the phasor angle correlates with the spectral mean for single dye molecules. …

Service Providers’ Perceptions Of Mckinney-Vento Implementation: Supporting Academic Performance And Attendance In K-12 Students’ Experiencing Homelessness, Darci Mcrae

Honors Projects

In Wood, Lucas, and Ottawa County, Ohio, approximately 2,508 students or 2.6% of total enrollment experience homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Act (MVA, 1987) aims to reduce educational barriers for these students by ensuring access to transportation, school enrollment, school supplies, and additional educational support. Despite these provisions, the effectiveness of MVA implementation varies among school districts due to differences in staff training, funding, procedures, and the diverse needs of students experiencing homelessness. This study examines service providers’ perceptions of how the MVA is implemented in public school districts and how it affects attendance and academic performance among K–12 students’ experiencing homelessness. …

Barriers Asian Adoptees Face In Screening For Inheritable Conditions Due To A Lack Of Family Medical History, Anna Shea Apr 2026

Barriers Asian Adoptees Face In Screening For Inheritable Conditions Due To A Lack Of Family Medical History, Anna Shea

Honors Projects

Adoption has been increasingly common in the United States, with more than 7.8 million people in the United States adopted (Wexler et al., 2025) and over 280,000 children in the United States adopted internationally (Orr et al., 2024). Despite this, those who are adopted, especially internationally, often face medical disadvantages compared to those biologically related to their family. The differences in treatment between adoptees and those who are biologically related are largely due to the knowledge, or lack of knowledge, of the individual’s family medical history and genetic information. Genetic or inherited disease screening is often only completed or covered …

Moral Emotions Within The Habituation Of Virtue, Hannah Starr Grubbs-Oechsle Apr 2026

Moral Emotions Within The Habituation Of Virtue, Hannah Starr Grubbs-Oechsle

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this dissertation, I examine how moral emotions feature within the habituation of virtues. I suggest that their primary role within the moral life is epistemic: emotions grant agents perceptual access to evaluative properties in the world. I argue that their perceptual function within habit formation is normatively indispensable. I proceed through five methodological movements. I begin by presenting the three historical accounts of emotion I take as most influential on contemporary Western beliefs about emotion and as most dominant within the philosophy of emotion. To that end, I trace Stoic and Kantian accounts of emotion as representative of the …
