Dorothy Johnson, Judy Alter
Dorothy Johnson, Judy Alter
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Although her work is primarily rooted in her home state of Montana, Dorothy Johnson was not born a Westerner. Her birthplace was a farm in McGregor, Iowa, a town in the heart of the Midwest. Born on December 19, 1905, she was christened Dorothy Marie Johnson and called Marie by friends and family until she went to college.
Joaquin Miller, Benjamin S. Lawson
Joaquin Miller, Benjamin S. Lawson
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
When Joaquin Miller died in 1913, he had been conspicuous on the American literary scene for over forty years. Given to seeing his literary career as an analogue to the actual exploration and settling of the West, he conceived, enacted, and recorded an eventful life in which he himself figures most prominently. Miller had created a public image, which was probably a self-image as well, of himself as writer and as Westerner. His prose and poetry are sometimes marked by the romantic excesses of Byron or Swinburne; and his life and work include picturesque posings as the Wild Westerner. But …

Janet Lewis, Charles L. Crow
Janet Lewis, Charles L. Crow
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Janet Lewis’s writing career has spanned nearly sixty years, long enough for her to reflect, were she interested in the subject, on the disparity between excellence and fame. She has published poetry, short stories, essays, children’s books, opera libretti, and novels. She has been praised by distinguished writers and critics, including Theodore Roethke and Donald Davie. Two of her novels, The Wife of Martin Guerre and The Trial of Soren Quist, have been hailed as masterpieces. She remains little known, however, even though she has a circle of enthusiastic admirers.

"Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance
"Aunt Sue's Stories": The Use Of Folklore In The Teaching Of Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
This poem by Langston Hughes, one of America's most prolific poets, suggests the appeal of folklore to the young. Aunt Sue's stories inspire the response that every teacher of literature aspires to elicit from his students. I would like to suggest that the most natural thing in the world for the teacher is to capitalize on this appeal of folklore to help develop an interest in and an appreciation for recorded literature. Folklore can do much to help the student bridge the gap between his own world and what seems to many to be the alien world of Shakespeare. Our …
Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress
Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress
Masters Theses
The traditional approaches to Herman Melville's Billy Budd focus upon the question of whether or not the story was Melville's final statement of acceptance or irony. Both arguments are sociological in nature in that the different sides argue that Melville either finally accepts or continues to reject by irony, the forms of society. The acceptance critics contend that Melville ends by seeing value in the forms because of their use for maintaining order in society; the irony critics claim that Melville was taking a final satirical poke at society's limiting forms and authority.
My thesis differs from these traditional arguments …
The Innocent Narrator In Mark Twain's Roughing It, John R. Fisher
The Innocent Narrator In Mark Twain's Roughing It, John R. Fisher
Masters Theses
Mark Twain in his travel narrative Roughing It presents a naive, innocent narrator from the East who ventures forth into the largely uncivilized Western frontier during the exciting silver mining boom of the 1860's. In his sojourn the innocent narrator encounters many people, places, customs, values, and experiences that are unfamiliar to him, and because of his status as a tenderfoot unacquainted with the frontier, he is often made a dupe by the mischievous old-timers in the West.
The innocent narrator must go through numerous initiations before he is accepted as a member of the vernacular community. In these various …

The Pragmatic Evolution Of America & The Role Of The Intellectual, Michael Draper
The Pragmatic Evolution Of America & The Role Of The Intellectual, Michael Draper
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The intent of this thesis is to examine a portion of the thought and historical events which contributed to the development of the United States as a pragmatic nation, and the resulting influence upon its intellectual attitudes. The pragmatic evolution of America is a logical consequence, given the backgrounds and circumstances of those people who first settled this land. The founders of this country were, for the most part, members of the poor, working class who had grown up under governments adhering to strict caste societies and religious domination by their rulers. They held a common belief in a work …

Reluctant Warriors And The Federalist Resurgence In New York, 1808-1815, Harvey Strum
Reluctant Warriors And The Federalist Resurgence In New York, 1808-1815, Harvey Strum
The Courier
Harvey Strum details the tumultuous political environment in New York in the events leading up to and during the War of 1812. The main struggle was between the dominant Republican party, and a resurgent Federalist party. The Republicans wanted war with Britain and an embargo on trade with Canada, while the Federalists wanted to preserve the trade that was so crucial to the economic well-being of New York. This led to clashes between central New York residents breaking the embargo and the local militia. The Federalist resurgance was a temporary interruption of the dominance of the Republican Party in New …
The Decline Of The Written Word, William Safire
The Decline Of The Written Word, William Safire
The Courier
Part of a commencement speech delivered by William Safire to the graduating class of 1978 at Syracuse University, William Safire bemoans the state of rhetoric and the written word, chastising not only the White House but society at large. He argues attention spans have steadily waned over the years, with popular culture filling the void where intellectual discourse used to exist.

An Intensive Archaeological Survey Of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Llano And Gillespie Counties, Texas, Cristi Assad, Daniel R. Potter
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During February through April 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an intensive archaeological survey at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Llano and Gillespie Counties, Texas. A summary of the 120 newly recorded sites is presented, along with more detailed information on shovel testing, auger testing and two excavated sites. Data from faunal and constant volume analyses at the excavated sites are described and tabulated. Appendices include documentation of a local collection, an artifact inventory from an earlier survey, and an analysis of phytoliths from one of the excavated sites.
