Poultry Progress: Our Egg Marketing Job, F. E. Mussehl, H. C. Filley
Poultry Progress: Our Egg Marketing Job, F. E. Mussehl, H. C. Filley
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Eggs are one of the products which Nebraska farm families exchange for the necessities and comforts of life. Although values are measured in dollars and cents, the interest of the producers centers in the amount of useful goods and services that the eggs will buy rather than in the price per dozen or per case. Farmers are interested in a fair exchange value because they wish better homes, better schools, better churches, and better communities in general. In the typical Nebraska community, not only farmers but physicians, merchants, mechanics and school teachers are dependent for their income, either directly or …

Poultry Progress: What Are Good Chickens?, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The desire for improvement is one of the highest of human virtues. Folks everywhere want good chickens. The poultry business is a competitive enterprise, and it is imperative that we have the best stock possible for the particular job to be done. But what are good chickens? Is there confusion about the term? Perhaps we can clarify the picture by asking one or two questions.

External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare
External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
External parasites cause severe losses to Nebraska poultry producers each year, and in many cases may be the deciding factor between success and failure. Under present circumstances, when maximum production is essential, prompt and effective measures must be taken to hold these saboteurs in check.
The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis
The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The use of substitutes for milk in the raising of calves is always of interest to the progressive dairyman, since there are a number of circumstances in which it is advantageous to reduce the milk feeding period. Producers of market milk often desire to raise their calves on as little milk as possible in order to have more milk available for market. When the demand for milk is good, dairymen who usually market cream only may prefer to sell milk and raise their calves on starters or other milk substitutes. Dairy farmers may wish to use the skim milk generally …

Bindweed Eradication In Nebraska, N. S. Hanson, F. D. Keim, D. L. Gross
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Bindweed, which is easily recognized by its creeping, entwining habit of growth, is Nebraska's most destructive weed because of its effect on crop plants. Its total annual cost to the agricultural industry of the state is several million dollars, which ultimately affects all those citizens who depend directly or indirectly upon income from agriculture.
Farm Management Aspects Of Agricultural War Production In South Dakota, C.R. Hoglund
Farm Management Aspects Of Agricultural War Production In South Dakota, C.R. Hoglund
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
ncreasing demands for meat, milk, fats, cereals, and oils make it essential that South Dakota farmers adjust their individual programs to achieve maximum production. This increased production may be brought about by a fuller utilization of crop land and land otherwise left idle, by shifting from low to high nutrient production crops, by adjusting livestock feeding practices for a more efficient use of feed and by the adoption of other improved farm management practices.
Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis
Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A breeding experiment with 295 dairy cows and heifers of the Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, and Holstein breeds was conducted in the University of Nebraska dairy herd. The females were given artificial services at various stages of estrus to determine the effect of time of service upon conception. The results obtained indicate the potential benefits in higher percentage of conception in females bred during the middle of estrus, toward the end of estrus, and those bred in full heat and rebred in 24 hours. The latter is usually not very practical, especially in artificial breeding rings, but there are occasions when …
Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl
Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
This preliminary experiment does not answer all of the questions that are presented about manganese and iodine requirements. It can only be taken to indicate that for a typical situation with a typical ration of the type that many poultry producers use, there was no satisfactory evidence that egg production, hatchability and the viability of the hens was limited by manganese and iodine in the ration.

Farm Tenure In South Dakota [:] Some Of Its Economic And Sociological Aspects, Alvin E. Coons, Walter L. Slocum
Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)
Almost without exception county land-use planning committees have listed tenancy among the more important land-use problems in South Dakota. This concern is due to the increase in tenancy, to the growing obstacles in the way of those who wish to become land owners and to some extent to the existence of unsatisfactory relationships between landlord and tenant. Tenancy, however, is only one aspect of the much broader land tenure picture which includes all phases of the control and use of the land. To become a farm owner has long been considered a desirable and legitimate ambition of farm operators, or …
Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe
Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The manufacturing of dairy products on a commercial scale began about the middle of the nineteenth century and was greatly stimulated by the development of the centrifugal cream separator in the late eighties. The invention of the Babcock test in the early nineties overcame some of the difficulties that had developed in paying for milk upon its butterfat content, since it was early recognized that milk varied widely in that respect.
Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs
Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Cooling, Storage, And Transporation Of Milk And Cream, P. A. Downs, F. D. Yung
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The care given milk and milk products should be such that they will be relished by young and old alike. Greater use of milk can be encouraged by serving fresh milk cold. Cooling of milk also insures a fine product several hours after production. This is important not only for milk that is to be used, but for milk or cream that is to be sold.

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Ix. The Nitrogen Of Urea, C. W. Ackerson, W. E. Ham, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. The effect of replacing one-third of the concentrate of a ration for growing chicks with a mixture of starch and urea that contained an amount of nitrogen equal to that contained in the concentrate withdrawn from the ration was studied with two lots of chicks. 2. All chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of nitrogen during the experiment. 3. Conclusions were based on increases in body weight and content of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus at slaughter.
